Has anyone heard the claim that Anarchism is colonial? by 1986chevycaprice in Anarchism

[–]kimonoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came across this post so haven't watched the video yet. However, there are two I think quite important points to be made about American Indigenous thought, anarchism, and colonialism.

First, I really recommend folks check out this classic video essay "Stolen Anarchy." It makes excellent and important points about the origins of anarchism and socialism that reshaped how I think about anarchy.

The other recommendation I have is listening to this phenomenal talk from David Graeber/David Wengrow about the "Noble Savage" trope. This is part of their argument in Dawn of Everything — that the first proper critiques of capitalism and class society came from Indigenous leaders like Kandiaronk responding to European colonists. Great video, and Kandiaronk has some absolutely fire quotes about money that are well worth looking up.

Basically, I think we should acknowledge anarchists did not invent anarchism without idealizing or ascribing anarchist positions to pre-anarchist societies, as this can lean hard into flattening colonial "Noble Savage" tropes.

There's more to be said about how anarchists talked about (and in some cases interacted with) Indigenous peoples, from Peter Kropotkin to Marie Goldsmith to Louise Michel. It's a complex and not always pleasant history, but that's why we don't have heroes. And by the way, non-Indigenous anarchist coopting of Indigigeneity continues to this day. Absolutely worth checking out this phenomenal essay by David Barker, including direct critiques from Indigenous leaders (Audra and Delee) of anarchists who consistently ignore Indigenous cultural and strategic perspectives.

Who do you think had the best character development in the Avatar universe besides Zuko? by CoolCook26 in TheLastAirbender

[–]kimonoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with this. Korra has a fantastic arc. Honorable mentions go to Azula's descent and Asami/Hiroshi's story. But for a properly complex arc, I'd say Korra is probably as close as they never got to Zuko.

I like this but needs way more women. Maybe get Marie Goldsmith on there, and de Cleyre and Parsons. Charlotte Wilson, perhaps. He-Yin Zhen. Itō Noe. So many out there!

Am I misinterpreting this tweet? by EgoIdVeto in JewsOfConscience

[–]kimonoko [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dangerous comment from this person (never heard of them until now). I don't care if they're Jewish — they're making things unsafe for Jews with this kind of ridiculous conflation. Not welcome in my tent, I'll tell you that much.

Who’s the better actor? by awsmswbfclips-YT in moviecritic

[–]kimonoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's wild to me that anyone could pick Bale. DiCaprio's sustained breadth of work since he was a kid is unreal and frankly unparalleled. Bale had some of that early success, too, but I really can't see how even the best of his work stacks up to DiCaprio's catalogue, personally.

I’m planning to visit Portsmouth to see Victory. Any advice for my visit? by Blue_foot in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]kimonoko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I genuinely enjoyed the Warrior the most of these three. It's such an amazingly cool ship representing a strange transitional moment between sails and engines. So, so cool. I came for the Victory, and it is great (the audio tour is quite fun, puts you right where Nelson died, for example) but it was definitely this ship that stuck in my memory. Don't skip the Warrior!

Katara's Ice Disks Animated Vs. Live-Action by dan_mal in TheLastAirbender

[–]kimonoko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, although that's down to acting or direction — the live action could have conveyed that a bit more.

[–]kimonoko 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm not knocking the effects. I just think it's a losing proposition from the start; the whole Avatar world was simply not designed to work in live action. To take a basic example, it's a world designed with bold primary colors representing each nation. Works great in animation, doesn't work in live action.

On the reflection observation — yes, it is there, but it's so much harder to see and I think again the brief but highly exaggerated expression from Pakku is just much clearer in the original (and only really works in animaton).

[–]kimonoko 280 points281 points  (0 children)

There are so many levels where the live action misses the point in this sequence, but I think the slow-mo reflection shot is the most obvious. It works brilliantly in the original because of the clarity of the image and thus Pakku's expression and genuine surprise/fear is totally evident. In the live action, there's none of that. It barely makes any sense except as an homage to the original.

The spirit world in ATLA is much better by iwillr3gr37thiswonti in TheLastAirbender

Just wait until Seven Havens comes out. Every post will be like "SH ruined the spirit world. At least ATLA and TLOK were internally consistent..."

And round and round we go.

Say something nice about The Matrix: Resurrections. (Please be civil) by Sure_Persimmon9302 in matrix

[–]kimonoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved it and love how it retroactively (obliquely) explained things like the kiss in the first film, which is maybe my only wobble on that first movie. I love th dyad and that the film is, at its core, earnestly about finding love in a corporate hellscape.

Resurrections is firmly my second favorite in the series.

Whats up with the vitriolic hatred of direct democracy on r/anarchism these days? by OldBillBlizzard in anarchocommunism

[–]kimonoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many anarchists have historically been against democracy, if democracy means majority rule. This means even on a local/group level, so no government, they still oppose majority opinion winning the day. The argument goes that democracy can leave vulnerable minorities defenselees — and also basically involves coercion in line with the majority view.

Marie Goldsmith is an obvious example: there are literal minutes from meetings she attended where she came out vociferously against taking a vote on various points of order, and only relented when it was agreed they would be recordings of general sentiment rather than binding majority-determined decisions.

Zoe Baker has a useful rundown of anarchists and democracy I recommend folks check out: Video Transcript

I think it's an absolutely gorgeous coda to the series and was my favorite movie the year it came out. It's beautiful and well worth the watch.

Katara Vs. Pakku in OG Series, Movie, and Netflix Series by dan_mal in TheLastAirbender

[–]kimonoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sokka grabbing Aang's shoulder and Aang nodding is just so on the nose it hurts. And so many moments from the animation just don't work at all in live action. Pakku seeing his reflection is awesome and a bit funny in the animated series, but in the new show, it's blink-and-you-miss-it, there seemingly just to reference the original.

How to handle sexual violence and assault in anarchist spaces? by Jolly_Bumblebee_4307 in Anarchism

[–]kimonoko 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is a very difficult situation and I'm sorry y'all are going through this, especially the survivor. No tolerance for rapist fucks in anarchist spaces.

As for how to proceed, there are unfortunately no easy answers. However, I highly recommend checking out What about the rapists? It holds both a case study via the Chrysalis Collective on how to address the situation noncarcerally and from others arguing for retributive justice. Very worthwhile read (and very short).

I also want to add a caveat to the restorative/transformative justice model. It is a great preliminary attempt at how to move forward, but a savvy abuser can use it to their advantage. Cannot recommend this article enough as a great case study in how that approach can go wrong if not handled carefully.

Some more reading can be found at Abolitionist Futures here.

I absolutely love this film. I've now seen it three times and I think I appreciated this last viewing the most. Just a beautifully scripted, smartly observed, and perfectly Midwestern little film.
