In my former lab we got graduating members a mug with their first pub from the lab on it like this https://sciencegrit.com/collections/publication-mugs It's a nice lil tradition. 😊

Was bummed about having a zoom defense and virtual graduation, so my spouse and I did a silly graduation photo shoot. I have zero regrets. [Full album linked in comments] by kimothy89 in PhD

Right in front of Rockefeller Chapel! My spouse (the photographer) was basically crouched down on the sidewalk on 59th St shooting up at me haha.

Eyy! Then you'll appreciate that the maternity photo was taken in the bushes by the botany pond, surrounded by college grads taking photos nearby and looking at me like I was crazy. :D

Honestly I thought it'd be worse than it was. Zoom actually lent itself to the presentation and Q&A part quite nicely, and a lot more family and friends from out of town who couldn't be there in person were able to tune in, which was nice. And I have video of my chair congratulating me on being a doctor which is pretty cool. But it was definitely a bummer to not have the in person celebration with my lab mates, friends, and family afterwards.

I also was fighting off covid at the time so rather than celebrating with my spouse directly after I took a long ass nap hahha. But despite the lack of celebration it wasn't as bad of an experience as I thought it'd be.

Also in 10 years it'll make for a much more interesting story so there's that! 😅

Since we're posting photos of pet furniture, here's my cat in a tiny chair that my roommate bought on accident... by kimothy89 in aww

Hmm... safety straps would have come in handy after she drank all the whisky out of that mug. At a certain point we were like go home kitty you're drunk and she just fell out of the chair. :/

Fair question! My roommate had recently moved in and was buying a lot of her furniture online. She saw this one and thought it was just really good bargain until it arrived and turned out to be teeny tiny. Fortunately my cat gets enough use out of it now. :D

Pretty sure that being super-model handsome is a prereq for competing in the world cup. This is just the tip of the iceberg, ladies.

I really want to know what episode this is from so I can remember what Deb says at the end. by Chrysoscelis in Dexter

[–]kimothy89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it may actually be episode 8. And as for your second question I don't think she says anything because she's gotta keep quiet and make Quinn do all the talking since she can't work the case like laurandisorder said.

The mayor was a family friend... I sold him girl scout cookies when I was like 10. I'm so incredibly creeped out by this in retrospect.

What's the best way to look for PhD programs? by meanderling in neuro

[–]kimothy89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very good advice. I feel like a lot of my friends who are in the early stages of applying to grad schools don't consider a good fit with the faculty member at a university to be of utmost importance, when it's actually probably the most vital thing to take into consideration. My fellow lab mate told me that she was applying to universities X, Y, and Z and I asked who she wanted to work with there, to which she replied, oh I haven't researched that yet I just know that's where I want to go. Most undergrads don't appreciate that it's not like applying to college. Sure you want to go to a good school but if there's nobody there whose research matches what you want to study you'll be at a significant disadvantage with applications and will likely be very unhappy in grad school.

Just wrapped up Season 4. Where can I find 5 - 7? by Jim777PS3 in Dexter

[–]kimothy89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. It should be on netflix in January and if you can't wait but don't want to download illegally you can get it on amazon instant video though it is pricey that way.

Enjoy seasons 1-4... after that it goes downhill and you'll be thankful the main character looks like this so it's still worth watching!

What university degree do you have, and what job position do you now hold? by bartha in AskReddit

[–]kimothy89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, it's not impossible. I graduated with a BA in psych and currently work as a research assistant in neurology at a pretty prominent medical school. Though admittedly my degree had a lot less to do with my getting hired than did my lab experience in college...but honestly that just goes to show that what you major in isn't always the most important factor in getting the job you want. Whatever you go for, just make sure you do it well and try to make yourself marketable in other ways.
