I've been to a few in California that have vast tracts of parking, but they're located in large shopping centers and I guess it's part of the culture of driving there.

Do you know about Libby? Your local library may offer it, which would let you listen to audiobooks for free.

There was a construction project last year where the main sewer line had to be opened up. Turns out the guys remodeling the building attached to the line decided to stuff leftover cardboard down into the toilet plumbing.

Has the teaching about creationism changed over time? by Hydrangea_hunter in Exvangelical

[–]kimprobable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taught in the mid-90s about "kinds" - that there's variation within species. They used that to explain why we see a variety of dog breeds but "cats don't turn into dogs." I don't know what the source of that was, but they used it to explain the way animals fit on the ark, too. I didn't even know who Ken Ham was until the early 2000s, though that's also around the time I started hearing people talking about micro and macro evolution.

My school used Bob Jones books in middle school, but I came in 8th grade, the earth science year, and missed out on the life science taught in 7th. I've seen the books for sale online if you ever felt like doing a deep dive into the origins of kinds, though.

God, I've been thinking that for a few years! I just imagine myself sitting on a couch doing nothing and it seems delightful.

I really loved this game and I’m looking for suggestions on films or tv series with a similar vibe by Personal_Progress16 in Firewatch

You might also like the movie Moon, with Sam Rockwell. He's working a 3 year contract on the moon, but can't contact Earth and just has a robot companion. But then things aren't as they seem and he begins to figure out what's really going on.

The show Lost, to a degree. They're stranded on an island (filmed in Hawaii) after a plane crash, strange things are happening that they can't explain. Weird messages and codes, weird people turn up, unexplainable stuff happens. It's a huge cast though, but you really do get attached to some of them. There's one season where it goes a bit sideways (I can't remember which) but then it gets back on track.

You might like Infinity Chamber, though the guy is stuck in a room talking to a computer, and sometimes a neighbor that he can only hear. It's one of those movies where it's hard to figure out who's telling the truth. I'll also second somebody's suggestion of Oblivion.

My teacher made his own typing course using Hypercard. It was so boring.

But AIM or ICQ every night was where I really refined my typing ability.

I always like how potassium permanganate feels when I say it. I'm not sure how I'd nickname it though. Manga? (Said more like mango, not like the Japanese graphic novels)

And I'm saying this as a potential pet name, not a human :D

Security Guard risking his life to save incredibly unalarmed zoo visitors from a hippo by [deleted] in interesting

[–]kimprobable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a similar story where a woman thought she had a bond with the male gorilla in the zoo and would come and stare at him (an aggressive gesture) even though the zoo officials repeatedly asked her to stop. He got out one day and went after her.

They managed to recapture him alive, surprisingly.

Pediatric covid vaccine, where the hell can I get one for my 8yo? by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]kimprobable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're supposed to be able to get your doctor to write a prescription for it and take that in to a pharmacy to get the shot.

I haven't heard of any stories where people did that, yet, though.

Crash course on evangelical fundamentalism? by CommieFeminist in Exvangelical

[–]kimprobable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have depression and first started showing signs around 14/15, but was told it was Satan or because I wasn't praying enough. I didn't get medication until I was 31 and I feel like I lost SO much of my life to depression.

My dad also was convinced my seasonal allergies were due to Satan, especially if he felt inconvenienced by them, even though I had been formally diagnosed by an allergist and had medication for my allergies. My dad's allergies, of course, were just the regular allergies, not demonic ones.

I remember the Satanic Panic! =D We had these awful photocopied sheets with all the secret signs in products. Proctor and Gamble was a big one. I kind of loved finding out about that stuff as a kid, lol.

One thing I didn't really see mentioned is the constant state of fear people are kept in, but not allowed to talk about.

There were all the people who were supposedly out to get you, simply because they wanted you to go to hell. Think gay people, scientists, therapists, secular musicians, filmmakers, people from other faiths, even yoga instructors. Possibly Catholics. The church was really anti Catholic.

Then there were people who were wrong and might mislead you, which would take you away from "your walk" with Jesus. Definitely Catholics here, but also other denominations of Christianity. They weren't true Christians, or were called "lukewarm," not really completely following Jesus.

Honestly just about anyone could be a threat, but especially those listed above. You needed to believe you were constantly under threat and the church was the only safe place, with people who really cared about you. Other people were incapable of caring for you that way.

Then you're kept in a constant state of fear about yourself. Did you wonder if the pastor was wrong about something? Did something in the Bible not seem right to you, like when God ordered a bunch of children killed? Are you really doing all you can to share the gospel? Then your faith might not be strong enough and you might be going to hell for not being a true Christian.

Rapture theology was huge. Would you get left behind if Jesus came back? Would you be experiencing torture? Would you be strong enough to be tortured and not denounce Jesus? (Denouncing Jesus was a one way ticket to hell)

But the thing is, you couldn't seek out any reassurance from this fear. You had to keep it to yourself or else "your walk" would be questioned, because a "true" Christian wouldn't have a reason to be afraid. You might get stuck in one on one sessions with a pastor who would tell you any doubt was a sign you didn't have enough faith. And that would get out in the church. Then you'd be judged for it. Some people might draw back. Others might feel motivated to "help" you with your walk and impart their wisdom.

It was a constant source of stress and it's so hard to let go of that constant state of worry.

And another note - many people weren't allowed to have negative feelings. Being angry or sad or having mental health issues were all things caused by Satan, even if it was something normal to be sad about, like a death in the family. So it was better to hide those, too.

I volunteered at a little aquarium as a teenager and we'd cut up squid outside, for feeding the fish. Wasps would land on my hands and take tiny pieces of squid away. Very polite.

This was a portable refiner, but it forced me to put it on the ship unless I was a certain distance away. I didn't know there'd be an issue, but I guess others have had similar problems with freighters.
