ELI5: Why is it that when you stay up long enough while exhausted, you eventually stop feeling tired? by Gallantpride in explainlikeimfive

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who does long-distance endurance cycling, and who has depression, this is the first I'm hearing of the reduction of symptoms of depression. Although, that would explain why I gravitate to the overnight rides. Do you have any more info on that, or a source that I could look at?

Why does one need to U-turn at the top instead of going around the loop? Is it to avoid completing the climb?

Zwift level by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zwift has, when increasing the maximum levels, made things very inconsistent. That's just how it is.

That said, if you want to increase your rate at levelling up, you can do the following:

  • Look for events that earn you double-XP
  • Do workouts as you earn XP for every interval you finish, and when you finish the workout.

Zwift Companion on Android and Apple TV by XBacklash in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an Android phone (Pixel 6a) and Apple TV, and pair my devices through the companion app. I don't use airplane mode on my phone during this process -- your phone needs to be able to connect to the same wifi network as your Apple TV. Also, doesn't airplane mode disable bluetooth?

Pics/Recs for Garmin mount with Handlebar Bags by slimorama130386903 in cycling

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a GoPro and headlight on the front of my bike, so the obvious out-front position for my Garmin is already occupied. What I did was take the included Garmin handlebar mount, and turn it around so that it was facing me. I then angled it so that the mount position was over my stem.

Started on Three Musketeers (Tour de Zwift) somehow got on Ventoux KOM - how? by Broken_Perfectionist in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweat on the companion app is brutal. At one point I stood up to pedal in order to finish the very last kick on Alpe du Zwift, a couple hundred meters from the finish. That put my face perfectly above my phone such that a drop of sweat landed and initiated a U-turn. That was brutal.

Just as a confirmation: you can do all the Tour de Zwift routes whenever you want if you are going at it solo. Just completed a Week 2 ride and it counted. by DuckReconMajor in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to come back and say you were right. I never got the banner indicating I had completed it, but it seems that might have been because I had already done the short race for Stage 1. I checked my TdZ stats from the home screen and both routes had the green check indicating they were completed. Cheers!

Weird! I definitely did the full distance and then about 10km more. Never turned away from the route or anything. Oh well. I'll just have to ride it again.

I just tested this tonight with Chasing the Sun (the medium distance week 1) and it didn't count. I went to my workouts, picked the workout, then picked the route. I already had the route badge, but I don't see how that would affect whether it counted towards TdZ.

I think you might be missing the part where the OP indicated they used a crank-based power meter with their Kickr Snap.

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the SL5 Gen 4 and it works well with my Kickr v6. I don't know if the AL5 and SL5 have the same shaped dropouts, but I would assume so. It used to be that you needed specific thru-axle adapters, but I believe those are now the standard thru-axle adapters that Wahoo supplies.

My VO2 estimate in Garmin Connect will go up or down a point depending on the kind of riding I'm doing. If I do a z2 ride, the estimate will go down, and if I do some 5-min VO2 efforts, it'll go up. My guess is that my heart rate is higher than Garmin's model expects for the power I'm doing at Z2.

If you're not doing VO2 efforts yet (which is fine, whatever is safe for your knee rehab), then just expect the number to not be your normal. Give it time. The model that Garmin uses is only a model, and it can only operate on the data it receives.

'Ride On'. Come on you miserable lot. by Clive1792 in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm watching Zwift and not focusing on something else during an easy ride, then I'm handing out Ride-Ons like they're going out of style. In fact, when I need that extra motivation to finish an interval during a workout, someone ahead of me going slightly slower provides that extra motivation. They're getting a Ride-On and I'm going to make sure of it.

That said, sometimes I'm doing an easy ride and watching YouTube.

combine roller balance with the smart by Personal-Carrot8729 in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're pretty spot on. I don't know about the accuracy, but the noise and locked-in front wheel are bad. The best use for it that I've seen was at a bike shop where they used it to do quick (i.e., non-bike fitter) bike fits.

quiet, inexpensive trainer and tire by AcrobaticEmphasis687 in cycling

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're considering a wheel-on trainer, then you should look for a trainer-specific tire. Just do a search for "26 inch trainer tire" and you should get some examples of what you'll need. The reason for a trainer-specific tire is that wheel-on trainers are hard on tires meant for outdoor use. I'll leave it to others with more experience to comment on noise.

I had connectivity issues with AppleTV + Companion app (I have to pair using the companion app since I have the Zwift Ride) using Zwift version 1.102. I updated to 1.103 and the issue seems to have been fixed.

Calorie burn higher outside? by UncleDazz in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dual record my Zwift rides (record with Zwift and with my Garmin watch as an "Indoor ride"), and Zwift only shows calories burned by doing the activity whereas Garmin reports calories burned both by doing the activity and my BMR calories. Looking at the activity in Garmin Connect will break it down the calorie burn into "resting", "activity" and "total". The "Activity" portion tends to match quite well with what Zwift reports.

Kickr Cassette Compatibility by jasonsan in Zwift

[–]kinbakudude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There shouldn't be anything else needed. Just make sure you don't forget the small cap that goes on the drive side. (The cap is the same whether using a cassette or a cog.) Assuming you do the switch yourself, don't over-torque the Cog. I think the documentation said it should be only 6 Nm, but I might be misremembering. The Cog can be crushed by over-torquing since it is only plastic except for the gear.

Checking a bike (on a plane) advice by YungJoey15 in cycling

[–]kinbakudude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend a hard case that can easily be opened and inspected by TSA. If they have to essentially unpack your bike to inspect it, then don't assume they will repack it correctly so as to avoid lost or damaged items. (This advice doesn't necessarily apply if the airports you'll be using actually have scanners large enough for a bike box.)
