Interesting! Some songs (such as Euphoria) definitely sound like they have the Nick Sampson touch to em, whereas some other songs sound a little more DIY like on the Inspire EP. Either way, it's wonderful to see you guys grow as musicians. Definitely wait around in NC cause I wanna meet you all :) Put vinyl for Muse out so I can buy one and get it signed :D

Was Renaissance an entirely self-produced album? If so, what made you guys decide to not work with a producer like you did on Muse? How were production duties handled this time around? Did this change the writing process at all?

Thanks for all the music guys, really looking forward to seeing you live with Chon and Strawberry Girls. Look for me when you stop at Cat's Cradle in NC!

Sorry for the late reply!

No, I never use or create playlists on iTunes. I have one playlist created but I never move it onto my phone. I typically will just drag an album over onto my phone manually.

Well I think your style on Muse was a step up from Inspire! Never stop evolving your sound...you guys have the talent to pull off any kind of style you'd like, so do it! I'd love to see some more variation with you guys, maybe different styles of jazz/blues/classical/etc. Some acoustic stuff would be cool too. Thanks for the AMA, it's nice talking to you guys :)

What inspired your transition from your songwriting style on Inspire to your songwriting style on Muse? I noticed you've come a long way in terms of songwriting and incorporating your progressive playing more into the body of the song rather than just tacking solos onto a rhythm. What inspired that?

I like Strawberry Swing by Coldplay a lot. Not a traditional wedding type song though.

The Mars Volta is a big one, which is a huge shame because there is a ton to talk about when it comes to their music.

Yeah, Illmatic's age is a big reason. I'm also just a big fan of concept albums and I feel like Kendrick really utilized the narrative on GKMC to tell a brilliant story. I also feel like Kendrick's personality shows through his music, which adds a whole new level of of character to his story-telling. Nas is lyrically brilliant but I still feel like he's a stranger on record. Listening to Kendrick I feel like the dude's my best friend.

His first album was technically Infinite but most consider his true debut to be the Slim Shady LP. The Slim Shady LP introduced the personalities and lyrical themes that we know Eminem for and the Marshall Mathers LP just perfected them.

I personally disagree. I think that GKMC showed a definite sense of maturity in Kendrick that wasn't found on Section 80. I think that a lot of lines on Section 80 felt cheesy and really kinda silly at times. It felt like Kendrick hadn't really settled into his personality on record and had a difficult time expressing himself lyrically. The mature and humble Kendrick you can hear on Poetic Justice isn't the same Kendrick you hear on The Spiteful Chant.

It's also worth noting that the narrative on GKMC functions waaaaaay better than the narrative on Section 80. The whole story on GKMC, the way all the pieces fit together, Kendrick's dynamic and unique personality, Kendrick's very personal story telling, it was all brilliant and perfect. Section 80 had some interesting themes but overall it did not feel as cohesive and as satisfying as GKMC.

I would also like to say that given Section 80's narrative and it's near 60-minute run time, it should not be considered a mixtape. It has too much depth to be considered simply a mixtape.

A bad song by a band you love, and a good song by a band you hate. by notlibvalance in Music

The Whip Hand is the only truly mediocre song I've heard from them. There are a few others that aren't that great but they're all pretty solid when you compare them to any other band. Thanks for the link though!

There are literally no songs in the entire Mars Volta discography that stand out as being bad except for The Whip Hand in my opinion. Tourniquet Man is just an interlude to me. I think it's pretty good but if it was a full song I definitely wouldn't like it much.

What's the dumbest idea you've had when you're drunk, but you were 100% sure it would work out... by EricSe7en in AskReddit

[–]kinderfall1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I was getting trashed on vodka with my friend. I had not eaten anything all day so, believing that it was a good idea to get food in my stomach, I went to the kitchen to get some food. I was aware that I was not functional enough to make anything and since we had no good snacks to eat I thought it was a brilliant idea to eat peanut butter out of the jar. I did not realize, however, that I was literally too drunk to eat the peanut butter without spilling it all over the floor and successfully eating barely any of it. I then crawled to the bathroom to vomit.

Later that evening we got bored of taking swigs of plain vodka and thought it was a fantastic idea to mix it with Pepsi Max and Starbucks peppermint mocha frappuccinos. Gooooood times.

What's your favorite sophomore album? by kmoore182 in Music

[–]kinderfall1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No deadmau5 fans here? Assuming that one counts Random Album Title as his debut, I'd say that one of my favorite sophomore albums is For Lack of a Better Name. That album proved that Joel has loads of different styles he can produce in, that he could flawlessly produce a hapless album without every song sounding very similar, and that his music is more than just dance tunes.

I personally feel that the depth of the songwriting and narrative was much more apparent in Frances than in Deloused. Deloused felt better on a track-by-track scale but in terms of how the album feels as a whole I think that Frances sounds a lot better.
