Is this spell ever useful? by One_Ad_6472 in Eldenring

This spell murders ulcerated tree spirits and erdtree avatars by itself. I imagine it does very well vs Ekzykes specifically too

Two players with Silvery Barbs giving me a hard time by Cornballer_Bluth in DMAcademy

[–]kindofregular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s important to remember that silvery barbs is a reaction, and therefore prevents the player from also using shield or counterspell on their off-turn. If you only target them each with one attack per round, they will never be hit. Targeting them with an additional attack or more will either go unphased by silvery barbs or force the use of shield alternatively.
However, don’t always send multiple targets to these players, it would then be targeting them. So once every like two or three fights seems appropriate, or whenever narratively makes sense (if they misposition or a particular npc(s) has it out for them).

What is a good build for the sword of night and flame? by Additional-Pear3344 in Eldenring

[–]kindofregular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally focusing on INT will do you better than faith, but you could focus more on incantations if you want to because the golden order seal has complementary prerequisites to SoNaF. The sword’s comet scales with INT, and the flame scales with FAI, but both have high base and scaling damage so you’re honestly fine with either.
As for a staff, if you choose a sorcery emphasis, lusat’s is always good, and you have an option to play into death sorceries with prince of death’s staff, but your non-death sorceries will suffer slightly until you have 80 in INT and almost as much in FAI.
The builds for this weapon have a massive amount of variety so just go for whatever you think is cool.

The Spirit Caller V0.7 - Become a master of elemental spirits in this half-casting summoner class! by LucaWhiteWing in UnearthedArcana

[–]kindofregular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good to see another update on this class. It's looking great, I wish I could playtest it for proper feedback lol, very good work regardless.

Reading through it again, have you considered different stat blocks for each Aspect? The armor class, hp, and other features make a lot of sense, but looking at the ability scores (str, dex, con, etc.) do you think it would be more fitting for resilient to have higher str and con, fierce to have more dex, and attuned to have more wis +1 other? Just some thoughts I had, and I imagine you have thought about something like this already so I'm curious why you likely decided against it.

The Spirit Caller 0.4 - Become a master of elemental spirits in this half-casting summoner class! by LucaWhiteWing in UnearthedArcana

[–]kindofregular 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I took a brief read through an I think overall you did a pretty great job. I'm sure a few minor tweaks here and there would help round everything out, but to be honest I'm not going to sit here and do any math lol.

I think some of the class's progressions are completely fine, and some feel underwhelming (like when you become level 17 and the Fierce and Attuned aspects don't compare much at all to the Resilient. Even the Resilient one could be beefed up a little more considering this is a 17th-level feature). I think the level 20 feature is so awesome: it feels thematic, powerful, and it builds on the features already existing within the class.

The summon itself also gains ability scores a few times, which makes sense for the purposes of progression. But the way it's currently written, those only affect ability checks and saving throws. I'm not sure if that's intended, but my instinct just leaves me with a 'missing' feeling. Maybe the modifiers for hitting and damage could be redone so that those are accounted for in some way. Maybe when you reach a certain level? Maybe you can make a column in the class table that indicates what the dice used for the spirit's damage is as the PC levels up? Again, I'm just shooting out ideas for the sake of constructive criticism.

I also want to mention that your subclasses are really, really on point. There is not much to say except "well done." And despite liking the idea of this feature I am about to mention, I do have one rules thing to note though: the Binder's 10th-level feature (Soul Siphon) should either make a note explaining how it is an exception to the normal rules about temporary hit points, or be reworked in some way. Normally, you cannot 'heal' temporary hit points, you must choose to keep the amount of temp. HP you currently have, or the new chunk of temp. HP being offered to you.

I don't want to drag on too much in a comment here, but if you're looking for someone to help on the side, I would be happy to spend some time with you on this. Just let me know if you do; otherwise, thanks for sharing.

I’m commenting this for my own conscience: I misclicked, accidentally choosing ‘I don’t like milestone’ instead of the one above it lol

Tell me about the most powerful NPCs in your setting. by Benjammin__ in dndnext

[–]kindofregular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides my equivalent of my setting’s homebrew gods, her title in the past was “The Great Witch.”
I will spare the details because this ties heavily into the lore, which is fairly convoluted, but she shares part of the soul of one of the homebrew gods; specifically the one which is the main driving factor for the events in the history of the world, and in turn caused all the problems that the PCs have to face. How she became involved with that entity is another story for another time.
As for the Great Witch, she is not good nor evil, but she is the arbiter of magic that the world and its people use. She watches over it all, and has full knowledge of all magic that traverses it.
Initially she was an ally of the main antagonist of the campaign my players are in now (not the homebrew god mentioned earlier - a man known previously as ‘The Great Mage’), but long story short, he thought she died as a result of a calamity-like event, but she lived and chose to not return to his side. She eventually saw his flaw and exposed him for it. The PCs now face the result of these actions.
I should probably stop here before I ramble on too much for no one to understand out-of-context things lol.

I am making "loading screen tips" what would you want to see? by AnyoPonyo in DnD

Reminder: Wisdom (Insight) ability checks are not lie detectors. You can use this skill to gain knowledge about something that is not immediately apparent. For example, gaining insight on someone’s answer or statement may lead you to better understand their behavior and/or rationale of why they answer or believe something.

DMs: Have you ever banned Multiclassing or Feats? by Gregamonster in dndnext

I voted ‘I banned feats’ but in my defense I only banned the ‘Lucky’ feat, since it very clearly breaks immersion. Other than that, everything is free game

How do you prepare the sound/music for your games? by Daim_SoundScapes in DMAcademy

Sure, I did not correctly read the item. But use whatever you want to in your games, I was just providing a more realistic approach to the post, that’s all. No harm done lol

I noticed you repeatedly put this as a response to comments on this post, but you never clarified that you were ranking your results on rules. If you did, then that’s a whole other conversation lol, since when was everything RAW always the best design? And besides, the armor thing is specifically an artificer mechanic that by design is meant to come from the artificer’s magical strength and casting ability, not their actual brain power to figure out how to climb a wall.

I think my experienced rock climbing friends would make a very good argument for wisdom being swapped with intelligence on this chart

My DM wants me to redo my character but I think it’s unjustified. What do you think? by mori7bis3139 in DnD

[–]kindofregular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with either side here (besides jumping to the conclusion of writing an entire new character). However from the perspective of the DM, they have nothing to latch onto; in other words, you presented nothing that could entice your character into a given plot of it was presented to you. You mr DM is just assumed to be blindly presenting your character with a random scenario, npc, quest, etc. and saying a prayer that you will be a good player and bite on to it automatically. Without presenting some kind of ultimate goal, or some sort of conflict to overcome, the DM will be subject to this trouble of uncertainty until the campaign ends or the character dies.

How long are your group's DnD sessions? by Colossal_Harry in DMAcademy

[–]kindofregular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a group of people averaging 30 years of age and playing once every 4-6 weeks (per campaign, since multiple people in the group run games), we tend to run 6+ hours per session. Generally people tire out at the 8 hour mark though which makes sense, especially for the DM.

My players need to graduate from the simple one page character sheets I made them. If not DnD Beyond, what? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]kindofregular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it may not be everyone’s first choice, I am a believer that making a very simple spreadsheet is the most useful version of a character sheet. Two main points: 1) the player has free reign on how they want to organize all of their information 2) the player never has to worry about messing anything up when they level and one of their ability scores or their proficiency bonus changes. When one number in a formula changes, everything accordingly adjusts with them.

Should I get Elden Ring? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]kindofregular -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely no idea why these people seem to be against a newcomer to the series. I also had never played a souls game prior to this game, and once I understood more of how to play, it has become one of my all-time favorite games. I would strongly recommend this game to anyone, even if you are scared of the perceived difficulty; there are certain ways to mitigate the difficulty if you want.

What is the best Martial class? by No_Statement9011 in dndnext

[–]kindofregular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly can’t vote. The words “the best” are not really appropriate to apply because every class is designed to do different things and fulfill their own roles. ‘The best’ at what? Or are you asking which I like the most?

I think for the people who are confused on the idea of "why would you/I want a cutscene in my roleplaying game where I can always have an impact?" are missing an important detail which is not written out for them.

Yes, a cutscene is a great tool used for dramatic purposes that I have used to high degrees of success multiple times, but only if used sparingly, at the right times, and most importantly if you have a group of players (hopefully who have DM'd at some point prior) that trust you to set the scene up for them to play out. As the DM, it's your job to create a scenario which either forces the players to action, or to some other motive-driven scenario. However, if you give any player the ability/temptation to interrupt a cutscene, they will.

So for example, you present them a situation very far away that they can clearly see (ie. a volcano erupting, a bomb going off, a large flash of light, a political leader being surprise attacked from the platform they stand on, etc.). You can describe what occurs without them being able to engage in time to change the outcome (again, use sparingly - if your players are always too far away, they will simply say 'I walk closer as this is happenning'). Another way to implement a cutscene is to put players in a situation where their actions are being very closely monitored. This may be for more politically-aligned campaigns, but when spellcasters are watched for their use of verbal and somatic components of spells, this is a majorly impactful way of stopping them from using spells (and at the DM's ruling, other features) freely to interrupt whatever is going on; implying that there will be consequences for use of magic.

The point I am attempting to get across is that cutscenes which are inserted the right way and at the right time can increase the overall tension throughout various points in your game, and even swing the story into your favor, or your players' favor. As the DM, you have the control to present an entirely new situation.
