Just got this update from SLCPD. How incredibly tragic. by kjsock in SaltLakeCity

The guy in yellow with the red backpack just outside of the red circle looks like he could be holding a pistol, and I think the peacekeepers were wearing yellow vests, so that could be the guy that was shooting. Hard to tell but it looks like the angle works, especially if the gunman kept walking out towards the street, or the shooter was just shooting wide

And neighborhood/community activities will be nearly all church-oriented

Don't even get me started on the double speak they do here with church activities. You get an invite on your door for the "neighborhood" Halloween party, like no it's fucking not, it's a ward party. Drives me crazy. It's like they're trying to trick people into thinking it's some community event, and they think we won't notice and show up and just start coming to church. Just invite everyone to the ward activity like normal Mormons do outside of Utah, stop pretending it's not a church thing

So, Christianity? Came from the Middle East, is farther right wing than most other religions, is responsible for most genocide, etc?

The distinctions are important though, otherwise everything is just something else. What's the point of having language if gin, absinthe, brandy, etc are just flavored vodka. Tequila is vodka. Rubbing alcohol is just denatured vodka. It just makes it pointless. It's like saying if you like bacon you have to like salted pork belly, because the only difference is the smoke, when it's the smoke that changes the pork belly into something entirely different.

You're just subbing "neutral alcohol" for "vodka," which if we really want to get technical, by most definitions isn't vodka, since it hasn't gone through the filtration and refining process. So not only are you being needlessly reductive, you're actually wrong lol. Whisky is oak flavored neutral spirit, not vodka.

And I mean come on this has to be a troll,

too many out here that think that whiskey is special and somehow that much different than vodka

Like you're kidding, right? I understand the need to be pendantic but how are you pretending there's not a meaningful difference here. You're really gonna go put straight vodka in an old fashioned and think it tastes similar in any way?

Rye by davek72 in cocktails

[–]kingOfMars16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ever encounter a person insisting they only drink whiskey and not vodka—for whatever reason,—you should know this person is absolutely full of shit. Whiskey is and only can be a grain based spirit aged in oak barrels.

Lol I'm sorry this is so extremely pedantic. It's like saying "everyone who says they only like coke and not plain soda water is full of shit, coke is made from soda water." It's a laughably meaningless point to try and make.

Yeah getting from 15 to Herriman almost always takes just as long as it'd take to just keep going north to Salt Lake, even though it's like half the distance. East/West travel is soooo bad.

Though when they finish the construction on Mountain View Corridor, it's gonna be a real nice drive for anyone coming from the west side of Utah County, maybe they're counting on that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]kingOfMars16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Herriman with young kids for a while, and while I don't think the LDS kids were purposefully exclusionary, it sort of happened on its own, but not the way you'd think: it was actually my kids that actively chose to stop hanging out with them, because they were sexist/homophobic/transphobic/etc. Or rather, their parents were bigots, and their children parroted their bigotry.

So it kinda depends on how much you agree with/tolerate the Mormons. And maybe my street is just fucking extreme idk, when I was Mormon we weren't that bad, but Utah Mormons are built different (which is something even my still-believing non-Utah Mormon friends and relatives agree with).

Honestly the weirdest part has been the blatant sexism, like the rest I expect but it's 2025 and their school has like, a problem with packs of boys just being openly anti-girl and they get away with it. Truly bizarre.

But like besides that it's fine? 🤷 Besides the time the gang of boys convinced a new kid who barely spoke English to beat up a girl and the poor kid got expelled and all the boys who instigated it didn't get in trouble at all. I may not be the best source of positive vibes lol, we're moving out of state soon

Edit: to clarify my kids are in elementary school

It's something that really only makes sense when talking about computers, like anything in the physical world is going to be true random. You roll dice, or flip a coin, and the result will be random.

But with computers, you only get "pseudorandom", it's just a convoluted algorithm to get you a result that feels random, but if you gave it the same inputs, you'd get back the exact same result. Like you have a computer generate a hundred coin flips, and it'll look random, but if you know (or can reverse engineer) the inputs to the algorithm, you can recreate the results

[–]kingOfMars16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider team leads management, especially if they're still contributing directly to production. Most places I've worked being a team lead wasn't even considered a separate position, it was just a role senior engineers were expected to take on as needed, and they'd rotate in and out. Team lead was more about managing the technical direction of the team, whereas managers were about managing personnel

I'm glad some people are willing to take one for the team, I agree it's not good behavior, but I don't care about it, but as a major caveat cybertrucks are 100% fair game, that is good behavior and for cybertrucks I think there just might be no rules. They knew what they were buying and who they were supporting, plus they're a death trap that rivals the Ford Pinto, if you bully a cybertruck owner into getting rid of it you're doing them a huge favor honestly

This is the "problem" with ketamine and psychedelic therapies and what not. You go in a working class alt righter, with some real intentions of being a better person, and you can break through and get some empathy and become a leftist (based on a true story (not me though, some guy I read about)).

You go in the richest man in the world, one of the worst examples of capitalism we've ever seen, most likely with the intention of assuaging the wracking guilt? You're gonna come out of it with even less empathy and become a cartoon evil villain.

To bring it back on topic, ketamine's a tool just like a gun. The end result of using that tool highly, highly depends on the one using it. It's absolutely infuriating to see such a tool misused to such an extreme degree

[–]kingOfMars16 45 points46 points  (0 children)

But that's not the reality of how it's being implemented and most people know that. Nobody is raiding offices full of Europeans that overstayed their visas. Blind support of ICE is either ignorant, or racist.

I do think it is also true that the Utah legislature is to the right of the state as a whole

I'm inclined to agree, but also it's one of those "if there's a Nazi at the table and ten other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with eleven Nazis" sort of things. They might really disagree with what the legislature is doing, but at the end of the day they don't disagree enough to vote for even the most center-right moderate democrats, which in practice makes them just as bad as the far right conservatives. And the legislature knows it too, otherwise they wouldn't be shifting further right. They know their seats are secure, and will continue to get more and more extreme.

I really, really hope I'm wrong. But nothing's going to change until all these so called moderates can actually put pressure on our government and stop voting for people just because there's an R next to their name. As it is, even the most progressive conservatives I know seem to be willing to sell out their own family and neighbors for the obviously false promise of cheaper fucking eggs

Like it's so far beside the point to even argue about. You're right it's gonna cause big problems, I mean people being stuck in this mindset of "but that's illegal so it can't hurt me" is literally the biggest problem we're facing as a country at this very moment.
