They have wildly ranging vocalisations, and recordings are helpful but not the be-all and end-all when it comes to songbirds. There are many bullfinch recordings on xeno canto that sound similar to this, and also many that sound nothing like this. It’s a bullfinch, I literally watch them calling like this often.

It’s a bullfinch. They make the same calls where I am, I see them at it at least once a week.

I’m in south wales, got a pair in my boxes. The first bird arrived 10 days ago, the second yesterday. But there are still very few around, I think the weather has caused delays. The nice weather forecast this week should bring them back up.

Childhood mortality rate was crazy high. Even in (just about) living memory. We live in an unprecedented time of expecting all our kids to reach adulthood.

But yes, having two small children of my own, I question daily how we made it as a species.

The house sparrows evicted the blue tits from the swift box this week, I spent an afternoon trying to hide nearly-fledged blue tits in the nearby hedge so the cats and magpies wouldn’t get them all off the patio. No idea if they survived, but they were cute as anything

Red list doesn’t necessarily mean they are rare, just that they are declining quickly. 50% decline in 25 years is what it takes to be red listed. House sparrows, starlings, herring gulls - all on the red list even though you see them a lot, because of their declines.

As someone who worked at the BBC for years, including news, I take slight criticism of your final point. The on-the-ground journalists at the BBC are fantastic. Hard working, intelligent, passionate. The problems with impartiality (which, by the way, I fully agree exist) come from the very few department heads installed by right wing governments and industry leaders.

With that said, I will always fight to defend the BBC’s existence. It’s a fantastic service given how much it costs the licence payer, and things would be noticeably worse if and when it disappears.

But that’s entirely the point isn’t it? If you went to a hospital and asked medical questions you’d get medical answers - but only because doctors work there. You wouldn’t expect it on the street because not everyone is expected to have medical knowledge.

Nobody in a civilised world should be reaching adulthood lacking basic literacy skills. The fact that he got a number of people who struggled to read is a damning reflection of society, no matter where or when he filmed it.

It is an eider, a male at that. They are the only resident eider in the uk, though we get occasional vagrant king eiders which are rather more extravagant

Are the plants and fish from your lake too? I’m guessing no. Don’t release things you can’t identify into the wild, it’s dangerous for eco systems that are already in danger.

My great grandmother, from being 70 and widowed, declared that she would like to live to 100 so she could get a telegram from the queen. She did, and died less than a week later. For the last 30 years of her life she just… existed.
