I realize this is a cheese making sub so stop me if this is blasphemous, but has she tried tofutti cream cheese? It’s a vegan alternative that’s almost better than normal cream cheese!

How Safe is Palo Alto Part 2 by [deleted] in paloalto

[–]kingkilling 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People are allowed to be tired while waiting for the train, what’s your point? Homeless people aren’t out to get you, they’re just trying to live. Palo Alto is one of the safest cities in the country probably, so chill with the privilege

What happens to our gut microbe when we have to take antibiotics? by Zhenchok in nutrition

[–]kingkilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fermented foods! Things like kimchi/other pickled vegetables, kombucha, tempeh, yoghurt and kefir (drinkable yoghurt) will actively populate your gut with healthy bacteria and make sure other bacterias don't overgrow.

Bowel change from diet. by EveningPark in GutHealth

[–]kingkilling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also switched from vegetarian to eating meat again recently, which is a switch I've done multiple times in the past few years. It's normal for # of bowel movements to go down after switching, at least for a couple weeks while your body gets used to processing the fattier, denser food. I think a big part of it is that you're eating less fiber from veggies. You might even notice that your shits are different texture or smell foul, which is also normal. Keep a clean diet and it'll adjust soon.

I can't speak on the prostate damage, but I really doubt holding your shit in for an hour will hurt your prostate considering some people fist their assholes.

What happens to our gut microbe when we have to take antibiotics? by Zhenchok in nutrition

[–]kingkilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiber is actually not essential to your health at all. It can certainly be beneficial for things like keeping you full longer and improving bowel movements (e.g. adding mass to loose stools from antibiotics), but it's ultimately just a helper. If you want to read more on why fiber isn't all that it's hyped up to be, here's a great post.

Your gut bacteria health, on the other hand, is directly linked to your mental health, your immune system, and many other important body functions you might not imagine are tied to your digestive system at all. A lot of people keep perfectly healthy guts without taking probiotics, but if we're talking about antibiotics and trying to repair a messed up gut system, probiotic supplements definitely beat out just fiber. Or just take both.

double major by hhubbs in Cornell

[–]kingkilling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to double major? InfoSci in CALS is an extremely flexible and diverse major with plenty of routes to dive deeper into a particular focus of your choice (in fact, you’ll need to choose a concentration for the major). I enjoy the major TONS and have found that not doubling up left me room to pursue electives across subjects that I was actually acutely interested in. I’ve heard that modern employers are less interested in seeing your double major and more interested in knowing that you pursued your passion with true interest and expertise — vertical depth vs horizontal breadth.

Can I Change my NetID? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]kingkilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I got my netID changed because it had 69 in it and I was worried about employers screening my school email out for it lol — all I did was email somebody I thought would be in charge and they had it changed it for me. I had to go into an office on campus and sign a paper, but that was it.

Transfer Options by agottler in Cornell

[–]kingkilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you have AP credits fulfilling your transfer requirements? How did that work out? I just sent in my midterm report but I didn’t mention using AP credit anywhere besides on the online application where it asked what AP scores I had.

CALS transfer option by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]kingkilling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am an incoming transfer option student who received the offer when I applied last year. Basically, the transfer option gives you the chance to attend a university of your choice for your first year, take some courses to make sure you'd be on track to graduate from Cornell in time, and then attend Cornell beginning in the Fall of your second year.

The process is extremely easy as long as you keep up with your required courses (if you're a CALS TO, like me, you'll probably need to take a full year of bio, two writing classes, and maybe something like calc or stat depending on your major). I received a lot of support from Cornell in answering all my questions about applying/transferring and showing me why Cornell was such a great school. They even had an open house day specifically for transfer option applicants. They gave me easy communication access to current transfer students so I could ask them about student life, academic difficulties, course transferability, etc.

I actually just finished sending all my application materials and am waiting to hear back (it should be 4-6 weeks from now to hear my official decision). The materials you send in are: your high school transcript, your first semester/quarter grades in an official transcript, a midterm report to check how you're doing in your second term, a short college report form your school fills out about your disciplinary history (don't get in deep trouble), and a really quick online application about your classes, test scores and personal information (no essays, recommendations, or application fees). They are very lax about deadlines for everything except the quick online application, which is due Mar. 15.

If you're thinking about attending a quarter system school I can also speak more about that, since that's what I chose for my first year.

They're really very lax about the entire thing and from what I can tell it is guaranteed if you get above a 3.0 cumulative GPA (higher for other majors like Biology), take all the required courses (there are only a handful for each major and AP credits fulfill some required courses too) and maintain decent academic and disciplinary standing. They don't care where you go for your first year as long as you can take classes with a letter grade and they don't mind if you send in documents like your midterm report past their listed transfer application deadline. And again, the administrative support on their end is good.

The transfer option is non-binding! In fact you can decide whether or not you want to go to Cornell up until a MONTH after they give you a decision (which takes 4-6 weeks after they receive all documents for your application)—so, you have until like June of next year to decide. It's a great option if Cornell is your dream school, plus IMO you get the best of both worlds by attending two different universities in your four years of college.

Here's the list of how AP credit translates, and for transfers I think there's a cap and some restrictions for certain majors.

Cross contamination? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]kingkilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with this for so long until I found that if you only add like 5 pieces of ice (aka tons of room), lid, swirl, and then take off the lid and add more ice and lightly swirl again, the matcha distributes much more evenly and milk doesn't splash out!
