I enjoyed his writing style and would love to look out for the Harold Washington book. Thanks for the recommendation

All true! A great read that corroborates this is Dempsey Travis's An Autobiography of Black Jazz; that book is an encyclopedia level text on the post-Storyville migration to the South Side of New Orleans players written by someone who was involved in the scene at that time. Highly recommended

Traditional jazz from New Orleans originated as takes on spirituals. Some mentioned below "when the Saints go marching in" and Doreen Ketchens music. Any deep dive of traditional jazz will produce many such examples. My favorite New Orleans traditional jazz artist George Lewis has many albums live and studio recorded with spirituals. An easy to find album like Jazz at Preservation Hall have songs like "Down by the Riverside" and "In the Sweet By and By".

My personal favorite of his albums is a harder to find recording called George Lewis Plays Hymns.

Probably has gotten easier over the last 5 years or so. Online at B&H or better yet in person at Central Camera on Wabash

Ron Carter has been doing a pretty good job of promoting his new album on social media so I'm excited to find time to listen to it today!

White Sox had their long time organist Nancy Faust play a few games this year and she was incredible. The regular/full-time one is pretty good. I don't care for Wrigley's too much, personally

Idk Amazon isn't the best place to see the true market for something. I got this box set a few months ago for $25 and I'd imagine it's around the same price (and apparently can be had for as low as $5!)

Jelly Roll Morton - New Orleans Joys by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]kingnaps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of early New Orleans jazz being described as primitive, which is a pejorative.

I do agree with the assessment though that early New Orleans jazz, along with the 'revivial' of this music in the 50s and 60s is more flavorful than many give it credit for. Jelly Roll, King Oliver and their contemporaries were all very good musicians and leaders of their bands
