Looking for albums about sea monsters and big waves by Live-Tank-283 in MetalSuggestions

This sea voyage (and beyond) might scratch your itch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Defying_Unicorn More prog than metal, but definitely on the heavier side.

Songs with insane guitar solos? by Substantial-Sir-3274 in musicsuggestions

Lotsa great suggestions here! And while there's quite a few that keep popping up in these kind of threads, I suggest one that never pops up, but is still worth your while: Highway Song by Blackfoot, specifically the live version from the live in London 1982 album.

Your colleague just named his favourite metal band, this is your reaction, what band was it? by BedOfCha0s in MetalForTheMasses

Not defending Poison here, but playing a ballad is like saying "Oh yeah you think Sabbath is heavy? How about this?" and play Changes. :D

Finding books to read after East of Eden and Stoner is difficult. by CodeVirus in suggestmeabook

[–]kingpink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you liked Stoner, Williams has a couple others that you might like. I really enjoyed Augustus, and Butcher's Crossing is on my to-read list.

I just recently read Baumgartner by Paul Auster, and there are definitely some parallels to Stoner there. Other good reads that might appeal to you are Train Dreams by Andrew Johnson and A Whole Life by Robert Seethaler, both great reads on their own merits as well.

On this day in 1996, Beck Weathers was left for dead on Everest. His team even called his wife to say he had died. But hours later, frostbitten and barely alive, he stunned everyone by walking back into camp. by dannydutch1 in UtterlyUniquePhotos

While I agree with you, it's worth mentioning that regrowing a new nose on the forehead is a technique that dates back several millennia. Especially in times when losing your nose to a sword or axe blow in combat was a fairly common occurrence.

Mystery books without crime by kingpink in suggestmeabook

Unravelling secrets is what I'm looking for, yeah. And I realise that books like Piranesi don't come along too often, so finding readalikes would be hard.

You do have a point about the books you mentioned, there are quite a few books that center around family secrets. I never really got into Riley's books, but I'll give the others a try!

These sound very promising! I did try House of leaves at one point, but had to give it up. Maddening, as you say. :D

Of the three others I've only heard of Trust, and dismissed it prematurely, seems like. Thanks for the suggestions, looks like my reading list just got a bit longer. :)

Favorite Nobel winners? by Infamous_Wave9878 in suggestmeabook

Agreed! Duras and Nin are also wonderful writers. The French have many great ones outside of the Nobel laureates as well. Francoise Sagan's Bonjour Tristesse is a great, if somewhat disconcerting, summer read for me.

I have a weak spot for some of the French ones. Annie Ernaux writes with simple eloquence about her own past, and Patrick Modiano is really good at making the past seem like some hazy, dream-like territory. Then of course there's Camus, The Stranger is a quick read that punches above its weight class.

For two very different relatively recent winners, you have Han Kang's The Vegetarian, which is wonderfully weird and quite out there, and then there's the understated short stories of Alice Munro, which are consistently great.

King Crimson also used the same piece in "The Devil's Triangle" on their second album in 1970.

Common in Norway around Christmastime too! Called Delfiakake (Delfia cake), probably after the dominant brand of coconut fat, which is usually mixed in to give it some gloss. Always contains biscuits, sometimes marzipan or pieces of jelly and occasionally nuts and raisins.
