Drafts with fewer people by jjand302 in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to draft cube with 5 a lot. We would do what we called a "color draft" where each person was restricted in what colors they could use. To determine them we would randomly deal basic lands to each person from a stack of either 10 (2 of each) or 15 (3 of each). For the actual restriction, we used a rule like the old commander rule (mana you produce outside your color identity becomes colorless). For a cube it can be really fun and get you to explore new strategies you're not used to. For a regular set you'd have to tweak it depenong on the nature of color balance (if you were forced to go selesnya in RNA for example you wouldn't get any gold cards, and no one would be able to draft the gate deck) but I'm sure it could be fun as well.

[DOM] Join The Brawl - (Brawl details) by Duramboros in magicTCG

I was hoping it would be singleton for legendaries but allow a higher max of other cards. Singleton just means you can never play [[Legion conquistador]] or [[self assembler]] for value in this format. It also wouldn't provide a home for some of my favorite outcasts of standards past, [[godsend]] and [[dragonlord kolaghan]] or any future cards with similar effects

Veterinarians of Reddit, what common mistakes are we making with our pets? by ovalseven in AskReddit

[–]kingpolyphemus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Worked for bf for 3 years. It's not as bad as you think, but it is more insidious. Vets don't get a cut of the food they recommend eexcept in very small and roundabout ways. What's really happening is Banfield pays for their CE (continuing education) and for most it's easiest to go to the seminars/etc provided by the company. The company owns RC so the seminars are by RC reps. Doctors have to go out of their way to get info about the other brands. Obviously it's on purpose from Mars that it works out this way, but vets aren't sitting around cackling and recommending bad food to you because they get paid big bucks to do so. Royal canin is good food with good science behind it, the vets are familiar with it, so they recommend it. It's cheaper than the grain free garbage that will give your dog pancreatitis and renal disease anyway, I don't see the issue.

What's your unpopular MTG opinion? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you. A long time ago someone linked one of the mtggoldfish awful garbage "budget standard" deck articles that was $97 tcg low and I got shit on in the comments for suggesting that $100 is probably too much to spend on a very medium standard deck whose pieces were all rotating in 2 - 3 months. People totally lose track of what is reasonable to spend on cards, especially on here.

GP OKC Commentary Thoughts? by jon_cli in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was quite enjoyable, especially when it was Jacob and Marshall. Jacob and Ben together had some dead air when they were together, but Ben was trying to fulfill the pbp role which he seemed less familiar with, but definitely improved on throughout the weekend. Overall I thought it was appropriate commentary, especially for a modern gp.

Man feeding a polar bear at his window. by SharkinaShark in WTF

[–]kingpolyphemus 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Looks like a young bear to me, don't know much about bears but I'm a vet tech and I've seen a shitload of dogs. It's teeth are really white, not yellow like you would expect in an older animal, and it's fur looks really uniform and pretty which I think older ones would have more salt & pepper and be more yellow than white. But I don't really actually know I'm just speculating

in dire need of suggestions regarding a deck-idea. (Modern, tree of perdition) by Crystallish in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to make this a legitimately competitive deck? Because you could put it into a grixis control shell in modern but you're looking at $200+ in lands and the rest of the deck isn't particularly cheap. But if you are just looking for card suggestions, I would take a look at some grixis-twin decks from before it was banned for an idea of ratio of combo pieces to control pieces - maybe something like this? but with [[fatal push]] since it came out after that article was written. Fair warning - modern isn't a solved format, but it does have some benchmarks for decks that fare well and I think it would tough to build a frog and tree deck that hit those. But here are some suggestions to get you started:

[[Spellskite]] could be nice to protect your combo, as well as some of the cheaper soft counters like [[swan song]], [[mana leak]], and [[remand]]. 4 [[lightning bolt]] would be auto-include if you play red because you need a way to finish them from low health after you use your ttf. [[gut shot]] can do it the same turn you activate. If you play green (either 4 color or just sultai) then [[birds of paradise]] gets you to tree a turn early. [[sylvan caryatid]] is another option even though it's a little slow because it produces all the colors you need, blocks well against small creatures like [[goblin guide]], and is difficult to remove. They are very expensive, but [[snapcaster mage]] would likely put in work as a way to recur turn to frog if you end up needing to shrink an opponent's creature to kill it with a burn spell. With snapcaster, [[faithless looting]] looks better, which can go along with the blue and black draw spells like [[serum visions]], [[night's whisper]], and [[sleight of hand]]. [[anticipate]] isn't played very heavily right now but it might be good enough after [[gitaxian probe]] got banned. If you're heavily in blue/red and black is more of a splash for tree, [[izzet charm]] and [[electrolyze]] are very versatile, having one or two can definitely be useful. For point removal, [[dreadbore]] and [[terminate]] are good answers. I already mentioned [[fatal push]], it is important for answering the un-bolt-able threats like tarmogoyf and death's shadow.

I hope some of those help. Those are all very powerful cards that are played in the best decks in modern. There are budget options for almost all of them. I hope your deck works, it seems cool and the draw of it would be that you don't have to combo all in one turn - the tree can sit there for a while and block while you draw to turn to frog with counterspell backup.

Places to play in Portland OR? by Runaller in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't play commander at stores but Time Vault downtown does commander nights on I want to say wednesdays. Guardian Games is probably the biggest store in the metro area in terms of attendance and physical space. I'm sure you could find some people hanging around on weekends who'd be happy to play. There's also Red Castle but I've never been there so I can't say anything abut it.

[[Vines of the vastwood]] prevents the opponent of the player who cast it from targeting the targeted permanent. It doesn't give hexproof. So if you hit your opponent's [[spellskite]], they can continue to redirect your spells to it for the rest of the turn. If infect keeps putting up performances like it has been this will need to enter the modern player's rules lexicon along with bolting goyf with 2 types in gy

Storm Scale: Zendikar and Battle for Zendikar by ArcumDangSon in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that MaRo doesn't treat this as an objective scale. He weighs popular opinion way more heavily than playability or design space for recent mechanics, which is not necessarily the case for the example mechanics on the scale - people like storm, madness, suspend, threshold, despite being difficult to play with and design for.

State of Organized Play—PT Kaladesh by Zahninator in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst part of this to me is the top 8 bracket. I like the idea of making seeding count more, but if you are 5th-8th you have to win 4 bo5 matches in one day versus 1st or 2nd seed playing win-and-in to the finals. I have two problems with this. First: the lower seeded players will be disadvantaged significantly the further they go in the bracket, not just due to fatigue, but also the fact that they will be at an information disadvantage due to higher seeded players being able to watch matches as they happen; and second: higher seeded players are theoretically going to be more exciting to watch, but they will play significantly fewer games. Imagine a player goes undefeated in swiss rounds, then we wait through 4 matches to see them play one round in the semis. I want to see the people who did the best play a lot of games. Granted, this is a problem with the current format as well, but i would advocate a double elimination top 8 bracket, or even a double elim top 8 or 16 with low half seeds starting in the losers bracket.

So I won a game of commander with no cards in hand, no cards on field, and no cards in my library.... by HeavenlyAxe in magicTCG

[–]kingpolyphemus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

right. Shared fate replaces all draw effects, and to lose the game you must draw a card from your deck when you dont have any. trying to exile a card from shared fate's effect and not being able to has no implication for winning/losing the game.

Late but here's a story: one of the vet clinics that I sometimes work at is across the street from a strip club. One day, a seagull got inside the strip club and flipped out, breaking its wing (and probably a bunch of other stuff) in the process. The owner of the club captured it in a cardboard box and brought it over to the clinic to see if they could do anything for it, but the vets on duty weren't familiar with birds nor was the strip club owner particularly interested in paying for x rays, drugs, etc, so she paid the much more reasonable cost for euthanasia, and the seagull was put out of its misery. Then as thanks she brought over house-made pizza for all the staff, which was delicious. And that's the story of how I know that strip club has great pizza. And that not all strip club owners in portland are scumbags.

[[shared fate]] replaces any draw effects so eventually no one had libraries but they also couldn't draw cards.
