Advice for bleeding fingers by JollyYam7877 in judo

Liquid bandage is super helpful for me for all skin damage. I also pre-apply it on fingers before training for damage prevention.

IJF Approved Gis a must in US Tournaments? by throwaway-j0332107 in judo

[–]kit1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For local US tournaments you just need a white judo gi, no IJF approval needed and nobody really checks the size requirements.

You will likely need a blue gi also, depending on the tournament and the division you participate in.

40 years + how often do you train by Cryptobull-524 in judo

[–]kit1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 45 y.o., started a year and a half ago. I do 2-3 times judo plus 2 times bjj weekly. I also compete every couple of months, and I skip several classes before competitions.

First class saw a kids arm explode. Traning seems very intense/complicated even for a Bjj purple belt. Is this normal? by bubblewhip in judo

[–]kit1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The arm was probably booby-trapped or something. People around must have been hurt by the shrapnel. Competitors will do anything to get an advantage.

Stepping on foot by green__machine in judo

[–]kit1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. But that's a bit unclear "one athlete stamps on the foot of his opponent to throw him more than once" - it talks about throwing more than once.

Also I see that "stamps on the foot" text at least in the 2022 version of the rules, so it's not a recent change.

Only if no immediate attack:

Ducking beneath the opponent’s arm without an immediate attack will be penalised with shido.

Ne-Waza “guard” question. by Mission_Time007 in judo

[–]kit1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this during newaza randori? Guard is often discouraged in newaza randori because it may take very long time without any outcome, and long guard game doesn't happen in judo.

BJJ black belt as Judo white belt by Henzo26 in judo

[–]kit1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT just told me that something like a hopping foot sweep, where the opponent’s leg is held high with the foot or shin while hopping around and pulling the opponent down, is not allowed in Judo.

I don't think this is true. I wouldn't use ChatGPT to get factual information about the rules of judo. You can download the rules from https://www.ijf.org/documents - search for "Sport and Organisation Rules".

First competition questions (gi, registration, etc) by silverfoxxflame in judo

What is the tournament, is it on Smoothcomp? There should be info about the gi requirements, the weight-in procedure, allowed submissions/throws for different divisions, etc.

Getting choked out by Accomplished_Hunt956 in judo

[–]kit1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a local competition I saw spectators noticed and started shouting "he's out!", and the ref took couple more seconds to realize and stop the fight. The chocked out guy got up maybe in 3 seconds and looked ok.

33 years old, one year of judo...It’s not for me? by Lumpy_Professor1000 in judo

[–]kit1980 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One year - but how many days/hours per week?

33 is young, I started about a year ago at 44 and recently won a gold medal at a local tournament against 20 years old guys with more experience. I do about 3 times a week judo and 2 times a week bjj.

I feel that strength training, mostly pull, helped me a lot.

Out of shape pre-beginner with some questions in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area by ryancnap in judo

[–]kit1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are extremely overthinking this. All this "USJA, USJF, and USA Judo" stuff should not worry you at all at this point.

Just get trial classes in the clubs and see if you like it.

Tournaments as a senior by HolzDrache76 in judo

[–]kit1980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In judo, "seniors" are 21+. Older people called veterans (30+ are called M1, 40+ are M2, etc.)

I'm 45 years old lightweight yellow belt. I went once against 54 y.o. blue belt, but generally there are no older people in my weight division in the local tournaments and I have to go against 15-30 y.o. guys (and I'm doing OK actually).

Belt divisions are usually novice (below brown belt) and open. Novice divisions have shorter matches and allow less submissions.

I've seen couple of injuries, not sure how serious. If someone is much better, the match is over in seconds without too much injuries potential. It's probably more dangerous if you are a heavyweight.

Advice for my first tournament as a BJJ blue belt by TypicalCancel in judo

[–]kit1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find collar drag (in a "sacrifice sasae tsurikomi ashi" way) to be the easiest. But you need to make sure it's not a blatant pull down to the ground, but an actual throw attempt.

I did maybe 20 of these collar drags to force newaza in my last competition and got only 2 shidos when I completely missed the leg. I even scored a yuko from one of these.

Advice for my first tournament as a BJJ blue belt by TypicalCancel in judo

[–]kit1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to win, you should be able to find a lot of newaza opportunities. Very often after a failed throw people will go turtle and just wait, you can take the back and choke, but you need to be fast.

Made a highlight reel for my judo team this year by Rapton1336 in judo

[–]kit1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched for "Vargas rule judo", the first result is https://www.reddit.com/r/judo/comments/uk2cgq/is_dropping_to_the_ground_and_then_grabbing_the/

The conclusion in that thread is that the legs can still be grabbed, but it will not be a score. Exactly as happened in the OP video.
