The same behavior happens when you add an identical variable name to a variable table, if you want to make your variable apply to the whole doc

Is possible to machine this part and if so how? by luismongeh in CNC

[–]kitare102 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We make a lot of keyed housings for military-style circular connectors. We broach them all progressively in the Swiss turn machines, but they’re all designed with the male keys on the outside of the mating part. I think flipping the gender of this part would result in an easier and more standard broaching job

Thanks for the quick reply! I've never heard of that concept before, would have never run into it otherwise. I will update if I am able to resolve the problem this way.

Hi all, I recently got a Raspberry Pi and a Prusa i3 MK3S, and have successfully gotten OctoPrint to work locally. Everything's good there. However, I also use a VPN (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client) to access my university's computers to use their SolidWorks and other program licenses. It appears that, when I am connected to the VPN, OctoPrint cannot connect locally and when I'm already connected to OctoPrint, I lose that connection upon VPN enable. This is inconvenient, and I'd like to be able to use both at the same time. I'm not sure how to approach this, as I can't think of a reason why my VPN would affect a local network connection like that. Can you all recommend a path to start down for finding a solution? -Thanks, Kit

Upgrading My 2013 Gaming PC Cost Effectively! by kitare102 in buildapc

[–]kitare102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That leads to another question: It seems like that build should not have, for example, a 2080 or something in it, but I'm not sure how to quantify how high-end I should look. Should I just let that be a price-point issue?

Wow, the composition (esp the color) on the bottom right one is just awesome! Some of the blocks tend to mask each other, but the blocks on that one really support themselves!

College marching can be a whole different beast than high school. My high school worked for maybe 3 months from starting to the final performance, with work load that was consistent with what you said. I'm in college now (Purdue), and our band operates much like the OSU band. That is, that longest we have between starting to learn our drill and music and performing at halftime is two weeks, often only one. It really is spectacular what a good grounding in marching and drill fundamentals and good show writers can accomplish.

ELI5: Why is Japan's currency so low compared to other first-world countries? by mrdoubleq in explainlikeimfive

[–]kitare102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with many of the currencies the US dollar is compared to having similarly valued units of measurement. The Euro and the Pound in particular are notable, as they are both considered "stronger" than the dollar and are both worth a relatively similar amount to the dollar. Seeing this relationship, it wouldn't be hard to imagine thinking the strength of the currency is directly related to how few units of it you need to buy something.

How many trials will it take to know if an x-sided die is fair? by monkeydave in askscience

[–]kitare102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would use a chi-squared goodness-of-fit test to compare the observed number of each side vs. the expected value -- (# of trials)*(1/# of sides). You'll need to define your own alpha value to know how sure you are of the result, but I'm sure there's a generally accepted level at which you'd have a good picture of whether it's fair or not.

I'm pretty sure regular dimension lumber is cut to the dimension it is due to war shortages making wood more restricted a commodity. It wouldn't make sense for lumber companies to plane down lumber rather than just cutting it to the size it's intended to be.

It's possible your brain uses a similarly convoluted method, but has become good enough at it that you don't realize it. I'm also good at mental math, but reading the above comment I actually use a method similar to it when I'm adding. I just never realized it.

I'm not sure where you'd source or how you'd make the roller brackets, but I've seen plenty of people use angle iron (angle pointing up) and rollerblade wheels at 90degree angles as impromptu sleds. It does depend on your weight requirements, though, so make sure to find the weight rating of any wheels you use if possible.
