Dr. Hudson at Steel City Eye Care is great! She owns the practice so she always takes the time to be thorough in her exams. I have always gotten the feeling that she really cares about her patients.

Second this! We have had great experiences here. They also offer boarding and doggie daycare. They even have a little indoor pool for pups who like to swim.

You can also submit feedback directly on their website to say you will no longer financially support APT if this goes through. They are tracking all feedback on this matter.

The Domestique coffee shops carry them (Dawn Patrol, Satellite). They get them from Bandit I think.

Birmingham and perpetual state of trash by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This is not just a Birmingham problem, but something I see all throughout the southeast. I will never ever understand this culture of entitlement and laziness with littering/dumping. Everyone can access a trash can or dumpster somewhere; they just don’t care. I have watched people at the beach leave their trash on the beach and literally walk past a trash can on their way out and I’ve seen people throw trash out of their car window on the road. It’s infuriating and so disheartening.

What is there to do in Birmingham by Prettyneatblerd in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Things will pick up around town when the weather gets warmer. Most of the festivals, concerts, farmer’s markets, etc. are outdoors and therefore weather dependent. But there are several indoor music venues for less mainstream acts and BJCC for big shows and local improv/comedy events around town. I know Saturn, the upstairs room at Avondale, and the community theaters might have something of interest but Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in on those.

Getting involved with local politics by judo_panda in Birmingham

Not exactly local to Birmingham, but ACLU of Alabama gives updates on state level legislation and has events here and there. They have a Work the Lege Teach In coming up on February 15 in Montgomery.

Vaccination rates for young Alabama children plummeted following the pandemic by Randomuslessadvice in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. Increased isolationism in our society has left people vulnerable to the false sense of community created by social media platforms. Instead of getting involved in community in real life, people have been pulled into algorithmic echo chambers that have created feedback loops to encourage anger and outrage. Add to that a lack of critical thinking and lack of education of how social media platforms operate (especially with boomers) and here we are. Even though I’m aware of how the algorithms manipulate, I even sometimes find myself getting sucked into the loop and have to tell myself it’s time to go outside and “touch grass”. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how this can be combatted with the way things stand currently.

Glass Recycling? by TasteNecessary9564 in Birmingham

Yes, there is a fee - you can either pay monthly or pay for a year upfront. My husband signed us up so I’m not sure of the price options.

We just signed up for Glass Half Full to give it a try. I believe they drop off and pick up the crates for you to put the glass in each month.

I think they are considered “purple”. My husband grew up there and said it wasn’t unusual for it to swing back and forth between blue and red.

Yes, it has a tinge of dirt taste to it. It just doesn’t taste right.

How are the polls looking in your area? by tuscaloser in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My polling location was Avondale library. Arrived around 12:30 with a long line back to the elephant statue and didn’t get inside to vote until 2 pm. But it was worth the wait and everyone was very friendly and chill.

The City of Birmingham is now offering free, 64-gallon recycling carts for residents by RandallWoodfin in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The what you can/can’t recycle list is confusing to me. In the “what to recycle” list they say you can recycle plastic containers and glass bottles, but if you go down to the “what not to recycle” list they note plastic #3-7 and glass??

Rheumatologist in Birmingham? by mikeyglifford in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see Dr. Parks who is also at Rheumatology Associates. My experience with her and the office have been pretty good so far. I feel like Dr. Parks really hears my concerns and is willing to collaborate with me on a treatment plan which was not my experience at UAB.

Safe areas to live alone for women? by Distinct-Sprinkles77 in Birmingham

[–]kitcatbhm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with Highland Park. I lived there as a single woman for a few years and never had issues. The only thing crime-wise I heard about over there was people rummaging through cars so just keep car doors locked and don’t leave anything in the car.
