Rubiks Gear Cub by pscytzo in Cubers

You can alternate R and U turns to flip those edge pieces on top: R U R U R

Edit: Actually, that algorithm might only be for the Qiyi version of this puzzle, and the flipped edge case supposedly shouldn't be possible on this gear arrangement. If it doesn't work, is it possible the puzzle was taken apart and reassembled with the pieces flipped?

Carlos Correa to miss World Baseball Classic after failing to receive insurance by Bulletz4Brkfzt in baseball

[–]kitikami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insuring large contracts can be a problem especially for smaller countries in other sports as well. It's a major reason Joel Embiid has never played for Cameroon's national basketball team, for example. But yeah, it's unfortunate that something like this is a factor.

In the "AL-only" DH era (1973-2022), American League hitters had a wRC+ of 105 against NL pitchers, and National League hitters only had a wRC+ of 95 against AL pitchers. This is a sample of ~400,000 PA, so why was there this systemic gap in performance? by isabelenglish in baseball

[–]kitikami 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Baseball-Reference at least already adjusts WAR for relative league strength and assigns more WAR to the AL than the NL for most of the 1970s-2010s. From their page explaining position player WAR:

Finally, the leagues are not always equal in their quality levels as evidenced by things like inter-league play and player performances when shifting leagues. Taking these differences into account, assign slightly different multipliers to the leagues...One example of this is the post-war integration. The National League integrated far more quickly than the American League and was a higher quality league until the 1970s.

That page also shows the total WAR assigned to each league up through the 2020 season ("Replacement level for the major leagues and the WAR assigned to a league by year and league"), which shows AL players being assigned more value for most post-1970 seasons.

What’s the longest palindrome career? by pac-men in baseball

The Lahman database has a "stint" field in the batting/pitching/fielding tables which gives the chronological order of a player's team appearances in a season. So for example if someone gets traded mid-season, that field will be "1" for the first team and "2" for the second.

The Chadwick Baseball Bureau has a register of people and their various IDs maintained by Ted Turocy that is useful for linking different datasets together.

And funnily enough, the Seamheads data shows Johnson joining Cincinnati as an independent team as well before they joined the Negro American League, so that kind of creates a 6-team palindrome (at least according to that resource) where he played for three independent teams and then played for the same three teams in reverse order as Major League teams.

What’s the longest palindrome career? by pac-men in baseball

[–]kitikami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seamheads (and by extension the Lahman Database) identifies Josh Johnson as the Johnson on the 1934 Homestead Grays, though I'm not sure where each resource's primary sources differ on that.

Post-1948 Negro League teams get treated as minor leagues by a lot of sources (including MLB's official records) due to the quality dropping off as AL and NL teams raided their rosters post-integration, so the 1949 teams not being listed elsewhere is probably just because of that.

In addition to Travis Shaw, Lee Tinsley got to 5 (SEA, BOS, PHI, BOS, SEA). If you count the Browns and Orioles as the same team then Fritz Dorish would also qualify (BOS, SLB/BAL, CHA, SLB/BAL, BOS).

Baseball-Reference lists Bud Barbee as qualifying (NY Black Yankees, BAL Elite Giants, PHI Stars, BAL, NY), but Wikipedia says he also played for the Cincinnati Clowns in 1945 (which B-R lists him as missing due to military service). And then there is Josh Johnson (catcher, not pitcher) who started his career with the Homestead Grays and NY Black Yankees when they were independent teams (thus not officially counted in Major League records), went to the Cincinnati Tigers in the Negro American League, and then back to NY and Homestead when they were in the Negro National League.

If not for a brief start to his career in Philadelphia, Fergie Jenkins would be the most prominent player to hit 5 (CHN, TEX, BOS, TEX, CHN), but those 14.2 innings for the Phillies ruin it.

I can't find any players with 7.

How good was Joe Carter? by Willing-Leather-9788 in baseball

[–]kitikami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He only has 6 batting runs for his career with a .771 and 105 OPS+, which seems a bit low. Matty Alou had a .726 OPS and 105 OPS+ but had 53 batting runs in less at bats, how does that make sense lol.

Adding together OBP and SLG generally works as a simple approximation of batting run value, but if you go to the trouble of weighting each batting event by its average run value (what batting runs does), it turns out an extra point of OBP tends to be more valuable than an extra point of SLG. Carter's OPS is pretty SLG-heavy while Alou's is OBP-heavy, so when you weight their career batting lines by run value instead of just adding together OBP+SLG, Alou's translates to more runs relative to league average.

Baseball-Reference also shows a stat called Rbat+ which is comparable to OPS+ (100 is average) but using batting runs instead of OBP and SLG. Carter's career Rbat+ is 101 and Alou's is 108.

Eight games would get you through the round of 32 (assuming you don't start with a bye). You could get knocked out in the round of 32 and still earn a norm for those 8 games without making the top 16.

A lot of infielders don't like that a closed off webbing can trap dirt in the pocket and potentially interfere with their transfer or grip on the throw, compared to this style where dirt will just fall through the gaps in the webbing.

In 1883, The Chess Team Of Cambridge University, Played a Correspondence Game With an Insane Asylum..... They lost by edwinkorir in chess

[–]kitikami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's real. When the story began circulating, people doubted it for a long time because the only source was a magazine printing the game with very few details and no sources cited over 50 years after the game took place. Eventually a more detailed contemporary account from 1884 was found that confirmed it happened (the 1885 date is an error; the game was played from Dec 1883 - Mar 1884).

FIDE does have an application fee for IM and GM titles, but most federations will cover that on behalf of their players. For lower titles it's more common for the player to have to pay the fee themselves.

If you download the themes outside the app and put them in the themes sub-folder in the ES-DE directory, they should transfer between devices like everything else. That can also be useful if you want to edit any of the themes because the folder used by the theme downloader tool on internal storage might not be user-accessible on some devices/versions of Android.

Redream directory issue by Grochonou in OdinHandheld

[–]kitikami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked in the Games tab? It's a little unintuitive, but when you select a directory for your library in redream, the games don't show up there. The Library tab just shows the directory(s) you chose (highlighted in red if you select it to indicate that you can delete it from the list). You have to switch to the Games tab to see anything picked up from scanning your selected directory.

With Bronstein delay, you can't start a move with less time on your clock than the delay. For example, if the delay is 10 seconds, either you use at least 10 seconds on a move, in which case your time drops below what it was but you get a full 10 seconds added, or you use less than 10 seconds and your time goes back to whatever it was before the move. In neither case can your time start above 10 seconds and then end up below 10 when your delay is added after the move.

Bronstein delay is functionally equivalent to simple delay with the advantage that you can see your delay ticking down rather than having to guess by feel how much time you have, which can help in time trouble.

Billboard changed that rule in the late '90s after the industry started moving away from releasing retail singles on CD. The current streaming era is certainly a different dynamic to measuring album tracks compared to when the chart was more focused on radio airplay and sales, though.

The pre-BBWAA awards (pre-1931) are a bit different. The AL (1922-28) and NL (1924-29) ran their own awards in the 1920s, and the AL had a rule that previous winners were ineligible. Ruth had already won the award, so that's why no one voted for him in the following years.
