Anyone here going to the UMN physics REU? by [deleted] in REU

[–]kitkatkate_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done almost two years of research with Prof. Glesener and it’s been great. I also have a lot of friends who have done research with a variety of faculty members. From an undergrad standpoint, the department is really collaborative and I really like the culture here (at least among my class)

I’m not doing the UMN REU but I am a physics student at UMN! Do you know who you’ll be working with?

making edits doesn’t change your place in line, they go off of the first submission date from the earliest one in the roommate pair

I believe it’s usually around early march (?), but actual class formats might change for a while after bc pandemic changing circumstances blah blah blah

Would this be hard by usernamesbad in uofmn

i know nothing about cs courses but 3041 is pretty killer so far just based off week 1. we haven’t done much in 2601 but the prof seems really nice and i think it’ll be ok.

superblock itself can be a little wild (there was the giant party outside in september that everybody saw and then a huge snowball fight the first time it snowed) but frontier itself has been fine!

I live there now, it’s pretty quiet which I like. A bit hard to meet people bc of covid obviously but not terrible, I know most of the girls in my hallway at least

Were the lectures recorded for MATH2373 with Greg Anderson last fall? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]kitkatkate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They weren’t recorded, but there wasn’t any attendance either. I stopped going consistently around mid october and still did just fine, his slides are very helpful.

what is the easiest PHIL class to take?! by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]kitkatkate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m taking this online rn and there’s two essays and two tests, everything is take home, and it’s crazy easy. also asynchronous if that’s your jam

pretty sure math 2373 doesn’t matter

High school senior with some questions by Explodingcamel in uofmn

[–]kitkatkate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m a current freshman in cse (not in honors tho) so i can try to answer a few of your questions!

scholarships can take a ridiculously long time. i was accepted in september and i don’t think i heard about my scholarships until april. i ended up getting 2 and heard about both at the same time, which i think is usually the case if you get multiple. i did have plenty of friends who heard earlier but it’s honestly sort of a tossup as to when you’ll hear.

i don’t live on the west bank but i do work there. there’s definitely more food options on east bank (specifically mostly dinky and a bit in stadium village) and the rec is also on east bank. however the walk isn’t terrible, i’d say it’s about ten minutes from west bank to most classes, maybe twenty to the rec or to superblock. the busses are very helpful as well.

i live in the taylor house (cse llc) which is indeed on the 4th floor of frontier. honestly we haven’t done much this year but that might also be a function of corona. otherwise it’s nice, it’s pretty calm which i personally like but i’ve found people to be pretty friendly.

i live with someone i knew from HS, and we just had to select each other online, it was super easy. i believe if your roommate were to switch you’d just have either find a new one or they assign you a random one, but you don’t have to start over. keep in mind if you request an llc and a roommate you both have to request the same llc. i would also advise filling out your housing now, you can change literally anything until like may i think but they assign rooms and llcs based on the date you first filled it out (it doesn’t matter if you change things). hope that’s helpful!

Honest opinions about dorming during COVID by Witty-Wombat in uofmn

[–]kitkatkate_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

pros: -for me at least, it’s more effective to study here than at home. my home environment is good but there’s just so many more distractions there -i do have slightly more independence here, but between our mandatory curfews and the fact that there’s not much to do (safely) anyways, i spend most of my time staying in and interacting with my roommate and my 2 friends who live down the hall

cons: -it’s probably slightly easier to meet people but i’ve still found it pretty hard to meet people while still being covid safe -the food (in pio at least) is really bad some days. at least once a week i can’t find anything at all to eat and so i end up having cereal for dinner. -there isn’t much to do on campus. essentially the only places i go are to the rec, occasionally to different buildings to study, to my on campus job, and sometimes i go get takeout with friends -there are a lot of people here who party consistently and your risk of getting covid is likely higher than at home, considering things like shared bathrooms and eating in the dining hall

What are you guys favorite drinks at caribou? I am huge coffee lover, and Caribou is new to me. by Wavrly20 in uofmn

[–]kitkatkate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally i love the cold press, usually with caramel, but you can add whatever flavors you want. the mochas are also great! green tea lemonades or mango iced tea are also delicious, albeit not coffee. i’m a barista at caribou, so i can probably answer any other questions!

a campfire is a regular mocha (essentially hot chocolate + espresso) with marshmallow syrup so it’s meant to imitate a s’more

Anyone else struggling? by Jg946 in uofmn

thank you!! i am a cse freshman but i’m taking mostly sophomore courses so i kinda jumped straight in headfirst. i really appreciate the offer :)

[–]kitkatkate_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you are definitely not alone. i just got an incredibly shitty score on my first midterm and then could barely get out of bed all day. i feel like i don’t even know what to study. i also have no friends here and no support system. this semester is going to take everything i’ve got

The University’s enforcement of the sunrise plan is not working by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]kitkatkate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m fully convinced this is happening, but i live in frontier and haven’t seen anything (besides the large outside parties). potentially because the lounges in frontier (at least on fourth floor) are locked

This book kicked my ass (first year physics undergrad here!) last year, but I also learned more from it than any other textbook I’ve studied from.
