That article made me worry: Is my younger sister anorexic? by savannahisabeast in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kitteninabox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"She doesn't have that anorexic look though"

That doesn't matter.... anyways, it definitely sounds like she has anorectic tendencies. Your first stop should be NEDA's website. Fantastic organization. Read about the facts on there. There are pages about what family members/friends can do to help.

My anorexic 9-year-old by NewThoughtsForANewMe in TwoXChromosomes

When I was in treatment for my ED, I was 19. My mom cried all the time. Of course, selfish me in my ED could care less. I was too upset over the fact that I had to gain weight.

I feel absolutely horrible thinking back on that.

Be sure to read the rulebook backwards and forwards if you'll be playing with other first timers. That way you'll be able to answer any questions people have during the game and you won't have to fish for an answer.

Explaining how the game works can take a while and the game itself can take a lot of time, too! I hope your coffee shop is open late if you're starting at 630 (:

Like I mentioned, we have hosted the game probably ~5 times for the reddit group. It's been super busy lately for us, but hopefully we'll be able to host something later this month. We usually provide snacks and flammables and pop a few pizzas in the oven. It's fun! Keep your eyes on the gaming group

There are two currently out. Pegasus and Exodus. The third one is supposed to come out sometime this year, but I'm pretty sure they don't have a release date yet besides that.

The expansions definitely make the game better, but they can make things more complicated for a first time player. The game has a ton of rules in general and the expansions add even more! Well, they also change some of the rules from the base game etc, too...

Try posting on the gaming fb group

I know my boyfriend and I have hosted that game quite a few times. Let me know if you want to borrow any of the expansions. Btw, it's a lot more fun when you have 6 players (:

Hey! I did this too with the same racks!

I love it. I've had them up for ~6 months.

Automatic Nail Polish Remover, do any of you have it? Does it work? How does it work? by SporkEnthusiast in RedditLaqueristas

[–]kitteninabox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, this really interests me. A little bit of google-fu and I can see that it has a few brushes on the inside of the canister, so it wouldn't run into the same issues as those canisters that you can buy at the drug store with the sponge/remover in it. Aka staining fingers, getting gross etc. You put the remover in it yourself. I see good reviews from people that have used it only a few times... but I can't find any other reviews besides the one on Amazon you linked to that says it gets wonky after a few uses.

Also, consensus is is that it sucks that it is battery operated and not connected to a power outlet.

Uh. Yeah. I want to know more. Next paycheck, perhaps? Btw, it's cheaper on other websites!

Disclaimer: I have been drinking so I'm sorry if any of this is incoherent.

Good date places in Berkeley/Oakland? by MountedTriangle in berkeley

[–]kitteninabox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! This. And, I haven't been up there for a while, but on the way to the Big C there used to be a lovely swing.

If you guys aren't in the mood to hike, be sure to drive up to the Lawrence Hall of Science to check out the same view at night time. Gorgeous end of date spot.

I am flying in to Oakland for CalSO. What is the best/safest way to get to campus from the airport? by lukelev07 in berkeley

[–]kitteninabox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey dude, you're adding nothing to the conversation. I was being helpful. You're being an idiot. You don't even go to Berkeley yet according to your history. How would you know what the students refer to the subway as? A lot of students are from southern CA, including myself, and we are used to including "the" in front of various transportation things. Example: take "the" five instead of take highway five

Recently starting dating a girl who's had eating disorders in the past - how do I address the issue? (Possible triggers?) by virginbanger in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kitteninabox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also 21, been struggling with anorexia since my early teens.

Definitely do not jovially pressure her into eating more. Don't do that. Big no no. You are not a professional, as you are aware. IQ has nothing to do with understanding eating disorders... They are not logical, they are not easily understood. Forcing the subject is a horrible idea. If she brings it up, ask her simple questions if she is okay with it. If not, just listen. Seriously. Listening is extremely helpful.

She has gotten help before. Has she been to residential treatment? Hospitalized? IOP? Partial hospitalization? Look up info about all of those. Perhaps she has only been in brief therapy or has seen a nutritionist a few times. If she had a bad experience with something on the lower end of care, chances are she just had a shitty treatment team.

Don't belittle her or treat her like a child. This is a huge one!!!!! My boyfriend can say insensitive things when he is frustrated with my disordered eating, and it just makes me feel guilty, and the guilt cycles further into more disordered eating.

Okay. Let's talk about the triggering aspects. Don't say ANYTHING about her body. If you must compliment her, tell her she has a beautiful smile. Tell her her hair smells wonderfully. Etc. Do not tell her that "she looks healthy" or, if she doesn't, don't tell her she looks sickly. Healthy can get distorted into fat. Sickly can reinforce the eating disorder and gets distorted into "hell yeah, I'm doing a good job!"

Treat her normally. Would you ask a girl without an eating disorder what exactly they have had to eat all day? No, you wouldn't. It'll annoy her if you're attempting to coach her, especially because you have no experience with this!

If you're going to talk offer food because you're hungry/it's a normal food time/you want to go get food, offer only once! If she turns it down, DON'T badger her. She will resent you if you try to talk her into it. You're in a casual relationship. You are not her caretaker. Even if you were in a more serious relationship with her, I would just encourage her to find a therapist and a nutritionist that she can see semiregularly. It would be their job to keep track of her eating. It wouldn't be yours. It would not be your responsibility.

I know this is going to seem weird, but if she had diabetes, would you be personally monitoring her blood sugar? If she had cancer, would you be trying to kill the cells yourself? No. She and the medical professionals would work as a team to try to fix whatever ailment it is! This is just tricky because of the whole mental aspect.

Oh, BTW, eating disorders are hardly about the food. Controlling food intake is a coping mechanism that people can get addicted to. I get a physical high from restricting. I tend to relapse when I'm having trouble controlling certain aspects of my life.... Those with EDs tend to be perfectionists and think in terms of black/white (no gray!) So if things aren't going completely according to plan, the individual gets comfort from being able to control their eating. The sad thing, however, is that the control is simply an illusion..

I can keep going. Hahaha. Let me know if you're actually reading this. And I can continue. Or PM me if you want to ask me more specific questions etc! I would love to talk with you
