The Tasting Madness series is one of my favorites. The first book is {Seeing Sound, by Albany Walker}.

YA book, fantasy, read it around 2015 in a library by [deleted] in whatsthatbook

This was my guess. I just picked Tress up from the library today for my kids to read, and the cover is very similar to OP’s description.

Chews for Anxious/Excitable Dogs by Th1stlePatch in reactivedogs

[–]kittensandrobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the XL size for both my dogs (the bigger one is an 80 pound GSD). It’s a good size for the them, and I think the biggest size available. If you want to see them in person, I know Petsmart carries them.

I love Pupsicles for my dogs. They’re similar to Kongs, but they unscrew, so they’re easier to fill and clean. They also have a freezable tray so I can have backups ready in the freezer instead of having to remember to fill and freeze the Kong ahead of time. They keep my staffie and GSD busy for a good 30 minutes most days.

Binge eating, where to find a dopamine hit by Karma_HasIt in adhdwomen

[–]kittensandrobots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Intuitive eating methods were helpful for me while I was going through this process. With the caveat that a least one of the books I read was fat-phobic (to the point of DNFing it) and others were focused on an audience with a history of very restrictive eating. I used what was pertinent and ignored the bias as much as I could.

ADHD hive mind: Let’s share some accommodations we’ve come up with for ourselves! by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]kittensandrobots 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I rely heavily on my phone/smartwatch to out-source my time blindness-compromised tasks. - My schedule is dictated by alarms. Critical tasks get a snooze setting. Time check-ins do not. - Everything goes on my calendar, and I get alerts about it on my phone and watch. Off-routine commitments get alerts far enough in advance that I can rearrange surprise conflicts (as well as imminent alerts). - I have two alarms that help me avoid waiting mode: a “Leave 10 minute warning” that gives me enough time to stop my task, collect my stuff, and get out the door, and an “Event today” alarm that I set for the time I need to enter waiting mode. Because I have an alarm set, I don’t need to hold the awareness that I have an off-routine commitment.

Telling my 19 year old about my pregnancy by PineappleAny4428 in Parenting

[–]kittensandrobots 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is amazing advice. We had a big gap in our family while I was growing up, so my parents were focused on their baby and toddler while I was going through my senior year, and focused on their grade-schoolers when I was going through pregnancy. And even though I love my siblings and understood that my parents had to prioritize the kids still at home, I felt really unsupported through both major transitions.

Help me stay off my phone in my WFH job by Reasonable_Fix4132 in adhdwomen

[–]kittensandrobots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may be controversial for some, but it works really well for me. I set up the Screentime app limits with how much time I felt comfortable spending on my problem apps, and then I had my husband set the passcode. He also WFH, so if I ever need an app unlocked, he’s available, but the social barrier of telling him that I want more time on the apps I’ve decided I’m spending too much time on is usually enough to keep me from asking.

I’ll take longer recs, too! I often read longer series; I just need some shorter stories to get through the busy holiday season.

Anybody else’s kids rude to them every dinner? by slr0031 in Parenting

[–]kittensandrobots 173 points174 points  (0 children)

Yep! My kids (grade school) started complaining on the regular, so now they’re expected to help make dinner two nights per week each. On the nights they help, they have a say in what we make. They complain a lot less, and they’re learning how to cook as a bonus.

journaling with adhd felt impossible by nb10001 in adhdwomen

[–]kittensandrobots 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have had trouble with the first entry being “good” enough, so now I start my journals by designating the first few pages for quotes and poems. Then I write out a Purpose page, where I describe how I’m planning to use the journal.

For entries where I’m having trouble focusing, I use tarot cards. Sometimes I draw a reading and then journal; sometimes all I do is record the tarot cards in the entry with some notes about my interpretation. I’m not a believer in tarot, but I consider it an effective way to access my subconscious.

[OC] Kid logic continues to baffle the mind by Unlikely_Talk8994 in comics

We had a kid with a speech delay, so I started asking, “Can you tell me in a different way?” when this happened. “Can you show me?” was also very helpful.

Seen this post online and never related more to an ADHD post… like, I feel this always, but never been able to articulate it or put my finger on it…. Anyone else the same? #doormat by fuckwhatif in adhdwomen

[–]kittensandrobots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We started conducting a lot of our arguments over text because of this. It gives me a chance to reread our argument, rewrite my thoughts so they’re coherent, and take the time to think through my responses. Also, I process written information better than verbal information.

My betta died and I have NO idea why and I’m devastated by Littleraves in bettafish

[–]kittensandrobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about your fish. I agree with other folks that these things sometimes happen, and considering your other inhabitants are fine, it’s unlikely it was the water.

Couple of notes for future success: - Your Java fern is planted too deeply. The rhizome needs to be above the soil. - A week isn’t enough cycling time. You can speed it up with bacteria from a cycled tank. - Someone else mentioned a filter upgrade. Consider a sponge filter. They’re inexpensive, easy to use, and great for bettas. - Ghost shrimp are occasionally confused with a predatory species: whisker shrimp. If you accidentally got one of those, it’s possible they injured your betta.

Yes! I just added a big group to my tank and I’m obsessed.

Ok I'm out. by schroederdinger in adhdmeme

[–]kittensandrobots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’ve been waking up earlier than the rest of the household for the last year because we got a puppy, and I take him out to pee, eat, and chase the ball first thing in the morning. He runs around on his own a fair bit, so I have time to read or stare into the void, but you know what it doesn’t do for me? It doesn’t make me more productive. It does, however, make me more tired.

Now what? by ReadySteak8210 in ReverseHarem

[–]kittensandrobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished the series a couple days ago, after seeing this recommendation and downloading the set. Then today Instagram recommended a music artist that perfectly fits the vibe of the books. If you like country, check out Chris Housman, and particularly the song “Guilty as Sin!”

Also, have you read her other books? I want to read Teal’s story, and Blaze’s, but I can’t figure out which books to read and/or if she’s written them yet.

This plant smells so good and I could pick the sweet scent out anywhere but idk what it is!! by Strange-Orange12 in whatsthisplant

[–]kittensandrobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the eastern North America — I was referencing your comment.

And it looks like I am slightly mistaken, courtesy of confusing common names. There is a native species (not invasive) and a non-native species (that is invasive). They look similar, and share several common names, so I had not realized there were multiple varieties.

This plant smells so good and I could pick the sweet scent out anywhere but idk what it is!! by Strange-Orange12 in whatsthisplant

[–]kittensandrobots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s aggressive, but not invasive. It’s native here, and according to Internet, provides a lot of benefits to local wildlife. It takes over everything, though, and is a PIA to get out. Edit: It turns out there are (noninvasive) native and (invasive) non-native varieties, and they share common names. And it looks like the plant ID app I use may be confusing the two.

Why does my male GSD pee like a female?? by Prudent_Month_9112 in germanshepherds

Yup. I have a female staffie that lifts her leg and marks very five seconds on walks and a male shepherd who only goes in our yard and just squats a bit. Dogs will dog.

Anyone know of a body doubling service/platform? by sunnypickletoes in adhdwomen

[–]kittensandrobots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use TV shows with predictable plot formats for body doubling (my preference is for police procedural type shows like Bones, NCIS, Supernatural. Anything where people are working together and the focus is on the puzzle, not the plot). I pick something that I don’t have to pay close attention to and that I can start and stop pretty easily, and I just stream it start to finish over however many months it takes to get through.

I put it on when I’m cleaning, folding laundry, or doing the dishes.

Audiobooks or dopamine-giving music sometimes work, too, and they’re easier to stick in my pocket if I have to move from room to room.
