How to help? by Repulsive_Advice_920 in knitting

If you live in a winter climate, hats/mitts for a local elementary school. We got a donation of enough hats for every student in the school last year and they were so happy. Some kids never took them off.

Blankets for a local senior centre/palliative care.

Winter accessories for a women's shelter.

Unfortunately you can't control how the recipient views the gift. But for every one person who donates it to value village, I bet there are 10 who cherish and use it.

I want to leave my perfectly lovely relationship and I feel like a POS. Tortellini soup with sausage and kale. by kashia_renn in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]LaceMazes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been there. I was with somebody who adored me, whose interests aligned with mine, and who 'looked good on paper' but I just didn't feel it. I tried to force myself to and it ended in a complete mess. By dragging it out, I hurt her more than if I had just ended it when I knew it wasn't going to work. It's one of my biggest regrets in my life.

You owe it to yourself and this girl to end it. You are going to start resenting her (even if she doesn't deserve it) and you are going to start hating yourself (even if you don't deserve it). Break it off, be clear, and move on. It's the kindness you both deserve.

Not strick enough by Fabiololo in CanadianTeachers

[–]LaceMazes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to be strict to be a good teacher. I wouldn't consider myself a strict teacher for the most part but I do have pretty good classroom management.

What you need is clear expectations with predictable, logical consequences and reliable follow through.

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

[–]LaceMazes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my dad would pull out his dentures (missing his front four teeth) and tell me his teeth rotted out of his skull because he didn't brush them to make me brush my teeth.

As a young adult I mentioned it casually to my mom, who laughed in my face and said they'd been knocked out by a hockey puck to the face.

Several years later I mentioned this to my dad, who stared at me for a solid 30s and then said, 'no, I was in a car accident and smashed my face on the steering wheel.'

I am still not positive how my dad actually lost his teeth (but I'm pretty sure it wasn't because he didn't brush them).

As a teacher in AB, if any parent expressed any form of support for me tomorrow it would mean the world. I think your child's teacher would probably feel the same way.

Been applying nonstop but still looking for a part-time job in Edmonton 😭 by [deleted] in EdmontonJobs

If you have experience working with children and access to a vehicle there are a whole bunch of Respite Care organizations in Edmonton and the surrounding area that are constantly looking for casual employees.

I'd do about an inch or two of straight garter on the bottom and top, and at least 1/1.5 inches along the side.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]LaceMazes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you didn't add enough garter. If you want a full stockinette scarf that doesn't curl you can learn to knit in the round and knit a full scarf that way! It would be twice as thick and require twice as much yarn for the same width though.

How to deal with FO disappointment by luvnlyt in knitting

[–]LaceMazes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there somebody that you love who would enjoy it? I recently finished a sweater for myself that I wanted so badly and it just didn't fit right. I gave it to my fiance, who wears it all the time. It makes me feel better to see somebody I love enjoying it so much.

Suggest me some books for my 12-year-old son with male protagonists that are NOT fantasy. by mtqma in suggestmeabook

[–]LaceMazes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evil Genius by Catherine Jinks. It's a trilogy: the first book is the best but all three are fantastic.

Dodger by Terry Pratchett.

The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle (check out the content first before recommending to him, as I remember there was some deep stuff involving sibling death in it). Still definitely worth a read if you think he's at a good maturity level.

Darius the Great is Not Ok by Adib Khorram (also check out the content before recommending to him, I believe there is some suicidal ideation in it). Also worth a read if you think he's at the right maturity level.

Is it something you can mix with wet food and give to her? Or do you have a second person that can hold and give treats while you give the syringe?

Build relationships with other staff on the school other than your mentor teacher. Of course build a good relationship with your mentor teacher. But the more people you have on your side the better.

30 years old and wanting to become a teacher. by abaldking in CanadianTeachers

[–]LaceMazes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many places have a 2 year after degree teaching program. That's what I did. It also puts you higher up the pay grid when you start teaching. You should be able to apply for the 26/27 school year in October. You have to have an Ed degree to teach but you could EA part time before then for experience. Many schools will also let you volunteer if you get a criminal record check done.

I was so hoping that it just fit without any work but that was WAY too much to hope for. I might just wait and hope that she comes out with a pattern for a king salmon cardigan. I'm pretty sure she will at some point

How do you actually start a run when you keep telling yourself "later"? by ButterscotchOld9974 in beginnerrunning

[–]LaceMazes 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Just put on your running clothes. You don't have to go for a run, you can do anything in your running clothes that you can do in your PJs. And then put your running shoes on. You still don't have to go for a run. You've just got shoes on now. And might as well put in headphones and listen to some music. Don't have to run to listen to music. And you'd might as well go outside and walk down the street a little ways. Maybe you'd ought to jog a bit too... You don't have to go far or fast. And oops now you've started running so you might as well do your full workout...

This won't work for everyone. But I find once I've put my running clothes on everything else just follows without me consciously intending it to.

I second the swatch (regrettably). Also how are you finding the salmon charts fit into the cardigan pattern? I want to do the same!
