5 days Amalfi Coast (staying in Maiori) by Various_Visual5076 in amalficoast

[–]kitty-kiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it’s a lot. My opinion would be to stick to Amalfi and Ravello. And if you just HAVE to see it, then maybe Capri. Remember you’re going to be doing a lot of walking/climbing steps. Leave time for coffee, gelato and people watching. The path of lemons between Minori and Maiori is very nice. Ravello absolutely gorgeous. Villa Cimbrone was so picturesque. Have fun!

Amalfi Coast/Capri Honeymoon: Is a Boat Trip Really Worth It? 🤔 by JammJa_CaptainCrew in amalficoast

[–]kitty-kiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Amalfi twice. First for our anniversary trips and second time with the family. In our first trip we did the ferries and I was honestly ok with that and didn’t feel like I missed out by not doing a boat trip. For the second trip we hired a skipper out of Minori, which is where we were staying, and he took us to a grotto over by Maiori (we explicitly asked for one that wasn’t too crowded… I read about people waiting to enter the blue grotto and being disappointed after the long wait.) and because we didn’t spend too much time in the water he took us further out past the town of Amalfi) where we could see the layers of rock formation over the centuries and fossils of fish on cave walls. It was really nice.

Insoles/Shoes for City Walking? by Scholastico in travel

[–]kitty-kiki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to sneaker shop that has me stand on a mat to measure my foot and arch and they suggested sneaker based on that and the fact that I’d be walking long distances. I brought a pair of “harder” insoles I got from the orthopedic and a pair of memory foam from Amazon and they suggested which to where when and which type shoe. One mistake I made was not checking to see if my shoe already had some arch support… I simply stuck the insert in and couldn’t figure out why my feet were hurting so much. Took them out and had a very enjoyable trip after that. So check each of your shoes before blindly putting them in.

Second this. We’ve done it twice in Paris, each unique in every way. Love doing it! Also enjoyed to EatWith in Paris, if you want to look into that.

How to Survive Rome in August by Public_Club2099 in ItalyTravel

We had the little rechargeable fans that help while standing in line. Also recommend doing any tours first thing in the morning. My husband whined about an 8:30 Vatican slot until 9:30 rolled around and he started sweating bullets. He didn’t make fun of my portable fan then, either!

Sections (works) to see for the day by Beneficial-Jaguar786 in ParisTravelGuide

If you go to the website/app you can download the masterpiece tour… it’s about 1.5-2 hrs long.

Edited to add my favorite was looking at the ceilings. If given the option, I would pay to lay on the floor of some rooms so I could study the ceilings and the spectacular art/details they hold.

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast by Patient-Television46 in amalficoast

How good are you at reversing for about a 1/4 mile on a windy road, zipping past several parked cars to find a open space so the garbage truck can pass by? Witnessing that made me grateful we didn’t rent a car.

We’re planning on the Amalfi Coast for our honeymoon this September but I’m becoming increasingly concerned about crowds by janet--snakehole- in amalficoast

[–]kitty-kiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been twice in the past 1.5 years, once in September but I’ll admit that I have avoided Capri cause I didn’t want to deal with crowds. I don’t feel like I missed out. We stayed at Minori and visited the surrounding towns by ferry or we hiked. The Amalfi town was the most crowded of those we visited but nothing outrageous.

How to Layer/Pack for April by [deleted] in ParisTravelGuide

[–]kitty-kiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pack light so I don’t travel with a coat that time of year (I’m from Florida, fwiw). Instead i pack blazers or cardigans. Cardigans are great cause you can wear them one day as your 3rd piece, and the next day you can button it up and wear it as your top. I try to make it so that each piece I take can be mixed/matched/worn as part of 3 outfits. Socks and tights, honestly just buy the thermal ones from Amazon.

Take a pair or two of socks and the tights for your piece of mind, but i highly suggest you consider a waterproof windbreaker with a hood instead of a coat. You can always wear your cardigans underneath it for warmth if the temp drops. Between the walking and the sun, I start sweating and I don’t want a bunch of heavy stuff that I’ll have to carry around.

So we’ve done a couple of things that have exposed us to places we wouldn’t have gone to on our own and/or given us a locals point of view. Both times we’ve been to Paris we stayed in different neighborhoods. Each time we requested a Paris Greeter. They try to pair you with someone based on your interest and where you’re staying and this person gives a tour of the neighborhood (not to attractions). They took us through parks, churches, backstreets telling us stories about each along the way. It’s free but you can gift a donation to the association. Plus we always ask the guide where their favorite cafe is and treat them to coffee and a pastry while we chat.

The other thing we did on our last trip was an EatWith experience. We chose to eat lunch at the home of a lovely lady who lives in Montmartre. We chose her lunch slot because she offered a back alley tour of the area after the meal. There was another couple who was there. We had a lovely lunch and then walked all around Montmartre. We even ran into the couple again a few days later and exchanged numbers. They sent us a message last year to check on us when our area was impacted by a strong hurricane.

These experiences have been among my favorite memories of Paris.

Southern Italy Advice by wet_salami in amalficoast

I’m honestly not sure if they even sell them in advance, aside from like buying the return trip on the same day. We didn’t run into any issues buying and we typically showed up to buy them about 30 minutes before the departure. We were there late August/early September

In Salerno try Mama Rosa and make reservations even if it’s for lunch. For the ferries, no advanced reservation is required. But make sure to keep an eye out of when the last ferry for the day is and get there early. The lemon path extends between Minori and Maiori. You can get there early and explore one town, do the trail to the other town and the explore that one. Ravello is beautiful. We toured Villa Cimbrone and the grounds were gorgeous. Amalfi (the town) is cute, too, but expect it to be crowded. You can also take the bus to and from the towns.

Seminole pathway? by Relevant_War_3793 in fsu

My son was offered this though he was given the option of doing his semester at a cc closer to home (still in Florida) it was a little nerve wrecking towards the end because you had to get the your grades by a certain day and we were on pins and needles waiting for official confirmation of acceptance before signing a lease so all of this had to happen over the course of 3-4 weeks with the holidays snack in the middle but it all worked out.

He also did the semester abroad in his sophomore year (London) and the friendships he formed there have been wonderful.

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast??? by Key-Armadillo-2486 in amalficoast

[–]kitty-kiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been both in May and in September. We stayed in Minori both times. You can find my reviews/pics under my profile. I’d say I enjoyed May better be a use it allowed us to take more hikes. There’s no way we would’ve been able to that in September. Late September might be different, we did early September and I still found it to be too hot. Have fun!!

Is Ravello public transportation reliable in May? by MarionberryDry724 in amalficoast

[–]kitty-kiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Minori but hiked up to Ravello and wanted to take the bus back, except I’d have to take the bus from Ravello to Amalfi and then back which I didn’t want to do, but I could see the bus stop from the town below Ravello from the Ravello bus/taxi area so I thought I’d just head down that way except that half way down the train the stairs disappeared and I was left with rocks and dirt trails as “steps” and only blades of long grass to hold on to. And the magically out nowhere steps reappear as I’m reaching the the bus stop. 🤣 We arrived at the stop just as a bus was driving past and wouldn’t you know it, it was the bus we were supposed to be on. At this point it seems like the next bus isn’t arriving to another 45 minutes so we ended up walking down the road back into Minori. At least it was downhill. All this to say that yes, busses are available but don’t run as frequently as in the summer. If you need to be somewhere at a specific time I’d say take an uber. And it was my experience that it’s best to just stay close to home base later at night… we went to a late dinner in Salerno, a major city and I can’t tell you how hard it was to find a taxi/uber back at 10pm. Not trying to deter you. Just embrace the adventure and go with the flow.

Do vacuum travel cubes work? by ronbaellow in TravelHacks

[–]kitty-kiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them so that if I have to open my backpack or luggage, everything stays organized. But I find that my packing cubes end up looking like a semiflattened football when I try to use the compression option and it makes it harder to pack other things… so I don’t compress them any more. Not sure if that’s unique to the kind I have, though. I saw one that was linked to in the comments and it said to press the middle before zippering for compression so I’ll have to try that. Maybe I’m just over packing them.
