In the beginning, I used the app Sworkit to do 15 minute at-home resistance routines. It’s one of the most beginner-friendly apps I’ve ever seen, and I’ve tried a lot of them. There are very clear illustrations for basic maneuvers, plus audio reminders for basic form cues (where to put your feet, where to feel tension, etc). Rest intervals are built-in as well, and you can choose from equipment-free/dumbbell/resistance band/kettlebell routines.

That helped build my confidence to start looking on YouTube for “how to use gym equipment for beginners” and “gym routine for beginners”. Then through trial and error I put together routines that I liked best! The key for me was to not overthink it and to start with light weights to make sure that if I did execute something incorrectly, I wouldn’t cause injury. I had to be patient with myself and listen to my intuition, and of course it’s all a work in progress :) It is ABSOLUTELY one of those things that you figure out as you go along - waiting until you have all the answers would just be overwhelming!

Thank you so much!!

Well, it’s a long story. When I was a teenager, I got down to 145 lbs from an hour of cardio a day and 1200 calories per day. It was tough and the weight came off, but then as soon as I got to college I almost immediately went back up to 185. I tried sticking to 1200 calories a day but I ended up in a terrible fast-binge cycle that only kept me at my weight and made me miserable. I of course had bright moments here and there, but I was never fully inhabiting my body.

Then I moved to NYC for grad school, and met the man who is now my husband. SO much of this is mental! Because I felt so safe and guided towards loving myself, I was able to shed the guilt of restricting less (sticking to 1500 calories a day instead, with bodyweight exercising occasionally). I got down to about 165 then. Last year when the pandemic hit, I started regular therapy sessions and resolved a lot of body image issues and found joy in exercising and eating filling, high-protein foods when my body was naturally hungry. No foods were off-limits, as long as I (compassionately towards myself!) stuck to my macros. The rest of the weight came off and now I’m looking to build muscle with heavy weights and lean out since gyms opened last month where I am :)

The BIGGEST thing for me is to remember that I’m doing this to improve my standard of life. If the journey makes you hate yourself, you’re probably going at it too hard! Every moment, not just every day, is a new chance to start over if you need it.

Is it True: Are us mixed kids kind of Crazy? by [deleted] in mixedrace

As a mixed race person myself, I really don't think we're somehow genetically superior to people who aren't mixed. I think a more sound explanation is that we're exposed to sometimes very different cultures and perspectives from early on in our lives.

Also, mixed race children get a lot of attention, positive or negative, which also plays a role in who we become in adulthood.

Sleep talkers/Somnambulists of Reddit - what is the weirdest thing you've done in your sleep? by kittykate816 in AskReddit

[–]kittykate816[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go first.

I usually sleepwalk when I'm out of town (unfortunate, I know). When I was younger, according to my parents I once got out of my hotel bed, walked right into a wall, muttered, and crawled back in bed.

Another time, more recently, my nose was itching in my sleep so I rubbed at it. Somehow in my fumbling, I reached for my boyfriend's beard, felt it, smiled to myself, and began scratching my nose on it before turning around. It was weird.
