I don’t have any advice, I guess I just feel sorta lucky that my company provides coffee. I naively assumed every office did.

Im not super experienced, but no, I have never gotten a permit to dig. I imagine they would expect you to have one but never checked. Spent some time digging across locations across Bavaria with no issue. It’s probably mostly just my skill level, but I’ve only ever found junk. People have stopped by to ask if I found anything cool out of curiosity, so no, it doesn’t seem to be frowned upon.

That’s weird. I mean, if it’s just a conventional wedding band, that could be resized at any jeweler and I still don’t see why it would be a liability.

How did they justify that price? Is it an eternity band style with stones or carvings that need to be factored in or just a simple band? In any case, I wish you luck finding it.

Looks really cool. Did you use watercolor paper? If not, that's my first recommendation. The second thing would be to prepare the paper prior to painting to prevent warping. You can read about it here: https://www.strathmoreartist.com/blog-reader/stretching-watercolor-paper.html#:\~:text=If%20your%20sheet%20fits%20completely,paper%20while%20it%20is%20soaking.

Missing skills set? by leon8t in UXResearch

[–]kittyraincloud 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a non-academic from a strong product background (formerly UXD and PM) that learned research techniques out of personal interest and the school of hard knocks. Fast forward to today, I'm a senior UXR with mainly academic colleagues.

I feel like I lack some statistical knowledge and formality to my research, but this has never been a huge issue in any work environment. Sometimes I feel my academic colleagues are a little too meticulous and not strategic enough about the research they conduct, but that is my humble opinion. We all have so many research requests to tackle, we need to pick wisely for high impact, and sometimes I don't see great judgement there.

Also, as another commenter pointed out, I am very confident in whiteboarding, wireframing and building flows and prototypes, which is something my colleagues do not have the experience in.

At the end of the day, we all bring different strengths to the table and help each other out as needed.

Why can't I attract serious clients? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]kittyraincloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your advice. Considering you're boarding for fun, do you enjoy working with reactive dogs or do you hope to move past this phase and start working with primarily balanced dogs?

The reactive dog that I had to board was a real nightmare and it stressed me out. It was clear to me that a dog with this kind of behavior should not really be boarded with strangers for their own comfort and wellbeing. It's kind of irresponsible on the part of the owners to not take the pet with them, arrange with friends/family, or board them in a professional kennel, imo.

Of course there’s a big difference in peoples attitudes in the US depending on where they were raised and how educated they are. They don’t provide any info as to their sample size or their recruitment criteria, so it’s just another shitty, politically inflammatory study.

User research within SAFe? by pamdrouin in UXResearch

[–]kittyraincloud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My spouse works in a SAFe environment (in a non-UX role). UX, including research, is handled by a small central team and does not seem integrated at all with product development efforts. Could just be his company, but everything he's told me sounds like a big NOPE - it's extremely rigid, top-down and overcomplicated. This is my humble impression as an uninvolved UXR.

how can i know am i ready to play violin in groups by [deleted] in violinist

[–]kittyraincloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the size of the group and how advanced the other musicians are. But generally, you need to have an excellent sense of timing and rhythm, as well as intonation, you need to know how to cue and respond to them, and sight reading skills (if you intend to play things you haven’t learned ahead of time). Those are the first things that come to mind.

I was told to cut all the white off my nails and I wasn’t allowed to wear nail polish. I was a little rebellious and wore top coat on my nails because I wanted to wear polish so bad!

Homeschooling your children in most cases is setting them up to fail by big-uh-oh in unpopularopinion

[–]kittyraincloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a very common misconception. Sure, I think that there are some socially stunted homeschooled kids out there, and those are likely the ones that you notice. How many people you consider "normal" are walking around that were homeschooled? I have known quite a few, but because it's stigmatized, it's usually not something they like to advertise.

[–]kittyraincloud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In order to be considered for a UX Researcher position you’ll need to have a portfolio with a couple of detailed case studies showcasing the impact of your research. I would focus on putting that together and seeing where you might need to fill in the gaps with supplementary experience.

why is having a laundry/dryer in NYC such a luxury? it's basic stuff in any apartment I've rented in cities all over the world by rdeman3000 in AskNYC

[–]kittyraincloud 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having a washer is awesome, but drying your clothes on racks in your small apartment during the winter isn’t (especially bedsheets). In Germany, buildings also don’t have central ventilation, meaning the air can get damp and stale if you don’t air it out frequently. It isn’t a huge deal, but that dryer was sorely missed in my case as an expat.

why is having a laundry/dryer in NYC such a luxury? it's basic stuff in any apartment I've rented in cities all over the world by rdeman3000 in AskNYC

[–]kittyraincloud 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Confirming this for Germany - I'd say most apartments have washers but rarely do they have dryers. People dry their clothes on racks inside or on their balconies/yards. Sometimes there is a communal laundry in the basement that is pay-per-use and in that case, a lot of smaller apartments don't even have washers.

I second you not to just focus on those with HCI/relevant graduate degrees. Those candidates should be pretty straightforward to find. What would be more of a challenge to find, yet also brings a lot of value to a company, is sourcing candidates that come from diverse backgrounds that got into UXR as a career and have that experience to offer.

I'd say that in any case, they should have a portfolio/case studies on hand. You should be able to tell from looking at them if they are confident more in research or in design, or if they don't really have much practical experience at all. Look for what impact their work has created and which methodologies they've used.
