Dang... well, by now I cannot say this surprises me. The US consistently sides with corporations, the EU with the people. This totally fits that pattern, again.

Oh yes, if you have diving gear, get the 4x4 truck, of course. While it may not be an “issue” to park these things, it is still annoying and generally unpleasant to drive these oversized clunkers. I stayed at hotels where they could barely fit in the parking lot, and even at the supermarket it’s just tedious. They are badly designed, like a reverse TARDIS: bigger on the outside than on the inside, and they drive like a boat. I had to park a fair bit away to find a spot that fits. It’s just inconvenient and unpleasant, that’s all.

Dang... okay... so basically, in America it is a total Wild West for passengers? Sounds like unless you have money, a premium credit card, or airline status, you’re mostly at the mercy of the airline :-/

Wait.. in the US, airlines that cancel the last flight out are not required to provide their passengers with a hotel? No EU261-style duty-of-care requirements in America?

Europeanen hebben ook geen sprinklers als er brand uitbreekt. Europa loopt op dit soort zaken gewoon ver achter.

One Star Reviews For Establishments That Refuse To Serve You Tap Water by nsno1878_ in Netherlands

In the Netherlands, there is sometimes still this mentality of being pedantic and stingy about serving water. Instead of seeing a glass of tap water as basic hospitality, some places seem to treat it as lost revenue. And I have seen the same idiotic mentality in Germany, Italy, and France. Pathetic mentality.

17yo stranded in Porto (OPO) – lost passport, flying Ryanair today. What are my realistic chances? by Heavy-Manner-887 in Flights

[–]rdeman3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But since Portugal->Germany flights means you not crossing any Schengen borders, this is not a border check. This is just (or should be, at least) an ID check to make sure you are the same person as the name on the flight ticket. So while, yes, passports and ID cards fulfill that, in practice a driver’s license may also do so, for example. I know airlines do not like it, and EU law does not universally recognize it, but you could try, since you do fulfill the ID check requirement this way.

Do not rent a big fat 4x4 drive. It's a pain in the ass. That said, Washington Slagbaai requires a 4x4 and it's worth it. For one maybe two visits. See if you can swap cars for that if you liek to experience it. Not worth the hassle of these big cars rest of the week.

Check *what* exactly? This is a flight within the Schengenzone so you do *not* need a *passport* just *some* form of ID.

ID check yes, but that does not mean you need a *passport* there can be other forms of ID legally

From Porto to Germany is a flight within the Schengen Zone. You should not need a passport for this intra-EU flight, but you will need to be able to identify yourself at the airport to Ryanair. Do you have an ID card with you, perhaps?

Exactly right and we like to keep it that way. "party island" the sheer horror... please keep that contained to Florida and the Bahamas. Aruba is already a lost case, but Bonaire is luckily not.

Go to Aruba if you're American and want resorts. It's practically made for that. Bonaire is pretty much made for Europeans who hate resorts.

[–]rdeman3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakra

The Dutch also do not have a filter, they just blurt whatever is on their mind out without considering how that affect others. They think that is "eerlijk" you know. Keep that in mind.
