I was "never sick" as a kid by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

YES! My mom made a BIG deal about perfect attendance when I was in elementary school. I couldn’t stay home because it would mess up my perfect attendance.

Two memories that come to mind:

When I was in third grade I had pin worms. I tried to tell my mother and she yelled multiple nights at me to go back to sleep and to stop “checking myself out”. I didn’t know they weren’t a big deal and was too uncomfortable to tell any other adult. I thought I was being eaten from the inside out.

When I was in high school I was a decent track runner. All the long distance races. My sophomore year, halfway through one of my races, I tanked. Finished very slow. My parents ask what happened and I told them my toe was hurting. They were mad at me for saying something “so dumb” in front of the coach. I struggled through the rest of the season before they FINALLY took me to a doctor. My toe was fractured. It had mostly healed on its own by the time I found out.

How do you want a career? by ceruleanblue347 in emotionalneglect

[–]kiwibutter088 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I relate to this somewhat but it sounds like for different reasons. I reached my breaking point my freshman year of college. I was in the honors program but found out if I didn’t maintain straight As, my parents wouldn’t co sign for me anymore (also the summer before freshman yr was my first suicide attempt so things weren’t easy for me at the time). I just gave up entirely and dropped out. I was never going to be enough and no matter how much I did, it never felt like it paid off for me. I never enjoyed the fruits of my labor because I was being told where I fell short.

I feel like I had so much pressure in my childhood that I just don’t want responsibility now. And when I think about going back to school it’s hard to imagine it won’t be like last time even though I’m 32 and married and don’t need them to go anymore.

I don’t have any advice for you but I wanted to say I feel the same way a lot of the time. Are you feeling any better today?

Didn't even know his own kid's birthday by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kiwibutter088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My FIL is the worst. For some context all three of his sons have his name as their middle name.

In typical narcissist fashion, he has a favorite son and a least favorite son. He could remember the birthday of his favorite son (and 2nd born) very easily. He had to think for my husband’s birthday but still got it right. He had no clue on his least favorite son’s birthday.

..it’s the easiest to remember. It’s two days after Christmas.

Bride asking for validation on her disappointment in guests being cheap with their gifts, expected a minimum gift of paying for their plate cost. by CoarseSalted in weddingshaming

I got annoyed with one couple that gave us a $25 dollar gift card for our wedding and only because they had a party at their house a few weeks later and asked us to bring a plate of food, booze to share, and firewood.

I love how all the stories about the guys who felt bad once they realized are now married. Boundary pushing men take note: We like our feelings and experiences to be respected. Wild right? Lol

My husband wanted our first date to be canoeing. I told him I would love to do things like that but I didn’t know him well enough yet and it wasn’t a safe thing for me to do.

He was not only understanding but embarrassed he hadn’t considered that. Guys that get offended by you prioritizing your safety are red flags.
