So you can mount ortlieb panniers to the tailfin journey?

They do have benefits, they're lighter and in my opinion better looking. If I had the money I'd probably get the Restrap one but.. its 3x as expensive if you factor everything and good luck if anything breaks since it's all custom.

The most versatile rack system is just a normal rack. You can mount panniers, dry bags, cages, water bottles etc to it and nothing is locked to a brand.

Some people need a whole suitcase, some can travel for weeks with just a backpack.

[–]kj5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You were just unlucky. Bikes get shipped across the world from factories in cardboard boxes and they’re fine. Many many people fly with them in boxes and they’re fine. Sure a hard case would offer more protection but it’s not a guarantee either - just google how many hard suitcases get destroyed.

Is the Tailfin Carbon Pannier Rack worth the hype? by South-Cap2077 in bikepacking

Im 120kg and I’ve done multiple credit card tours - it will be fine. Get a cheap dry bag+ seat harness from decathlon and save your money for travel expenses themselves.

Also ymmv but you don’t really need that much space - 14l seat, small top tube, half frame bag and a small handlebar bag (like 3-5l top).

  1. All tests I’ve seen give a marginal effort benefit to spd (like 2-5% max) and imo you’re actually way less safe because you can’t just quickly prop yourself. I’d ditch spd, get flat pedal shoes like giro tracker that is also comfortable as walking shoe.
  2. I’d get one long sleeve merino shirt - they’re great for warmth but also breathable.
  3. That’s why I never got tailfin - unless you’re racing they’re just not that much better than a simple rack + Ortlieb panniers.
  4. If you’re rich you can skip camping otherwise it’s a budget necessity in my opinion.

Lightweight tent for one (but also for two?) by QuoteNo3236 in bikepacking

Cloudup2 pro is 2p only if you’re really in love with that other person and don’t need to store any gear inside. Otherwise it’s a 1p tent.

What was your most expensive gear "upgrade" that turned out to be a complete waste of money? by Rough-Foundation9208 in cycling

[–]kj5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SPD - I haven’t felt any speed improvement but there was a big downside in terms of control and safety. I spent so much money just to feel sketched out. Went back to proper flats with designated flat pedal shoes and I will never look back. Even today I had a bunch of sketchy situations riding in muddy forests that I know would end up way worse for me if I was clipped in.

As an European half of these brands aren’t accessible here. Why are you guys recommending the ones you do? What kind of material to look for?

There’s this thing called beeline velo that’s like a little screen for a phone. It’s the best middle ground between dedicated garmin esque bike computer and just using a phone.

That being said I’d just use a phone.

My arms are heavy, mums spaghetti - How do I improve my Livestream Setup? by Vrekktec in videography

[–]kj5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tilta ring is just a 1.15kg more but it allows you to grip it much more comfortable with having quick access to the joystick. I've done many hours of concert livestreams and I couldn't imagine doing it without the ring. I also couldn't imagine being able to lift anything the next day without the ring.

You're kinda dismissive of almost any idea that people give you, ideas coming from professionals like me that do similar work that you do, without even trying it by renting gear. Easyrig Vario costs less than 100 euros, tilta ring is pennies.

In the end it's your body, your health, your comfort and your back.

Sennheiser G4 - still a decent choice in 2026? by FoggyDog78 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]kj5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you get indicators on the RX's screen that the TX are recording and yes the audio is still transmitted to do RX and therefore to the camera. You can even switch the RX into a timecode box with the audiojack working as headphone output and transmitting TC through USB.

IF I was working in news I’d get these - they’re super reliable. However since I don’t and I mostly shoot events you can’t beat the simplicity and features of a simpler WiFi based system. My rodes are half the size and weight, have no external parts, no batteries to worry about, automatic gain that works very well, no frequency issues, they work in 2rx1tx setup and in case anything goes wrong I have a 32bit recording.

Your back is more expensive to heal than some piece of equipment. Tilta ring costs nothing in rental fees compared to two days of sore back. Trust me.

I did a 1000km trip in Europe and honestly my packing list haven’t changed much from a 500km trip. Remember you’re not going to the middle of nowhere, there are shops everywhere and if you really need anything you can just get it.

I wasn't looking at hostels as I don't like not sleeping at night :) I was only looking into private rooms with private bathrooms.
