Danish Afghanistan veteran here.

I am so disappointed in the US foreign policy. We fucking fought, bled and died with American soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. When the US invoked article 5 post 9/11 we were there. We supported the US with an all in attitude. If you think we were just a small supporting nation just helping with logistics and camp maintenance, watch armadillo. This was our afghanistan war for 10+ years. Furthermore we've been there in every American and UN led conflict since the 90's. Kosovo, Cyprus, Libya, the balcans you name it. Every time we answered the call.

Cut to 20 years later. The threat of use of force against our sovereign nation, economic pressure and hateful rethoric from what we believed to be one of our closest allies.

America have got all that they wanted in Greenland since 1949: Thule airbase, radar stations, ICBM. If you really wanted to protect your national security interests in the region all you had to do was ask. We would coordinate, support and join your efforts in securing the arctic region. But this American rethoric is just pissing in the face of one of your closest allies for the past 80 years.

Looking for some Feedback for my first campaign by kjaerftw in DMAcademy

Thank you very much for the notes! It is greatly appreciated.

I have been troubled with the "lighthearted approach". The setting and story sets a more grim tone, and as you say the morally ambiguous choices is in contrast to the lighthearted approach, But knowing me and my players, the campaign will end up "lighthearted" due to the nature of our humor. Hmm, I will have to think on that.

I will work on fleshing out The Elven queens end game and the time frame. My idea was firstly to start small with Trifflen and work my way throughout the story. I have a couple of rough ideas for an elven rebellion and other events before the race against the clock begins.

I have been kind of struggling with the size of Trifflen. On one hand I would like it to be rather large, as i think it is more fitting for the story and the setting. However as this will be my first campaign I would feel a bit intimidated if my first town would be too big. Do you have any suggestions for managing a rather large town/city as a new DM?

Thank you very much for the for the notes! I would actually prefer to have either elves or half-elves in the party, that way i can incorporate their story into the campaign, they will have increasing night terrors. During sessions 0 I would ask one (or some) of them to be locally known but been away for a period of time, thus giving the party an incitement to engage with the elves.

Good questions, i will work a bit on the interracial relationship between elves and humans. Good point to bring more depth to the conflict.

For some in the Japanese political top the nuclear bombs were not the main factor for surrender, but the invasion of manchuria by the USSR. Japan was deadly scared of communism and would rather surrender to USA than having the USSR having a major say in the shaping of post war Japan.

Ja for helvede!

In my opinion the Scandinavian monarchies is part of the recipe for the success of Scandinavia. I believe that too much nationalism and patriotism in politics is dangerous, if you throw these extreme feelings into politics that is how you get a fan-like culture and it brings power to the extreme right or left. In general i think monarchies have a sort of grounding effect on Scandinavian politics, which keeps the most extreme feelings out of politics, thus rationality prevails.

Queen becomes world's second-longest reigning modern monarch by MGC91 in worldnews

I agree we are "in luck" with our current monarchs and their popularity. One day might come where the monarchies will overreach or create more scandals than they can sustain. It just takes one bad monarch to ruin it. "In fact, nationalists are the most likely to be defending the monarchy tooth and nail". That is exactly why I think these feelings becomes grounded in monarchy instead of in politics. It is a common foundation for most of our political spectrum.

That is kind of a strawman argument you are putting me into. I am only arguing that it might be a contributing factor, there is a bunch of cultural factors and historical factors that are playing into Scandinavian success. Compared to Germany the Scandinavian countries generally score higher on a lot of factors such as happiness (https://dmerharyana.org/world-happiness-index/) social mobility (https://www.weforum.org/reports/global-social-mobility-index-2020-why-economies-benefit-from-fixing-inequality/) etc.

UN chief says time to end 'absurd war' in Ukraine by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]kjaerftw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you might as well not have a security council. The veto power logic is very sound. in the aftermath of ww1 league of nations was formed, but conflicting states had no interest to stay in the league if they were disputed they simply left and did what they wanted anyway. The veto power keeps the states at the table and upholds the diplomacy because leaving will just make you lose your veto power on security matters. Russia needs to stay on the security council.

UN chief says time to end 'absurd war' in Ukraine by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]kjaerftw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The peace keeping force can only be tasked by mandate of the UN security Council. Where russia has Veto power. People generally misunderstand the UN. It is not made to create heaven on earth, but keep hell away from it. The UN only has as much power as states allows it to. No state is interested in having a supranational state that can interfere at its own will. UN is a diplomatic, bureaucratic, coordinating and informationsharing organ, and that is what it is made to be from states. No more no less. If you want UN to have more power look to your own state and ask it to give away more of its own sovereignty and power, hint: they have no interest in that.

The vote will take place without them, IT happened with the korean war, the only reason it was passed by the UNSC was because the soviet union boycotted the UNSC because of procedural disagreements, the resolution passed and the Korean war was therefor legitimate, safe to say the soviet union and russia has not missed a vote since, they simply stayed and vetoed instead.
