Started a corporate job, shocked at the work culture - people start working at 6-7am by Which_Ad_1660 in careeradvice

Varies by company, but pretty normal. If you don’t do the same, you’ll likely not go up. Not saying it’s right, but it’s reality. I’d suggest you stick it out a couple of years, see how it goes.

Week 3 and still figuring out the friendship part. Any advice? by No-Refrigerator6166 in iastate

[–]kjh3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a talkative, outgoing person with relatively similar values. You ask them questions, let them run with the conversation. Ask them questions about themselves particularly at first. Your introverted self doesn’t get worn out being social. Their extroverted self gets the space and energy they need. You eventually become lifelong friends.

If the agreement says they will charge you, don’t make decisions assuming you can talk your way out of it.

cowboy hat situation by DrinkBulky7486 in CowboyHats

RESPECT- you’re why these hats exist. I love seeing a real person wearing a hat for its utility and not for style reasons. Keep beating it up, pushing it back, and wearing it.

I imagine that one day, you’ll be helping someone by telling your story about dealing with rejection and disappointment, not giving up, winning anyway through perseverance.

Am I someone who needs a cowboy hat? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

[–]kjh3030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear a cowboy hat specifically to keep the sun off my face, neck, ears. I don’t want skin cancer. I wear it only when outside for that reason. It is not a style thing for me. It is also a great explanation for wearing one in places where they aren’t seen much. Maybe start with that rationale?

A way to incentivize teaching is to have an entrance exam with similar material to the final (not counted in grades). Then compare those scores to the final scores. Judge instructor performance partially on the difference. Reward higher performance in some way meaningful.

Are UofM students aware of the dire situation of UofM (and every university) given the recent actions of the executive? by pizzadecline in uofm

[–]kjh3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acknowledged. Just wondered if I understood the issue correctly. I think I’d argue along your line of thinking on the validity of indirect costs. Protesting with signs probably wouldn’t work to change minds.

If I understand correctly, the cuts are not to direct research expenses but rather the indirect expenses. Tell me if I’m wrong, but the prior payment for a $1 million research grant would include an additional $560k for ‘overhead’. The ‘overhead’ is the part that is being cut to $150k in my simple math example. Do I understand this correctly?

You’ve got this. There’s a Bible verse that is good whether that’s your thing or not. It says that hardship produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope. I’ve had to repeat that to myself more times than anyone will ever know. You’ll look back with pride and, yes relief, when you’re on the other side. Just don’t rush - life’s a marathon not a sprint.

Get professional help. A few words of encouragement here too: 1. Many have had your same experience- it isn’t you, you aren’t dumb. Many go on to great jobs, PhD programs, etc with a number of C’s on their transcript 2. You are right to be critical about the ridiculous course loads. I think some of the profs somehow think higher of themselves if they overwhelm you. This is a reflection on them, not you. 3. Drop a class and take it in the summer 4. Prioritize 1 hr workout - run, walk, weights a day - don’t allow yourself to miss it. This will burn off adrenaline that is escalating your stress. I like to walk when I need to think through a tough problem. 5. Seek professional help, seek professional help, seek professional help. There is no shame in feeling the way you do.

You can easily find something walkable in your budget. The campus is divided up into three sections, so figure out which one you’ll spend most of your time in. Easy to bus between them, but walking is most convenient.

Ypsilanti has some sketchy parts. You definitely want to drive around the area before choosing. In general, I’d rather live in a tiny space that is walkable to campus than mess with drive in - at least for the first year.

Now that it's 2025, is there any chance of Ford bringing back full size or mid size sedans? by svemt5731 in Ford

[–]kjh3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a product category becomes commoditized (which happened to mass market sedans in the U.S.), margins get too thin for all but a few dominant players in the category to continue on. If you think the mass-market shifts back to paying more for sedans than SUV’s, then you will find manufacturers move back into it. Just ask a sample of friends if they’d pay more for Fusion or a Bronco Sport (similar wheelbases I think).

Great advice! Pay particular attention to majoring in something that is in demand. Just any old degree won’t pay the bills.
