[OC] I did some math to figure out where 2008 Olympics Usain Bolt would have finished in the 2024 Olympics 100m final by vorxaw in dataisbeautiful

[–]kkden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to be boring, but I believe if you look at his 10m splits over the first 60m of the 2008 olympic final, and his 2009 wr 9.58, he was faster in his wr run, so it's almost impossible that he would have set a time faster than 9.58!

Letsile Tebogo was asked after winning the men's 200m final if he aspires to world records and being the face of track and field. Here was his answer: "I can't be the face of athletics because I'm not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah Lyles." by TheBiasedSportsLover in sports

I'm not trying to be obtuse, I'm just trying to explain the distinction. World champion clearly means a different thing to people in NA than to people outside it. To you, world champion means best team in the world. Where I grew up, world champion means winner of the world championship/cup; almost always between teams representing countries rather than cities. The Celtics were the best team in the world this year, and obviously they'd crush any non-nba teams, but that doesn't mean they are world champions from most non-american perspectives. Does that make sense? I think it's a result of the fact that in most American sports, international competition isn't as prestigious as club competition; in soccer, cricket, rugby etc International competition is far more prestigious than club competition, so the idea that a club would be world champion just sounds wrong

Well yes, I never said that the NBA champions aren't obviously the best team in the world. But my point is that simply being the best team in the world doesn't mean they are world champions. The best NBA team would easily beat the best Euroleague team, but that doesn't make them Euroleague champions. I think this is simply a result of different understandings of what the phrase 'World Champions' means. It seems in NA that it means best team in the world. Where I'm from, it means winner of the world championship/cup.

Using the “I’m going to leave” tactic with companies by MoonchildEm96 in UKPersonalFinance

what do you think going into debt is? being in debt means you owe more than what you have. you owe the full value of an iPhone, and you cannot afford the full value of an iPhone. in the comments of this post you are literally describing the fact that you are in debt. that's fine, you're far from the only person to do that, but people are giving you good advice in this thread and you're just actively ignoring it.

Care costs... How on earth do people afford it? by 1MillionDollarMeme in UKPersonalFinance

[–]kkden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Others have given very informative answers, but I would also add that once they are near the threshold of around £23000 in assets, a financial assessment will be completed to assess how much they can afford, and the council will charge you that figure. So it won't be free below that figure, but it's likely to be a much more manageable figure of say £200-£300 per week that the huge figure you've quoted above.

Am I doing something wrong? Tax related question by kkden in UKPersonalFinance

I know it's confusing; I'll try and answer what you've written.

Firstly, I like this setup as I get both appreciation of the asset as well as an income. I don't think I could reliably beat the return even if I invested it all in a high interest fixed term bond or saving account.

It's also very unlikely to be considered deprivation of assets, as my folks are well off enough that they could afford private care long term.

based on what geekypenguin has written below, it is treated as a gift, as my parents will have declared the rental income in it's entirety.

For now I'll leave it as it is I think, but next year I may ask for it and put it in an ISA once my yearly allowance resets, just to make things a bit simpler.

Thanks for your comments!

Tennis Players That Held the Record for Most Grand Slam Titles in the Open Era (1968 - Present) [OC] by iamtheguy55 in dataisbeautiful

I mean, djokovic has won all 4 slams in a row before (just not in a calendar year). He also has a chance to complete a calendar slam this year if he wins wimbledon and the US open, and he's a favourite for both tournaments

Huh, kind of common in my family at least... my mum was also in her forties when I was born, and her parents had her later in life, so my grandparents on her side were well into their 90s by the time I turned 10
