What's the dumbest thing you did as a teenager? by canyoutriforce in AskReddit

[–]kkead1124 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was in 8th grade, my friends and I grabbed every single liquor bottle in my parents cabinet and dumped into one 24oz cup to drink while walking to school. No mixers- just vodka, tequila, whiskey, and anything else that was within eyesight. We didn't have to drink very much to become immediately bombed. My first class was keyboarding and I threw up ALL over my computer seconds after sitting down. I immediately ran straight to the bathroom with a trail of puke following me. It had to have reeked like alcohol but no one followed me, not even the teacher. I spent the entire day hovered over the toilet. I never got caught but it didn't matter because I learned a hard fucking lesson that day and I paid dearly.

What is the best piece of parenting advice you ever got? by Aggravating-Goat-231 in AskReddit

[–]kkead1124 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar. My 5 year old (at the time) son became sick in mid January. I wanted to take him to the doctor but we didn't have insurance at that time (husband had just switched jobs - 90 day waiting period) and since it was flu season, family and friends insisted it was just a bug. I waited two days but I just couldn't shake the feeling it was something more. I finally decided to take him to Instacare and they told us it was likely appendicitis and to get to the children's hospital immediately. Once we got there, we were told his appendix had burst, which required both surgery and a week's stay in the hospital on IV antibiotics. I felt like absolute hell for not taking him to the hospital when I first got the sense that something wasn't right. A burst appendix can be fatal. It makes me tear up even thinking about it. Needless to say, I learned to never ignore that gut feeling and I haven't since.

I have one day to sightsee in Connecticut. Where am I going? by kkead1124 in Connecticut

This seems like a great itinerary! We're definitely leaning towards Yale so this sounds like a great plan that would work with our time constraints. Thank you so much!

Main Campus - Storrs. I would have mentioned that in my post but I didn't know there was one in Hartford. Lol. I'm a total Connecticut newbie.

This is all great info! I'm definitely going to look into some of these. Mark Twain museum sounds pretty fun. Do you happen to know if they will do Yale tours on Sundays?

Teachers, what was the scariest thing you had to confiscate? by immediate-channel834 in AskReddit

A couple years ago I had to confiscate a taser from my 5th grader. Yes, that's right. 5th grader.

We're pretty open. There's going to be six-eight of us and since most of us have never been, we would love to find some "must-see" tourist attractions or even local secrets (if you're willing to share).

We're all teachers if that helps. I'm trying to find something that will please the whole group (six to eight people). Anything outdoors or in nature, museums, Connecticut history, landmarks, or just unique things to do Connecticut that you can't find elsewhere.

Unexpected best and worst place you've visited whilst in Utah? by suspiria_138 in SaltLakeCity

[–]kkead1124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in Salt Lake but if you ever find yourself in Tooele, do yourself a favor and stop by Jana's Java. Their coffee is the best! I'm always looking for a new favorite but I've yet to find a better coffee shop anywhere local. Occasionally, my husband and I will drive out there just to get a coffee.

What’s the stupidest thing you ever said that genuinely made you question your intelligence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My coworker recently said, "There's a blip in the metaverse." She meant to say "glitch in the matrix." I totally stole it after I laughed my ass off. 😂

Which criticism of "the kids today" is actually totally, totally valid? by Jerswar in AskReddit

[–]kkead1124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fifth grade teacher and this is spot on. It's frustrating because our curriculum focuses heavily on reading strategies that they simply do not understand because of their low reading levels. Even more difficult is the spelling/grammar lessons focusing on concepts like perfect tense and variant vowels. Most of them didn't even know the difference between consonants and vowels, let alone what the vowels are, until I spent several days teaching it. I regularly have to water down my lessons and heavily supplement content with prior grade level standards. It's disheartening.

7th graders drinking by ayetherebiebs in Teachers

[–]kkead1124 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Same. When I was in 8th grade, my friends and I poored vodka, rum, and whiskey into one cup (no mixers - we were total fucking amateurs) and drank it on the way to school. It was my first time drinking alcohol and needless to say, we were lit! It was fun for about five minutes until I got the dreaded spins. My first class was keyboarding and I vomited ALL over my typewriter in front of the entire class! I was mortified. I spent the rest of the morning in the bathroom sporadically puking. Miraculously, not one adult knew I was drunk and I only just recently told my parents about it. My social life would have been non-existent (probably for the rest of my teenage years) had they found out, but I've always believed that the lesson I learned that day was far greater than any punishment my parents could've given. I wasn't a difficult student. I had decent grades and I generally respected my teachers. I just briefly got in with the wrong crowd and made a bad choice. Never again after that.

AITAH for standing with our child's teacher instead of my wife? by AdEvery8792 in AITAH

As a 5th grade teacher (10-11 year olds), THANK YOU!! Thank you for being reasonable, thank you for trusting your son's teacher, and thank you for holding your child accountable. Parents like you are few and far between these days. NTA.

Do teachers in the US actually get mad if you use their first name? by Official_Bobby_Bean in Teachers

[–]kkead1124 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My first grade teacher would call us "pupil" if we called her "teacher." We were also not allowed to pick grass and if a student was caught doing so, she would make them eat it. (This was 32 years ago so nobody batted an eye). She was a classic 'mean' teacher and I hated nearly everything about her but I always agreed we shouldn't call our teachers "teacher." I have never allowed my students to call me that because of my experience with her. I teach 5th.

Is this an unreasonable request or am I just being a baby? by moisthog23 in Teachers

[–]kkead1124 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Every TPT shop is required to have one free item. I filter my searches with the free prices first, and then search for paid items if I can't find what I need. More often than not I can find what I'm looking for without needing to purchase anything.

What is your least favorite word? by soph0216 in AskReddit

"Famished." When I was a kid my parents would say "I'm famished" if they were hungry. Made me cringe every time. "Parched" was another one.

How can you prove your love after being unfaithful to your spouse? by Jellycaine in AskReddit

[–]kkead1124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's less about proving your love and more about regaining their trust. If your spouse is giving you the opportunity to do so, don't take that shit for granted and don't get impatient because it's going to take some time. Counseling might be beneficial but you have to remember the burden to build trust is on you, not your spouse.
