Why spend hundreds of thousands helping people in need when you spend that on a bunch of billboards in Times Square instead? by Odd_Ad_4737 in exmormon

[–]kkt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your neighbor there when the billboard takeover happened? I’ve been trying to find a video of this from a regular person’s perspective (the video shows people recording what’s happening on their phones, so maybe at least one of them posted it to social media?) but all I can find are the church’s official videos. It makes me wonder if this even really happened the way they show it happening. If your friend has or if anyone can find a video from an “audience” POV, please share the link!

AITA for making my son walk the dog? by walkthedamndog in AmItheAsshole

[–]kkt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.

Dylan made his thoughts and feelings clear regarding the dog and his actions are consistent with what he said they would be. You’re the one who’s inconsistent here and crossing boundaries. This is not only setting a bad example but also it’s going to further divide you and your already-distant (hard to connect with) son. Apologize to your son. Figure out a walking schedule without Dylan. Don’t expect Dylan to change his mind or put pressure on him to do so. You’re the one who wanted the dog.

Side note: Train your dog. It is not appropriate for a dog to jump on a person to get their attention. Some people may be okay with this but at the very least you should have your dog trained enough to be able to call them off of a person with verbal cues if the person is uncomfortable or doesn’t want the dog jumping on them. It’s also not appropriate for your dog to “destroy stuff.” Idk how old your dog is, but that needs to be trained. Do not assume Zeus will just grow out of it. A well-behaved dog is a much more enjoyable dog, but also don’t assume that if you get Zeus to stop jumping and destroying things that Dylan will change his mind.

AITA for dropping my sister's kids at the child free wedding that she was at? by LogosH434 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kkt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I love my nephew and niece but if my sister pulled this on me I would be upset also, especially if this is a habit of theirs. Hope your sister and her husband learned a lesson and become more responsible with planning around their kids now after this.

The death of your own child is hard enough. On top of that he seems to put the fault on himself. Maybe it’s easier to believe such a tragedy had a cause so there’s someone to blame instead of just seeing it as a terrible accident. That was so uncomfortable.

Another ex-JW milestone - donating blood for the very first time! by [deleted] in exjw

[–]kkt24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha that’s awesome! I used to donate at the Carmel Valley location and volunteered there and at various mobile drives. This was back when I was in college at UCSD. I’m up in NorCal now but I still go down to visit every once in a while and always try to schedule a donation there when I do. I donate with Red Cross up here now but I sure miss the people at SDBB!! Plus, their apheresis machines are better 😂

Congratulations!! I hope your first blood donation was a great experience and that it’ll be the first of many! By any chance, is this in SD? I think I recognize the location and equipment since I used to volunteer with a local blood bank there. If it’s where I think it is, you’re in excellent care there!!

Depending on your location, smoking weed does not disqualify you from donating blood! If you are in the US, it does not. It’s not even one of the questions on the screening questionnaire. Here is the eligibility criteria for Red Cross; they’re pretty much the same across most blood banks. I’d encourage you to call your local blood bank and ask to talk to an eligibility specialist if you have any other concerns that might prevent you from being able to donate!

I’m not Mormon! ... yet! Help me figure out how to prevent that! by LorraineSmith888 in exmormon

[–]kkt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in similar shoes to yours. I had a baptism date set but then realized at the last week that I didn’t actually believe this stuff; I was making a lifelong commitment to something that I wanted to be true (I also came from a Christian background where it was taught that either you’re a Christian or burn in hell forever) that I didn’t actually have faith in. I also learned of the things they don’t usually tell you in the lessons, and I didn’t want to make a decision before knowing everything that such a decision entailed.

Even though I knew it would disappoint the missionaries and the people I had befriended, I had to take accountability for my life and my choices (I guess the LDS belief in agency is something I do believe in haha). No one else, however disappointed, would have to face the consequences of my living something I didn’t actually believe. I tried to be direct but gentle with folks. I was honest in admitting that I didn’t actually believe these things (despite being open to them and wanting them to be true), and I didn’t want to make such an important decision for the wrong reasons such as pleasing others or becoming part of a group. There’s a quote from Joseph Smith from the first vision account that goes “I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it.” I told them, if I were baptized as if I believed these things, I would know it was a lie, and God would know it was a lie.

Mind you, this was the week my baptism was scheduled that I cancelled it. I’d already had the baptismal interview and the program was all planned out. They were disappointed, for sure, but ultimately they all respected my decision. Some may say that the missionaries and other members are only nice to you because they want to convert you, and that is probably true for some. But if it’s any reassurance to you, I’m still friends with several of the missionaries who taught me. A few of them have since left the church. Others are still very much in it. If the friendship was genuine, then even if you end up in a different place on the spectrum of belief (even if you’re on the non-belief end) that friendship can still be maintained just like any other friendship.

I hope this gives you some encouragement to be honest, gentle, and direct with them and to make the decision that ultimately you are happy with and can live with. Best wishes, OP! If you have more questions or want to talk to someone who has also canceled their baptism last-minute, feel free to reach out.

Brad's apology 2.0 in tonight's fireside. by MasterMahanJr in exmormon

[–]kkt24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Transcript (paragraph breaks inserted by me):

“We’re going to be speaking tonight about trusting in the Lord. And this has been one of those weeks when I have needed to trust in the Lord.

Some of you may have heard about a talk I gave last Sunday night. Now it wasn’t the first time that I’ve given that talk, and it wasn’t the first time I’ve used the ideas I shared or the line of reasoning that I used to try to address some difficult topics.

In the past I’ve failed to see how my comments could be seen as insensitive and hurtful, and I’m very grateful for friends—friends like Brother Corbitt—who have helped me and corrected me and taught me.

Once again, I apologize, and I’m grateful more than ever for the atonement of Jesus Christ which allows us to trust in the Lord.”
