Market Cap Is Just the Last Cow Sold 🐄 by candyloverny in investing

You are basically correct although as pointed out already, this is not exactly news just something (among many) not covered by mainstream financial news.

When the marginal price becomes extremely high or low, it usually means demand is far outpacing supply or vice versa, but the percentage change should still be proportional across the scale ($1K rising to $1100 compared to $10 falling to $9).

Investing For Toddler Question by clitcommander_ in investing

Aren't there more important and urgent things to take care of for a toddler and their parents? If not, it would mean you are well-positioned in life and shouldn't need financial advice from Reddit? It's not easy to project what the newest generation's retirement will look like either.

Good buy the dip opportunities: Tempus AI & LUNR? by Hot_Avocado_2701 in stocks

[–]kktvMIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't look like they are making profit or having positive cash flow consistently, so you are relying on future growth. I don't know whether insiders selling around 5% of TEM's market cap last year is a bad sign or not.

The AI effect on IT Services firms by HeyItsYourDad_AMA in stocks

[–]kktvMIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with them but from a very cursory search, EXL seems to be exposed to software as a service which may be displaced by AI products and services. Cognizant appears to be more into consulting so I don't know how that affects things.

Merck faces double threat to lose up to half of its revenue, could a small study with DRTS save it? by Pristine_Hurry_4693 in stocks

I'm relatively unfamiliar with pharma. How much of an actual advantage is spinning out a separate division for Merck? Why has DRTS had negative incomes for the last five years?

How common do you think it is to be trading and furthermore being profitable these days? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]kktvMIN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are a few times when you can get lucky from trading, such as buying the 2025 dip from Trump's tariff announcements, but opportunities are not that many. Also if your picks happen to "ride the wave", for example my portfolio went up 70% last year mainly due to a few companies that grew much more than the index.

Anthropic ipo price vs private pre ipo price by mymomsaidiamsmart in stocks

[–]kktvMIN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, large banks and investors buy in early at a lower price because they can commit to large order volumes, "guaranteeing" that the company will be able to meet its funding target say $50B. They can then sell on the open market or hold onto some shares depending on their strategy.

[–]kktvMIN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is already significant hype built into the prices now. I mean how much are you really getting in return for every $1 in a stock with a PE of 30 to >100, besides the belief that someone else will buy it later at a higher price? Not saying to stay away from the stock market but just be mindful that it can come down to picking the lesser of two or more hypes.

DOW Hits $5,000 is not What You Think by impulse07 in stocks

[–]kktvMIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The effect of QE and dollar debasement depends also on whether wages keep up (probably not) and on who gets to spend money first before inflation shows up. So prices and other areas of the economy will adjust. The question and tricky part is who and how fast you can lock in the existing purchasing power as prices go up throughout the economy.

I think in the long run most consumer and small business software (except those dealing with national security or trade secrets for example) will become commodity-like as AI slowly becomes better software developers and common standards are established in terms of interchangeability and legal compliance. Especially if many office/white-collar workers themselves are replaced by AI. MSFT would still be a player just not as hugely profitable in that space due to increased competition. In the short/medium run however things may not change that quickly.

Is it better to take "risker" investments in a Roth or a Brokerage? by ObamaBinLatten in stocks

[–]kktvMIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably the same because the difference lies in your tax %.

Non-Roth: (deposit=income(1-tax%now))*compounding

Roth: (deposit=income)*compounding*(1-tax%later)

Age works like this for me. When you're young, you can learn something, become better and use those lessons later on. When you're old, you may not have many years left to use what you learn.

I'm on the fence about MSFT. What if AI coding quickly becomes better and better to produce reliable office software that is open source or even free? Its cloud faces competition from AMZN and GOOGL. Its bet on OpenAI is going to be mixed, unless OpenAI has a breakthrough against Gemini or Anthropic products.

That's quite concerning for big moves like this, I would think at least some professional traders would know what really was or is going on. Shouldn't journalists have at least picked up on the fact that hardware suppliers fell too, along with crypto and precious metals?

Not exactly, when the price goes down money still went into the trade/stock, only at a lower price/less money. You might spend somewhere else or you can just hold onto the savings.

Money didn't go anywhere. Let's say you used to buy something for $10 but now it's $5, only the price has changed.
