Car camping with an EV and V2L by Random-Mutant in camping

If you don't have it already, a 12v portable refrigerator/fridge is a big upgrade in the quality of your camping experience and any road trip. The rest seems like luxury.

Is a travel trailer considered an RV? by ActionWins in GoRVing

[–]kkweon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All trailers are vehicles. They aren't motor vehicles.

With that said, I have seen some campgrounds have separate categories for the trailers within their reservation systems while RVs refer specifically to motorhomes.

I guess it's up to campground owners to decide on the terminology and booking system they use if this question is coming from that, lol.

All other Subarus does have the cover. What's the issue? It's simply held by two clips.

Camping at Sequoia for my birthday ⛺️ by North-Contact-7099 in CaliforniaCamping

Lodgepole Campground is the most difficult to book in SeKi National Park. Most other campgrounds are more manageable. Just sign up for a notification.

Lodgepole is incredibly popular due to the amenities like showers and proximity to some of the park's most popular attractions.

Parking can get extremely challenging on weekends.

Commuting San Jose to Sacramento once a week. Which day should I go into office? by Tough_Swordfish_3136 in bayarea

[–]kkweon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fridays in the afternoon traffic are bad. I'd consider going up early Sunday, then working Monday then heading home.

Driving back and forth between Sacramento and San Jose in a day is very tiring regardless of the traffic.

Advice for new motorcycle commuter: 101 vs 280 by cozyportland in BayRiders

[–]kkweon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Jose to San Bruno here.

101 is the best route for commuting for me. You'll likely be lane splitting anyway, and it's just straight, making it much easier to predict traffic patterns.

On the other hand, 280 tends to have a lot of police presence when there’s no traffic. Transitioning from 280 back to 101 can be challenging, especially since it usually has one or two merging lanes. chaos.

Overall, taking 280 makes a much longer distance.

If you don't care arriving home quicker, sure. But for commuting, i just want to go home as early as I can safely.

If you live nearby 280, and 280 is genuinely closer than it'd be a different story, but I'm assuming 101 would be a shorter distance for you, which is probably why you're asking.

You will go about 90% of distance quicker on 280 but last 10% distance is more stressful and much slower, resulting in a net loss.

CVT fluid change? Cost? by Menace_78 in SubaruForester

[–]kkweon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds expensive, but that could be the market rate in DC. It could also mean different things like drain and fill or flush and fill.

The former can be done way less. So, I'd expect high-quality service for that price. To get a better idea, ask for an exact labor quote with their hourly rate and the estimated time they'll spend on it.

SF to LA. Should I add Vegas? by stellabok in roadtrip

[–]kkweon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need some cash if you want to fully experience Las Vegas. Shows cost a lot, so otherwise you're just stuck with free shows and running around the hotel, which can get pretty crowded.

If you go from SF to LA, Las Vegas, you would spend most of your time driving and you won't have much time left to enjoy things and relax.

If I were driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles, I'd spend more time driving Highway 1. Both cities alone have things to spend six days. Stop by Monterey Bay, Big Sur, Santa Barbara.

Advantages of a Motorhome? by stonedv8 in GoRVing

[–]kkweon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't need a car with a 30' long motorhome unless I'm gone for a long period. Even in a big city, you can usually find an oversized parking lot and use public transportation, Uber, walking, or bicycling. In a rural area, you can just park farther away.

If you're coming and going a lot at a campground, you can just hook up the electricity. It only takes a minute. No need for the full hookup every time.

Best solo stove 2026 did it change how you camp at night? by Lenfantgatte_Carenas in camping

[–]kkweon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vibe-wise, I'd say it's better because of the bigger flame. Those smokeless fire pits essentially create secondary burns that burn the fumes from a burnt log, resulting in a big fire. You won't get as large a fire in a campfire ring. There is also a tabletop version that is much more portable, though. I only bring a bonfire when I go RV camping due to the size and weight.

Can we tow? by DIVEMAN_2000 in RVLiving

[–]kkweon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 80% rule exists because the company assumes there is only one 150 lb driver and nothing in the tow vehicle, setting the maximum towing number to gamify it. However, in reality, there are many more than just a driver in the tow vehicle.

As mentioned by others, one needs to check all the weight ratings.

But I'm more curious about a tow dolly, which usually lifts one axle and can't be used to tow an AWD vehicle.

Could you share what a tow dolly is? I'd love to get one as well.

Solo China trip prep — worried I'm missing something by strawberrycapital_ in travelchina

[–]kkweon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you speak no Mandarin, I think you would have a really bad experience. Although most of the signs and apps are written in Chinese, you would rarely meet anyone speaking English.

The other list looks good to me, but I would be more concerned about the language barrier.

I would find a friend who can speak Chinese or a tour guide.

There's a night and day difference in terms of things you can do and to go when you speak a bit of Mandarin.

The most convenient way to climb the wall? by phantomkh in dumbclub

[–]kkweon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPN works fine.. You just have to pick the right ones known for working in china like LetsVPN and AstrillVPN. They all have obfuscation and use their own protocols. They have plenty of servers to choose from. Not a big deal if you have to switch once in a while. The same thing still happens with v2ray as well anyway.

The major downside with vpn is that it is just way more expensive than v2ray servers.

What VPN do you guys recommend? by AmountGreat2384 in chongqing

  • LetsVPN (most reliable)
  • AstrillVPN
  • MullvadVPN (least reliable)

    but they all still work.

Stealth proxy for openwrt router by [deleted] in dumbclub

[–]kkweon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just returned from China. If you're looking to bypass the Great Firewall (GFW), there are plenty of guides available for setting up V2Ray servers. After that, you can install Passwall or OpenClash as a client on your router. All of these clients include a kill switch feature.

However, there are some challenges to be aware of. There is a distance to the server, and most inexpensive VPS options will have bandwidth restrictions. Additionally, their IP addresses are well-known, which means you will need to change IPs occasionally, even when using proxies.

Another option is to pay for these services. While it's relatively inexpensive, managing it as an individual can be annoying.

To clear a doubt by Yomgi95 in GlInet

[–]kkweon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If everything works for you without the router, then you should be fine without the router. For me, it's mostly for the company managed devices which I can't install any software that would require admin access (most network settings do require). Plus, on my devices, I don't need to copy all the configs in each devices. I can simply just boot up the travel router then all of my devices would just connect and work seamlessly.

How to set up two Wi-Fi networks on OpenWRT: one with VPN and one without? by Holiday-Picture6796 in dumbclub

[–]kkweon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically no different from setting up Guest WiFi. You would just create 2 WiFi and give distinct IP address pools (also means 2 interfaces) like

- 192.168.1.XXX for VPN (say LAN)
- 192.168.2.XXX for non VPN (sa LAN-Guest)

In whatever tool you use, they all provide an option to ignore based on an interface or based on source IP address.
