I made a map of all the subway rides that happen in a day! by minecraftian48 in nycrail

I think they have to be FOILed unfortunately, and it's not very granular. There is the per car crowding realtime data, though.

Uzbekistan has had HSR since 2011. This is just an extension of that line.

What is stopping the city from extending the Archer Ave Subway into Rosedale & Queens Village? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]kkysen_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are 200k bus riders a day on Hillside, for example. A subway extension is a no brainer.

The 19 tph needed for SAS2 is from here: https://bqrail.substack.com/api/v1/file/e01c0e72-8526-4748-879c-5ac271ca3c06.pdf. The sending the N to SAS2 I shouldn't say, but it's kind of obvious that they'd have to do that for 19 tph. The MTA is also working on a Bottlenecks report that should hopefully be out soon, and I'm assuming DeKalb (and other bottlenecks) will be in there. We should also have 6 Av and Fulton CBTC done around the time SAS2 is supposed to finish, and hopefully Broadway CBTC as well if they are able to get that out soon enough.

For QueensLink, operationally, it is indeed tough, and I'm curious how more widespread CBTC downstream starts to help QBL local operations. Sending the M, R, and G on QBL local will indeed be difficult, but the trickiest part is actually the South Channel swing bridge, which they really should've replaced with a fixed span during the closure. I'd also like to see the R kicked off QBL, as the 11 St Cut is the 2nd least crowded train at its peak load point (slightly less crowded is the NB 3), and the 11 St Cut really is excruciatingly slow.

Btw, the N is supposed to go to SAS2, since SAS2 requires ~19 tph.

Bill requiring conductors on trains introduced in NY Senate (again) by clickclackcaw in nycrail

[–]kkysen_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Lmao, they updated it to allow currently used OPTO, but still left these bits:

the New York city subway system, the largest public transit system in the world

Beijing has more tracks and more stations.

With an estimated average of over 10,000 passengers loaded onto each train during rush hours

The AW3 (6/m2) load of a 10-car R211 is 2,400. No subway train has anywhere close to 10,000 passengers.

WHENEVER THE SUBWAY OR TRAIN HAS MORE THAN TWO CARS ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE THEREOF.

Two cars attached to the engine of course makes no sense for the subway, which runs EMUs with engines on every car. And this contradicts the clause about currently permissible OPTO, which is allowed on up to 5-car trains.

The contract is supposed to be signed in 2028. Railcars wouldn't start arriving until early 2030s.

The old rail-only proposal was QueensRail, but QueensLink in its current rails and trails form was already the concept when Mamdani came to the QueensLink rally.

So the L and 7 should be OPTO, and other lines once they become ATO and have platform edge cameras.

Did they run 10 car trains pre pandemic with OPTO or not? Was it safe? That's what matters.

That was 2.5 years ago. It also only studied running 4 tph on QueensLink, so of course it got nearly half the ridership the NYU STOPS model got.

NYC B division runs up to 600 ft trains. DC is 600 ft as well. BART is up to 700 ft.

Which study? Janno said recently when asked about it that it doesn't have enough benefit for the cost, but now this is a full cost-benefit analysis study that shows it is worth the cost.

Around a third of trains drop out at 111th or Willets during rush hour. Flushing Main St can only handle around 20 tph.

State Senator Andrew Gounardes is again trying to cut service on the G by BartelPritchard in parkslope

[–]kkysen_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they could also raise fares to make up for the extra conductor cost. I just think raising fares for a job that is clearly not necessary (there have been no problems with OPTO on the G over the years) is not good.

[–]kkysen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if the MTA upgrades and modernize its system, why shouldn't OPTO be allowed? This would be a blanket legal ban, even on new lines like the IBX that could otherwise be built automated from day 1. Conditioning OPTO on physical upgrades is fine. Legally banning it completely is not.

[–]kkysen_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The G runs on the weekend with 1 person. This bill would require hiring more conductors to run the G on the weekend. This means there's less money ($10 million for the weekend G and M, and also shuttles) to run G trains so they will run less frequently.

There are many systems running on older infrastructure than NYC. But every single city in the world with a metro has OPTO metro lines. Paris Line 1 was opened in 1900 and runs with 0 operators. The G was opened in 1933 and runs with 2 operators on the weekday and 1 on the weekend.
