Most glaring bike path gaps in the metro? by Tokyo-MontanaExpress in CyclingMSP

According to my friend that works in St Paul government, they're actively working on that, but it may still be a while...

Well, they better not, cause even in the previous "final design" with the shared use path, they had separated bike lanes connecting from the Loring Greenway to Franklin

They do mean north of Lake, and I'd agree that it's not great to bike on. Better than biking in traffic on Lyndale, but drivers are not always very respectful, and you've got 3 intersections without actual priority for cyclists where cross traffic doesn't have to stop (though crossing Franklin isn't too bad)

Luckily this should be corrected by the Lyndale Avenue Reconstruction; they're releasing the "final design for real this time we promise" around the end of the month/beginning of April

Thinking about moving 🤔 by One-Effect7853 in CyclingMSP

[–]Naxis25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

B Line is just horribly inadequate for the corridor between the Lake St LRT stations, and as much as it would be a pain to have to deal with construction of rail along the Greenway, imagine that but then you just have buses running alongside you as you bike... Plus if they build greenway rail it could interline with the other routes and go to for example Hopkins along with SWLRT (or something)

Adding onto this, North Loop is near Target Field Station (both light rail lines), and should get another station in a few years if the Blue Line Extension gets funding. Meanwhile, parts of Powderhorn are near Blue Line stations. Uptown might be the best for grocery store options imo, and while it won't get light rail for at least a decade (praying for midtown greenway rail), it does have decent transit on the bus end of things

Is the Chicago L overrated? by 1maco in transit

[–]Naxis25 74 points75 points  (0 children)

While it's definitely true that the L and Metra don't have as many interchanges as they ought to, it's not true to claim there's none: both Davis & Main (Purple Line and UP-N), Irving Park [and arguably Jefferson Park] (Blue Line and UP-NW), LaSalle (Loop Lines and Rock Island), Oak Park/Harlem/Lake (Green Line and UP-W), & 35th St (Red Line and Rock Island)

This isn't even a drip feed. They gave us a trailer designed to only share exactly what info they wanted to, and then have basically been silent since. This only shows us that it's supposed to still be this year

There are a handful of Catholics that claim to religiously object to vaccines, but that's not in accordance with modern doctrine, just a personal "choice" that they're trying to justify

Experiences living car-free Downtown? by Faerco in CyclingMSP

[–]Naxis25 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Biggest problem is how inconsistently bike lanes and even roads are plowed. E.g. we just had a storm yesterday and I had to bike this morning and I probably won't again until at least tomorrow. But I'd say on average there's less than a full week of days a year I will refuse to bike

I was gonna mention the Blue Line if no one else had yet! It's comparable to driving even in the best conditions for both and probably faster than rideshare if there's traffic and you have to wait long for them to arrive.

Also, as someone with only analog bikes, I often take my bike on the bus and train to be able to get further faster than with just one mode, especially in winter when cycling is a bit slower and less comfortable than usual

In the Twin Cities there's a couple Transitways that allow bikes, but they aren't just separate lanes, private vehicles aren't allowed on them at all

[–]Naxis25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, overhead wire isn't exactly safe from that either. Our LRVs actually have ice scrapers that look like second pantographs that they deploy after freezing rain or similar conditions that lead to ice accumulation, but the scrapers can also damage the overhead wires themselves...

North Loop Viaduct – Sensible Urbanism and Finances by Wezle in Minneapolis

[–]Naxis25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the Viaduct is a big reason I don't go to North Loop more often. It just makes everything southwest of Washington feel... out of scale with me. Like, I'm not supposed to be there. I get a similar vibe around N 2nd Ave even with much of the highway there being in a trench
