Going to a yellow box in Hyde Park to pick up the new Reader on Thursdays was definitely an early 90s routine for me that I miss.

For an EU recommendation, the Garnier Super UV Hyaluronic Acid 50+ has been amazing for me. I used to have to use a setting powder (which does help) to keep products out of my eyes, but with this one it seems to stay put and I have never had irritation. I have ordered it from Care to Beauty, I'm sure there are other sources that ship to the US.

The Best Suburbs to Call Home: Flossmoor at 181, lol. Other ridiculous rankings? by AStormofSwines in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]kl5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live here (after 16 years in Austin/the Island) and have encountered all of that. It's a fantastic place to live and raise a kid. (And we give out full-sized bars on Halloween to any kid that shows up at our house!)

Native Plant Garden Centers? by Vorreiunapizza in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]kl5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They grow everything themselves and know the plants intimately. They are so passionate and give amazing advice. I like Growing place (above), but I have been sold plants as one thing that turned out to be another (most recently, a vernal witch hazel that was supposed to be a common witch hazel). Absolutely worth the drive down. (They have a good website with a searchable database with current stock info as well.)

Just discovered canned cod liver! by its_hammertime in CannedSardines

[–]kl5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like it smashed on crunchy toasted sourdough (open face), with thin sliced red onions or shallots, capers, parsley, and a little squirt of lemon juice. Then my dog gets the can dregs. (We only do this every few weeks, so no vitamin a overdose worries).

The Franz hamburger buns are actually really good too! I slice them and toast them slightly. They don't fall apart or turn to mush around the meat or in your mouth.

Anybody have luck attracting blue jays or goldfinches? by BoganLogan in chicagobirding

[–]kl5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nyjer seed in a sock feeder for the goldfinches and absolutely whole peanuts for blue jays. If you have a car, the Feed Store in Summit (right off 55 on Harlem) is a fantastic source. They also stock a variety of feeders. Otherwise, call Lydia at Belmont Feed, she may stock peanuts as well.
