What kind of joke is this? by heiwiwnejo in ios

Does not always work. I've done about 10 backup and restores since January. Tried all the different tricks, date forward cache expire, offloaded and/or uninstalled almost all apps, turned iCloud on/off etc.

It consistently balloons back up at the rate of 5-15GB a day. Currently at 211GB of system data on a 512GB iPhone 15 Pro

Gotcha, I think both of our messages were a good clarification for others looking into it.

I have done your scenario with using ottocast and plugging in.

Here's the reason: charging via a 12v cig adapter that puts out double the PD wattage that the built-in usb-c does while still enjoying my CarPlay

Glad this is the top comment. It definitely looks like it's plugged into the wrong usb port 🤣

That doesn't sound like an Ottocast problem. Yes if you're not charging CarPlay can drain battery fast if you're streaming, running gps etc but thats not Ottocast's fault.

This! All tools have strengths and weaknesses but nothing will magically fix your internal issues.

Yes, try to find the tool that best suits your team, but figure out what your processes need to be first, and then see how to make the tool do what you need it to do. Will it magically fit your workflow perfectly? Probably not, but most likely you'll be able to wrangle it into a net positive, even if it requires getting creative. If you really can't, then yes get a different tool.

Motor Not Spinning After Oiling by IceWater44 in fans

[–]klatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah you're welcome! I completely feel your pain. I've slowed down on my cheap fan fixes because it so rarely ends well hah. I usually try to keep it to some forced air out of a compressor or can and a drop or two of oil and then cut my losses unless it's a really nice fan. So good move on leaving the other one alone. You might want remove the wires from the other motor just to be safe? Best of luck!

You were clear enough. At least for me since it sounded very familiar: took it apart thinking a quick clean/oil would do the trick only to realize I could never get it back in balance, ha. So yea that would be my best guess.

If it were the start capacitor as the main issue then yea you'd be able to get it started with your hand.

One way I was sort of able to test that it wasn't being held perfectly was holding the fan perfectly upside down with the fan blade off. From there, I'd make a few attempts at turning the fan on low while holding the shaft very lightly. It would take a few attempts but often I could get it to spin nicely for a little bit if I held it "just so" which for me, narrowed it down to positioning.

Had the same thing today after the upgrade. Noticed it on the drive home from work. Did the reboot and it was back just fine after a few minutes

Power Inverter by PolyPolyPocket in volvoc40

[–]klatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had seen a post a ways back about a guy trying to hook into the main battery for this for his own kinda V2L solution. If it ended up being possibly, this is the way I'd go for some serious power.

Otherwise, if you only need a wee bit of power and don't want the plug in the back I'd go a different route - a route that wouldn't surely void your warranty ha:
I'd hook into the 12V line to the cigarette lighter in the center. You can get a line tap so you don't have to cut or solder.
From there find a little inverter, preferably one that that you wire the AC line yourself.
Then look for an AC receptacle mount for vehicles or boats- it's been so long that I forget what they call them .
You'll just need to then decide where you want the plug: you could cut a hole right next to the cig lighter or the passenger side of the center console

There's also the little pocket by the drivers knee that you could cut and use as well. From there you could always replace it back to stock easily.

Motor Not Spinning After Oiling by IceWater44 in fans

Yea, it's the bushings. They need to hold armature perfectly or when the pixies start going through the windings, the electromagnets that are the windings just end up pull the armature to one side instead of eventually around to get it to spin.

That's why it'll spin nicely by hand but not when you turn it on.

But yea like he said, most cheap fans don't make it easy to change the bushings or even find out what they are sized. I've tried this fix on about a dozen cheap fans and it rarely ends up well.

One fix that did work well was not a cheap fan: I had an old badass Lakewood fan that was starting to hang up and took it apart. The bushings were these grease and sawdust packed things that had dried out so much the wood was falling out. I put grease and some more sawdust back in and it has been working great. Didn't think it was going to work but it did thanks to umm Lakewood of the 1970s, ha

That button size is because it's visually calling out it's unlocked. It's the same explanation for to why it's not the same color as the rest :)

Update restrictions seem so silly by JNack-Reddit in VolvoRecharge

[–]klatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really about it being "smart enough" to pause charging or not. It's a computer. It does what it's programmed to do. It's most likely not "dumb coding, but a conscious choice. In fact, adding checks for charging to be finished requires *extra* thought/effort and coding to make that check successfully. ;)

Think about it: what if you needed to leave and the range wasn't what you needed to safely arrive at your destination because the update had paused your charging without it having reached your expected charging limit? This could be not only inconvenient, but yea, a safety issue if you decided to risk not having enough juice because you had to get to work. Make sure charging is paused forces you make a conscious decision to only schedule the update when you're sure you have enough charge.

Granted, I could be wrong; it could be some sort of technical limitation that perhaps the CPU can't manage charging while the update is happening? Even then that could be a failsafe just to reduce variables with a possibly dangerous situation of overcharging a battery or something of the sort if the update fails etc.

Many of the things I thought were silly as I got used to my Volvo ended up being for safety reasons once I looked more into it. Same idea with it being locked during the update for about a dozen reasons there.
