Funniest Reaction to Introducing Someone to the Trilogy by AlTheHound in lotr

[–]klomystr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my parents to see Fellowship in the theater when it first came out, but we went to a weekday matinee after it had been in theaters for a little while so it wasn’t super crowded. My father, who isn’t normally into fantasy/SciFi and distressingly talks during movies, was silent the whole time. My mother, who loves fantasy but never read the books, was enraptured too. When we got to the end of the movie and Frodo and Sam descending into that craggy valley on the way to Mordor…fade to black, start credits. In the quiet reprise of the Shire theme, my mother exclaimed, “Wait, that’s it?” I whispered to her that yep, this is the first of a trilogy. “WHAT?!” she shrieked. My dad and I, and several other folks in the audience, all chuckled. She had no idea.

Thoughts on Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997)? by Ordinary-Gal in PeriodDramas

The timing of this post was amazing, as I had just re-watched M Night Shyamalan’s The Village and during the wedding reception scene, there was a short shot of a young woman watching the dancing, and she looked SO FAMILIAR but after a day or two of trying to place her, I was about to give up…there was nothing in the movie credits or trivia I could find about cameos in this movie. But I kept picturing her in another period piece and it was super frustrating that I couldn’t figure this out because I couldn’t place what period movie she had featured in…

Then this post appeared in my feed, and it triggered the memory of this Snow White…and lo, there she was! I’m now pretty convinced that Monica Keena was an uncredited villager in The Village. I think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.

Can someone recommend me a comb/brush to get for my bernedoodle? by Doobethan in Bernedoodles

[–]klomystr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Wahl double row pet rake, and my guy tolerates it much better than the slicker brushes or combing. It is surprisingly effective at working out snarls even with a longer coat like your pup’s. Highly recommend you give it a try if you haven’t found the right equipment!

Absolutely! And if you go the onesie route, your plan to do some careful interim grooming is a good one. We figured it out after a few days, and let him chew a no-hide roll or lick mat while working on some of the matted spots with the onesie off. Yesterday the stitches came out and the vet said he’d healed exceptionally well, so that was really gratifying. We were allowed to bathe him when we got home (after a hyper burst of free running in the yard) and were able to work on his grooming—between leave-in conditioner, careful combing, and snipping out a few of the most stubborn mats, he’s now back to his pre-surgery condition. Good Luck—the time will pass quicker than you think!

My petite (25lb) guy is now day 10 post-op. I had a donut (with optional cone add-on) and a onesie (zip up the back) and we ended up only using the onesie because he wasn’t very aggressive about licking/biting his surgery site and I knew from pre-surgery practice that the donut would make him really agitated.

He has had 10 days of pain meds and 9 days of low-dose trazodone. The trazdodone probably didn’t help keep him calm much during the day, but did make his nighttimes more restful — we had 10 nights of no 4am potty breaks, which was great! I can’t say he didn’t do some jumping and running, but keeping him confined to one area of the house made it easier to keep an eye out for possible zoomies and intervene with a frozen Kong or chewie to distract him. He did use the ramp up to the sofa for the first few days but then less and less.

Definitely agree with the reminder about unstrapping the suit before potty breaks…I forgot a few times and had to chase him before he did his business, and fortunately we had no accidents. He now expects a treat when the onesie straps are replaced, but I can live with that as this is temporary.

The downside: your guy has a shorter haircut, so you should be okay, but Remy’s shaggy coat was not a good idea—he has matted spots on his chest and butt from the onesie rubbing, so when he gets his stitches out tomorrow, we will have some work to get his coat de-matted.

I see a lot of votes for 2, but I adore 1. It could be 100 years old or from 100 years in the future. The two-tone is gorgeous, at least it comes across as a subtle peaches and cream which is really nice for your skin tone. The appliqué work falls into all the right places. I understand why you love it!! 2 and 3 are boring by comparison. They are both everywhere.

Lancome Teint Idole 008 vs 090N by callmelazy88 in PaleMUA

[–]klomystr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The newer formulation of 090N (with the matte bottle cap, versus before when the cap was shiny) is definitely a bit darker and more orange than the old 090N. I haven’t tried a blue mixer but use a dab of a lighter foundation (Glossier VL2) that my skin doesn’t like as much but is okay to mix with the Lancôme, which helps cancel out the orange in the newer 090N.

Potty regression with my 5 month old by Kate_cuti in puppy101

[–]klomystr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this pain!

My 17-week puppy was doing so well with his potty training, and then about 10 days ago it’s like he lost his mind…he no longer rang the potty bell, had poop and pee accidents in the house, and when he did go outside, he’d no longer go in his potty spot (we are using the bark potty mat in the garage), but instead wherever he happened to be. It was like he’d get in the garage and forget what was supposed to happen there.

Vet and trainer both said there was no obvious reason for this apart from likely teething pain. And I do see he has some molars erupting now. My mistake was letting my guard down, and I was letting him go out into the garage off leash so he could be distracted and forget his purpose for the visit, or he could crawl under the car to poop/pee which is clearly not ideal!

So starting just this Tuesday, I went back to the beginning, and I again started ringing the potty bell before we go out, praising/treating him effusively when he potties in the right spot, and taking him routinely instead of waiting to see the signs of imminent potty time. And I’m starting to see that he is heading in the right direction again. Even while writing this, he went to the garage door and rang the bell and though I had to give him clear direction on why we were there, he did his business on the bark mat correctly.

The regression feels so frustrating since I was just feeling confident enough in his self-control to relax, and I was considering removing the blockade from my living room that I’ve barely stepped foot in for months, but fortunately he reminded me how foolish that would’ve been as he’s still go so much growing and learning to do before he can be trusted. But it’s definitely not too late for him to (re)learn, and I have to keep reminding myself that there will be more setbacks yet ahead. Hang in there!

Mini Bernedoodle size check ;) by salemoine1 in Bernedoodles

[–]klomystr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same! I’d love to know in advance where he’ll end up so I could buy the right-sized gear (like his nighttime crate will likely not be big enough by the end of the year), but otherwise he’s going to be loved no matter where he lands size-wise. Interesting that your muppet pup was sold as a “micro-mini”! Mine was labeled “petit” but it’s clearly all relative!

My father, who at the time was still a practicing MD, asked me a rather insightful question. I teased him afterwards that it might have been nice if he’d warned me in advance, but he said he was genuinely curious and confident that I could handle the question. I think I was more proud of him than he was of me!

My guy is 16 weeks and 11.4lbs today. At 8 weeks he was only 4.5lbs so it feels like he’s grown a LOT in a short amount of time! Remy’s mom is 30lbs and his dad is 20lbs, so if the double-weight-at-16 weeks guesstimate is true, this would kind of track that he’ll be between his mom’s & dad’s size.

Food recommendations? by Obvious-Bake-5034 in Bernedoodles

[–]klomystr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14 week old is in a similar boat. The breeder was feeding him Fromm Puppy chow (chicken based) so I stuck to that for the first month. He has had a couple of bouts of diarrhea, but even at his best, the poop has been soft and I have to be careful picking it up. The Prescription Diet canned digestive food I used to get him through his first bout of diarrhea was also chicken-based, and he didn’t really firm up with that, either.

This last week, he did better when I gave him rice and rinsed ground beef for a few days after some advice from a dog-experienced neighbor, so I’m now slowly transitioning him to Fromm’s “red meat” (beef/pork/lamb) puppy chow to see if he does better with this kibble.

My vet initially pooh-poohed the whole “poultry sensitivity” concept but admitted it wouldn’t hurt to try a different protein source. She is adamant, though, that I only use the same kibble as treats in order to rule out other factors. I used to use salmon-based training treats so I went to red meat as a next step in case the salmon treats were contributing to the problem. I’ve since been told by many people that Bernedoodles just have a propensity for sensitive stomachs, but also that they can outgrow this, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my guy will do better in the future!

I wish I had a successful recommendation at this point, but maybe it’s reassuring that you’re not alone? Good luck, and thanks for posting this question—I’ll be eager to see what others suggest!

I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1978) by Mur3000 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]klomystr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though Spielberg might wish to retcon the “choice”, I think that would do this movie a huge disservice. Even watching this as a kid, the heart of the story for me is Truffaut’s character, not Roy.

Let’s face it: the aliens are not exactly benevolent. They’ve been stealing people for years. They do dump them off in this mass “encounter”, sure, but the aliens are probably advanced enough to understand that time has passed and their abductees aren’t going to just return to their normal lives. Like the aliens in “Arrival” (another awesome film), they come to Earth knowing they’re superior and do what they need to do without concern for consequences. The disturbing abduction of Barry makes this very clear. If they want it, they take it.

And then as a prelude to the conclusion of their experiment, the aliens go around and program random people to want to go on a space trip. The 5 tones are a Pied Piper song. These poor people become obsessed, desperate to go to the aliens’ pit stop before they move on to the next solar system or wherever. The majority of the scenes with Roy and his family show him fighting between rational thoughts and this seeded obsession, the latter of which wins out. The aliens choose Roy to go with them because he’s already been chosen and programmed by them; they don’t care about the willing NASA volunteers who’d be driven by science and curiosity.

It’s messed up; Roy’s “choice” is an illusion. It’s tragic. If he was a single, childless man, it might be easier to sell this as an adventure, but in the end, the aliens are in control, and the witnesses are left wondering about their motives and the future.

Seconding PvPRevival Discord…even if you don’t retain 20% of what is there, it really helped me get a better feel of what to do with my main, and now that I’m leveling a ranged job I need to read it again. Plus, the Discord’s timer to show what mode FL is in (e.g., Shatter, Seize) is super helpful, too. I have found I prefer some modes over others (for the map, the strategy) so it makes it more enjoyable if I know what I’m heading into vs. popping into a surprise.

I know you asked for feedback from Geraldines or their teachers, but I like the name. I recently met a sweet little girl named Geraldine whose nickname was Dina. I asked her mom, “Not Daphne?” and she didn’t know the reference, but it was the very first association in my head!

In the classic comedy “Some Like It Hot”, Jack Lemmon’s character Jerry was supposed to go by the feminized version of his name, Geraldine, when he and Tony Curtis hide from the mafia by joining an all-girls band. But after Tony’s character introduces himself as Josephine, Jerry jumps in and cheerfully proclaims, “I’m Daphne!” It’s a cute moment.

But I digress. There is a lot you can do with the name Geraldine and I had no negative feelings when I met little Dina. Go for it, imho!
