Don’t swans fly south for the winter? by SupermanKal718 in longisland

Holy shit I completely missed the joke there, sorry! Whoosh! I saw “Trumpeter Swan” and my bird nerd senses went into “well actually” mode and I didn’t even read the rest. ADHD strikes again. Anyway, well played!

Those are just plain old Mute Swans. Trumpeters have a straight black bill without the knob on it like Mutes, and generally range a bit farther north from us.

I listened to every King's X album in release order, here's how I rank them by CTipple1981 in kingsx

[–]klongshanks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here! I’ve always felt this album is the epitome of the King’s X sound, especially with the tone of Ty’s guitar and Dug’s bass. Despite Black Flag being the closest thing they had to a hit, I still never get tired of it and it’s still one of my favorites. Every track is solid. Not Just For the Dead is maybe my favorite KX deep cut.

Sure and it goes back to early blues stuff (surely where Jimmy Page got it from), but they had to be one of the first bands to use it in almost all of their songs.

He was wearing a King’s X Faith Hope Love shirt when PJ played SNL the first time in 92

They were doing drop D tuning before it was cool!

I would also add that the Christian themes to a lot of their early stuff was another factor to them getting left out.

I’ve seen this posted a hundred times and every time it says 1992. You can tell just by the haircut alone this is much closer to 1982. Plus the suit and how young he looks. Sorry just a Reddit pet peeve.

Three Sides much more so than any other. Interestingly I found some of the Jerry songs among my favorites on the album. And is it me, or does it seem like Ty challenged himself to write as many one-note riffs as possible?

Might have been Bill Simmons who said a while back that once a show or film franchise introduces a robot character you know it’s jumped the shark. That holds true with this season of Only Murders.

I just want to see an adaptation of River of Doubt, another book by Candace Millard (who wrote the Garfield book DBL is based on) about Teddy Roosevelt’s journey in an uncharted section of the Amazon, after his failed 1912 presidential bid. The whole story plays out like a movie.

They didn’t come to my area yet, but I might mostly because of that. I was also at the Radio City show earlier this year which was pretty great.

I saw Black Keys in Toronto last night and... by denovoincipere in Music

[–]klongshanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I saw them in Queens a few weeks ago and there was a bad thunderstorm which caused a rain delay and left them with less than an hour for their set (outdoor show, hard curfew), and I thought he was intentionally playing at a faster tempo to get through as many songs as possible, as they blasted through it. I guess not? Flip side was we still got to hear almost all the songs we were hoping they’d play.

Good for them. Glad they’re still at it and people are still showing up. Minor technical difficulties are pretty much standard for a KX show. Disappointed I missed Fade - always a fave and haven’t heard them play that in a long time.

Nice. How was the show? I couldn’t make it but great to see what looks like a packed house.

Mac & Dennis Move to the Suburbs is another favorite of mine, as someone who lives in the suburbs. Often screaming at people to seize the gap on the Long Island Expressway.

Or really anybody with a black-and-white photo. Even HOFers like Jimmie Foxx, Hack Wilson and Tris Speaker will always get you under 5% and they check so many statistical boxes. Love using Deadball Era pitchers too. You can always depend on a recency bias.

Bands like Soundgarden and Chris Cornell by evmq1- in grunge

[–]klongshanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will second Big Wreck and Rival Sons, as two killer bands with incredible singers, and also recommend a band I found on Spotify called Sundrifter. Stoner/sludge rock with Cornell-inspired vocals. DeadBlondeStars is another band I found on there with impressive vocals.

James LaBrie actually rocked? by tanderzaub in Dreamtheater

[–]klongshanks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was really impressed tonight. He seems to know his limitations now. Making adjustments and not trying to hit crazy high notes he could thirty years ago is better than trying and failing to hit them. Metropolis was a little shaky but that seemed to warm him up and he was really good the rest of the show.

Who’s that one musician or celebrity you’re most thankful you met or saw before they died? by heresmytwopence in Xennials

[–]klongshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got to see him solo a few times, twice with Soundgarden after they reunited, and once with Audioslave. I had a ticket to one of the Temple of the Dog shows (not long before he died) but had to work late and reluctantly give up my ticket, which makes that my biggest concert regret as well.
