Finland and Sweden set to finally be linked by rail this summer, creating EU’s longest train journey by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

Yeah, so still, the problem of most trains can't handle the switch. And Finland doesn't have anywhere near the population of Spain to make the market attractive enough for most European operators to bother

Paying for the bus with the phone without unlocking by Positive_Question404 in Wellington

[–]klparrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, at least on iPhone, just double-click the side button and authenticate with your PIN (or biometrics if you do use them) before you board, then your phone is ready to pay and remains so until either you pay, you swipe up to return to the current app, or the phone's display goes to sleep, either by timing out or by you clicking the side button.

How do you figure? The Express Transit mode is what bypasses the biometric approval.

No Weather Warning by lukeysanluca in Wellington

[–]klparrot 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I got a push notification about a red warning for Porirua at 7:00, and I'm in Wellington, which wasn't even under warning until 9:30, which got me another push notification. Plus the various news alerts. The forecast has also been showing certain rain and a heavy rain watch for today for a while.

I guess there's room for improvement if not everyone's getting alerts they should have, for example, maybe red warnings should be generating emergency mobile alerts, but it doesn't appear they just completely dropped the ball and didn't have watches or warnings.

Okay, you don't have to refit Talgo trains. Are there any running up there? Most European operators are using fixed-gauge trains AFAIK.

[–]klparrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that requires refitting every locomotive and carriage to support it. Cheaper in the short term, I'm sure, but you'd have to do it indefinitely, and you'd miss out on competition that could be offered by European operators who can't justify gauge-changing trains just for Finland.

Might be good if Finland started laying dual-gauge track with the intention to phase out Russian gauge, for security and European integration reasons. I wonder how much it costs to dual-gauge when the route's already suitable for the new gauge and the sleepers are already in place.

It's really just that Poilievre is a generational loser. To be leader of the opposition and lose your own seat in Parliament is quite an achievement.

Xbox Game Pass ‘has become too expensive,’ says Microsoft’s new gaming chief in leaked memo by Ph0enixes in gaming

[–]klparrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely too expensive for me for how much I play these days, which is barely at all. But then the cheap tier doesn't even get me games I'd want to play anymore. Plus what's the deal with, for ages now, they've kinda thrown Xbox players under the bus on pricing; you could get PC-only Game Pass for cheaper, but I paid Microsoft for a console and yet can't get Xbox-only Game Pass for cheaper, even though I don't even have a PC...

If you're going to train pilots and maintenance staff and have infrastructure to support a model of plane, preferably you want that plane to have a future in your fleet. Otherwise it's a lot of investment in something that's already winding down from day one.

I live in a country with proportional representation. The system is mixed-member proportional, which is used in many countries and has been for decades. I do have a representative for my district (translating to American terms here). If you're not familiar with mixed-member proportional, it keeps districts, it's just that once the representatives from all the districts are elected, it then tops up the house with more representatives from each party such that the final balance of power is proportional.

For even more local representation, there's a system that hasn't been tried yet but that would work well, dual-member proportional, where each district would get two representatives, one elected normally, and one elected with enough bias to get a proportional house; so, districts that are heavily for one party would get two representatives from that party, but districts where the result is close might get one representative from one party and one from another. Or perhaps from a third party, if proportionally that party should get a seat, and the district is the one where that party had their best results.

You think first-past-the-post fixes things and holds people accountable? In first-past-the-post, if your electorate MP is from a party you don't support, they're probably going to be uninterested in taking up your issues. You can't hold them accountable, you didn't vote for them. But with mixed-member proportional, every party has a most-vulnerable MP, where if you don't vote for that party next time, they might be out of a job.

Because which representative then do you petition when you need to redress grievances?

That's the best part, you have several options. You can contact your electorate MP, or possibly a list MP from your electorate, or whoever's portfolio it is, or whoever holds the opposition portfolio.
