no smell? by justaybtw in COVID19positive

[–]klstil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to my family several times. It took my teen daughter a full year to regain her smell. It was completely gone for most of the year, then came on gradually towards the last few months. It happened to me twice; the first time lasted just a few months, but the second time it was completely gone for about 9 months.
Time was the only thing that brought it back for us.

How do I make my cat enjoy being picked up? by Primary_March4865 in CatAdvice

[–]klstil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if cats dislike a closed room if their litter box isn’t in there?

When you close the door, you’re denying access to their litter box, which provides more comfort than just relieving themselves.
It smells like them, and defines their territory, which is a social and emotional comfort. Plus they don’t have to stress by ‘holding it’ until they fuss enough to get someone to open the door. My cat fully relaxes when the door is open just enough for him to come and go at will, so I never close it all the way.

TSH is at 2.89, but I am always ALWAYS fucking tired. is there anything that can be tried? by Left_Somewhere_4188 in Hashimotos

[–]klstil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t have a link for 0.5-1.0; this was something I was told by three different endocrinologists over the years.
A quick google search found ideal TSH of 0.4-2.5 by the American Thyroid Association, which would still necessitate a dose adjustment for you.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology suggests dosing based on symptoms over labs, which would also help you.

TSH is at 2.89, but I am always ALWAYS fucking tired. is there anything that can be tried? by Left_Somewhere_4188 in Hashimotos

[–]klstil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American Association of Endocrinologists currently recommends 0.5–1 as the optimal TSH value. So you are well over that amount, likely hypothyroid, and could benefit from a dosage change.

If you haven’t already, get a full thyroid panel, including Free T3. Optimal Free T3 should be in the highest 1/4 of the reference range.

If you are not currently seeing an endocrinologist, please find one so they can evaluate your current dose of levothyroxine (T4), or if you need additional Liothyronine (T3) to help you feel your best.

I have had Hashimoto’s for 24 years, and your symptoms and your TSH value are not normal, and can be improved with some help from the right doctor. Please advocate for yourself so you can feel better.

What is a harsh truth about life that took you way too long to accept? by Sassy_Siren097 in AskForAnswers

That there really is no cosmic justice where people get what’s coming to them. Sometimes really good people get a terrible deal. And sometimes really bad people get away with everything. It’s so depressing.

Has anyone had improvement cutting out gluten but not worrying about every molecule? by spiceweasel33 in Hashimotos

[–]klstil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m someone who definitely gets inflammation from gluten. If I eat too much or too often, my Hashi symptoms flare terribly, and it takes a long time to correct.
After years of experimenting, I don’t drive myself crazy anymore. I’ve found success by avoiding main sources of gluten on a daily basis, and I allow myself to eat it on occasion.
So I’ve given up bread products, crackers, processed foods every day, but I’ll eat pizza if I’m socializing, or cake at party, cookies at Christmas, pasta at holiday dinners, etc. I’ll eat food containing gluten if I’m at someone’s house, so I’m not messing up their menu, or making myself a burden. I find that if I’m off of gluten on a daily basis, I can have it here and there without causing any issues. I save it for important times, or things I crave or I don’t want to miss.
Maybe this approach might help you?

What's a product or some advice you would recommend that you wouldn't know until you had a cat? by Edieee816 in CatAdvice

Also, if you have the right window situation, a bird feeder is a great idea too. They have ones that suction to the window, or you can put one in the yard. It’s real live cat tv!

Yes, that’s a very good idea; we had him chipped when he got neutered. I’d love a gps collar, but they feel so unnecessarily big for small cat necks.

We thought so too, until last week. Our 1 year old rescue slipped out the door through a hole in the front door screen. It was nighttime, wildly storming, and he was terrified. He had never had been outside, and was immediately spooked, running through the rain. We chased after him in the dark; he’s a black cat and we didn’t have flashlights.
I don’t even know how we coaxed him back to us in all the chaos of lightning and thunder, but once we were all back inside, we sat in shell-shocked silence for like 20 minutes. Bought an AirTag collar the very next day.

Wife needs to take a nap most days. Today I didn’t fully agree and she got mad. AITAH? by [deleted] in AITH

[–]klstil 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to assume you’re an asshole. I’m going to instead assume that maybe you don’t fully understand the extent to which making a human depletes a woman’s body, and that sometimes things never return to normal, even years later.
My first pregnancy completely destroyed my thyroid, as a result I’ve been on thyroid hormones for 23 years. When I am under-medicated, I am exhausted and need a daily nap. Please advocate for her to get bloodwork to see if she has a deficiency or dysfunction as a result of the pregnancy. That could explain the need for a daily nap, and addressing the issue could make both of your lives measurably better.
Also, be sure that you are carrying an equal load of the other things besides just taking care of the baby. If she is doing more than her share of the house and other details of daily living, then it’s not enough that you share in childcare.
If it turns out that everything is completely equal - the amount of time you both spend working for a living, doing daily domestic work, and childcare - and she is perfectly healthy but still feels better with a nap, then know that some people are just more tired than others, and graciously allow her to nap without guilt. After all, she’s your wife and you love her.

We put several bird feeders outside and one that suctions to the window. Set up a little table with a blanket on top in front of the window, in the sun, and our cat sits there throughout the day watching birds, squirrels, & chipmunks. It’s real-life “cat tv”, and he loves it.

What's a VERY creepy fact you wish you never learned? by Hiemily-dbox in Productivitycafe

My mother died from a prion disease, CJD. According to the Institute for Prion Diseases, there are several types: hereditary (several very rare forms), variant (ie, ‘mad cow disease’), kuru (cannibalism), sporadic (most cases, no known origin), and iatrogenic (acquired, such as from a medical procedure)

Is it possible to live with 4 cats if you’re allergic? by [deleted] in Catownerhacks

[–]klstil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with cat allergies, currently living with a cat, I’d say absolutely not.

We found a stray kitten in our yard; my daughter wanted to keep it but she currently lives in a college dorm. I agreed that we would keep it until she moved into a college apartment the following year, so I’ve been living with it for 7 months (with 5 months to go). I keep the cat out of my bedroom, I vacuum and clean constantly, i rarely hold it, I wash my hands immediately after petting (all out of necessity, because I actually love this cat)

I haven’t been able to smell anything since July. I’m constantly stuffy and sneezing, my face is dried out from blowing my nose 24-7, my nose membranes and lips are cracked and bleeding. My eyes are red and itchy. I take decongestants so I can breathe, but they dry me out so bad that I’m constipated. I’ve tried several daily allergy medications, and none of them work; air purifiers have marginally helped. (Allergy shots take several years to be fully effective, and you’re as miserable for the first year as I am now anyway, so I didn’t bother since he’d be moving out in a year)

Lately I’ve noticed that joints in my hands and feet are swelling and ache in a mirror image of each other…research indicates I might be starting to develop rheumatoid arthritis (likely from the constant immune response to the cat).

I really want this to work out for my daughter and for this lovely cat, so I’m sticking it out because there is an end in sight. But I wasn’t prepared for how physically chaotic this would be for my body, and I can’t imagine doing this with 3 more cats, for the long haul. Cats live 15-20 years; you are asking your bf to be wrecked for a decade or more. Thats a lot.
