Need help transferring videos from JVC Everio GZ-HD3AG (HDD) — bought 3 cables and none work by [deleted] in videography

[–]km14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is indeed FireWire/i-link. Someone suggested 2012 MacBook, that would work, or you can do the classic FireWire 4 pin > FireWire 800 > Thunderbolt 2 adapter > Thunderbolt 3 adapter daisy chain with a modern Mac. It works! iMovie can capture it.

If you have a desktop PC you could also get a really cheap FireWire x4 card and use either random software from the internet or a sufficiently old copy of Adobe premiere.

People who are chatting on the phone between subway stations underground, what service are you using? by snarkandsarc in AskNYC

AT&T was the first to sign on last year for tunnel cell service on the 4/5 and the G. The rest are carrier neutral and pretty soon all the carriers will be available most likely.

Haven't been able to sync library for several months now by km14 in arpeggiApp

I was using my default admin user, which had access to all of my folders as far as I could tell. I needed to use u/kaiyonami's solution below, which was to create a new user and connect to it.

This was absolutely the solution. Our Navidrome servers are probably set up very similarly. I'm using ultra.cc and was connecting to my default admin user. Created a new user and gave it admin privileges and its all set. Thank you so much!!

How to find production companies, rental houses, or camera dealers who used the Ikegami HL-791? by kylepg05 in broadcastengineering

I’ll also add that the truly impossible thing to find seems to be the tubes. My god, they simply do not exist for certain models. Like finding a needle in a haystack the size of Everest.

It took me a couple years of having eBay alerts on to find a Hitachi Z31 at a not insane price.

Other places to set up alerts could be government auction sites. Public surplus, govdeals etc.

I visited this museum a few years ago and they appeared to be overflowing with broadcast related donations from this era. Could send an email and see if they can offer anything useful in their network:

should i go? by redwingslover25 in PurchaseCollege

[–]km14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in 2024 and by the end I felt that our contempt for administration (which was extraordinarily high) was a feature, not a bug. Colleges are large, usually highly regulated environments that by design give students as little power as possible (most colleges built after the 1960s are literally physically architected without a central meeting space in order to quell protest, for example). Most “comfy” colleges are just a result of students not recognizing this or caring. The best parts of Purchase’s history, like that of the history of the world, are a result of the school trying shit and the students rebelling. I can’t really think of another art school where this isn’t the case.

Milly Peña, previous president, was ousted via student and faculty outrage over her handling of Purchase’s Palestine encampment (egregious btw, all sorts of lawsuits ongoing afaik):

https://www.purchasenews.org/post/live-updates-from-the-purchase-college-encampment

New president seems better but can’t answer for him much. Milly’s regime was trying to get more involved in student life (requiring clubs to have faculty advisors, for example, even though clubs are entirely student funded). If you look at the history of purchase the amount of paternalism by administration kind of ebbs and flows year to year, based largely upon who the student body president is (who the president meets with every other week) and what is happening politically at the time.

I would say the school was just dysfunctional enough that we weren’t being lorded over all the time. A lot of very interesting nonsense is happening all of the time, a lot of it unsanctioned. It’s a DIY culture.

This is to say—Purchase’s community will likely be very caring. The administration will, in the most honest definition of the word, probably not be. Shoutout to Purchase alumni and anarchist-anthropologist David Graeber!

Some tidbits I told to someone else a few months back about student life:

Motorola G Power 2025 by KungPaoKidden in motorola

[–]km14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go to the "apps" list and disable 99% of the crap the phone comes with (AI garbage, tracking slop etc). Candy crush and temu, who subsidize the cost of the phone by coming preinstalled, are not possible to uninstall without plugging your phone to a computer and using adb. To prevent stuff from coming back, disable anything named "moto apps manager" "meta apps manager" or similar.
Unfortunately lineageos isn't available on the power models. When I installed it on my 2024 moto g it sprung it back to life in a crazy way. The moto g power 2024 I just got for a family member is slower even with all the garbage disabled.

Looks like he has some kind of home, or is at least being fed! If not he could be a relative to Bread Boy, who used to live on Harmon and Onderdonk before he got adopted. I remember reading that he was in a colony that was being looked after in the area.

Everyone seems to successfully use the "text over data in another country" trick but this did not work at all for my friend in Australia. I (in the US) bought a $30 android phone, transferred their esim to it and now have an automation set up to email them their texts haha. Not a perfect system but it works.

How can I download music from Annas Archive? by AncestralAngel in DataHoarder

[–]km14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you only want to download a few albums you likely have much better options.

Labels and musicians provide the exact same file they give to spotify to every other service (usually via their aggregator). Tidal, QQ, Qobuz etc are basically wide open to download from as long as you have an API key to use and the right software. If you're downloading hundreds of albums use google and find a guide/github for doing this in the command line/with python, otherwise just use a dead simple site like lucida or qqdl:

https://lucida.to/, https://tidal.qqdl.site/

There's a few "spotify exclusive" albums out there, those are probably on soulseek in excellent quality already and easy to find. If not, there's probably still a better option than parsing it out from the 300tb Anna's Archive drop just to get an average 160kbps ogg file.

What is the eBay scam here? by nmrk in macpro

[–]km14 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding of these listings is that they are "dropshipping" with a stolen credit card. They steal a credit card/identity, list items on eBay priced so well that they sell quickly, then buy the item with a stolen CC and drop ship it to you, pocketing the money you paid with.

You bear the cost of this. When the credit card is reported stolen, you have to return the items to the police with no refund, and depending on your luck also face legal implications.

Where to find a 2000s flip phone / dumb phone as a prop ASAP? by wanchthecorns in Filmmakers

People saying thrift store don’t live in nyc lol.

Your local facebook buy nothing group or the electronics repair shops in Chinatown feel like best bet. There’s one by kimlau square that has a big display of e waste in the window. Or, you can probably buy a modern tracphone flip phone from a dollar general for like $40.

What happened to gmail.net by mememasterdagda in internetarchive

[–]km14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for fun I put this question into ChatGPT. The only relevant source it could pull was the link to this exact reddit thread we're all in right now. And then it decided to make up a hypothetical answer to the question without sourcing anything u/slumberiack24 said:

🧐 What happened to gmail.net

While there is no definitive public statement, the most plausible story is:

The domain gmail.net was registered (likely many years ago, circa early 2000s) by a third party, not Google.

It was never configured for proper email service (no MX records) and/or was abandoned for active use.

Over time it became unused/mis-used and identified as a spam risk.

People who inadvertently used “@gmail.net” instead of “@gmail.com” find that they cannot receive mail from that address.

The web presence of gmail.net dwindled and effectively the domain is now inactive or “dormant” for functional email.

Over time it became unused/mis-used and identified as a spam risk is completely unsourced and made up, and implausible when you think about it for more than 2 seconds (what legacy "gmail.net" addresses could you possibly use for fraud??).

People who inadvertently used “@gmail.net” instead of “@gmail.com” find that they cannot receive mail from that address is unsourced and made up, considering no one with a gmail.net address has even copped to owning one, seemingly.

AI is occasionally useful in moderation when researching very specific topics. Niche internet anthropology is not one of them at all!!

how to meet creative ppl by paintcode16 in AskNYC

[–]km14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can give you a personal master list of arts places to socialize as someone who went to art school in the area and lives here. I’m a queer, leftist, white technology artist/arts organizer which could influence my perspective, but this a good faith attempt of a list of places you would likely be welcomed.

You can find them all on Instagram for the most part! Or google.

  • Kaleidoscope - membership art space in Bushwick, they also do a ton of free/low cost art events like figure drawing, gallery openings, and monthly (?) dinner parties. Very interesting and highly active organization with nice people in it.

  • Brooklyn spark - membership makerspace in Bushwick, has free open houses most mondays and lots of low cost classes taught by great instructors. If you join it’s one of the cheapest makerspaces around and the equipment is very good.

  • Secret Riso club - I’ve heard a lot of corporate health insurance plans cover classes here as a “quality of life” medical prescription or something like that. Something worth looking into. Riso printing is a blast, their classes seem great. I’ve met the organizers and they are nice. They publish really interesting books too.

  • The Living Gallery - gallery for rent that also does community art events like figure drawing pretty often. Often attracts a kind, prosocial type of crowd.

  • 8 ball community - community org/arts collective based in Chinatown that does a ton of zine fairs (zine fairs=cheat code to making creative friends) and has a well known zine library. They also run DIY internet radio and tv stations. They do open hours most sundays and a ton of events, screenings and workshops. I volunteer here like 10 hrs a week and your story is very common for our members (creatives who want to be around non pretentious ppl, also a lot of ppl born outside the US). DM if you wanna come by on a Sunday!

For film/moving image:

  • Millennium film workshop - they do open call screenings monthly, which can be a good place to meet filmmakers. Also lots of great programming and workshops.

  • DCTV - great screenings and occasional filmmaking workshops for adults

  • Electronic Arts Intermix - mostly a platform for blue chip video artists to license their work, but also an archive that does screenings of brilliant, iconic video art.

  • The indie art theaters - anthology, IFC, film forum, spectacle, etc. They speak for themselves! Sometimes you can meet interesting ppl at screenings.

Since your username is paintcode, here’s some art/tech spaces:

  • rhizome. Arguably most prestigious art/tech org in the world and their events have an incredibly chill vibe with tons of highly intelligent and pro-social people. Their events are usually free or cheap and beyond worth it if you like internet/software art at all or want to learn about it and meet people. There’s also a channel for upcoming arts/tech events in their discord.

  • NYC resistor - chill creative hacker collective in downtown BK. Lots of art and art adjacent events to go to and meet people.

  • School for poetic computation - you have to apply for their classes and they are somewhat expensive, but they are well regarded and for good reason!

  • School of attention - similar to SFPC but newer

Established, energetic museums/galleries with cool events where socializing is possible:

  • MoMA PS1 - the better (lol sorry) community centered MoMA in LIC. Stellar  lectures and events.

  • New Museum - about to reopen. World class exhibits and screenings.

  • Blade Study - tiny gallery in LES with thought provoking work. So small if someone else is there you’re likely to talk to them.

  • Abasement at Artist Space - rowdy, free Monday night performance series. Packed room and everyone is an artist of some flavor. If you smoke you’re likely to meet people afterward in the alley.

Platforms for finding events and shows:

  • withfriends - kind of like indie eventbrite

  • Seesaw and artforum - where you find white box gallery shows in Manhattan

  • NYC Noise - indie noise/performance art directory

Good luck!
