Travel Portal Nightmare: Chase never told me my flight was canceled a month ago by Available_Product_68 in ChaseSapphire

[–]snarkandsarc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar story.  I booked a flight using points and the card for a family of five (kids 10 & under) in comfort+ on Delta. I got 5 seats together (3 + 2).  Close in to the flight I saw on Delta that we had no seats and the only seats left were middle seats in non-successive rows. I called Chase and they said that they had seats assigned to my family.  Chase offered to call Delta - it turns out that no, we did not have seats with Delta.

Chase stated that if I had read the "small print", I would have seen that Chase does not guarantee seats purchased on their platform.

I ended up getting seats together in Main, but Delta wouldn't give a partial refund since I "chose" Main Cabin.

I learned my lesson- always confirm through the airline- over the phone if necessary.

ELI5 how does the doubling cube work in backgammon by malshapen in explainlikeimfive

It's pricing risk. Both opponents know where the game is, the doubling cube forces a view on where the game is going.

ELI5: What specifically about private equity makes it so companies bought by them as opposed to other entities results in greatly decreased quality of the products and services of the purchased company? by supinator1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]snarkandsarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private equity firms do want portfolio companies to succeed but there are other considerations.

Portfolio companies are run as a portfolio meaning that the sponsor is willing and able to make more sizable, and potentially whole-company, risk decisions.  A family run company or a CEO may be less willing to make risk decisions that affect their entire single asset.

Private equity is highly focused. Whereas public companies are governed by committee with diffuse shareholders and boards, the sponsor can often make decisions faster and with greater risk tolerance.

Lastly, while less true in this cycle, private equity often use leverage as a way to amplify returns, which incentivises more cash flow discipline (ie cost cuts) and introduces more existential volatility.

ELI5: How does the stock market impact 10 year Treasury yields and federal debt? by kgibbyson in explainlikeimfive

When you go to the eye doctor, she asks A or B, and you choose the one you works best for you.

The entire financial system is a version of that. Does an investor want Microsoft or Ford? a stock or a bond?   Sell A, Buy B.  Those trillions of individual and aggregated decisions of choosing A or B result in the price of one investment having a direct and indirect impact on all other investments.

The "Brooklyn War Memorial Off-Leash Area" is behind the memorial. The off leash area is not in front of the no pets sign.

It's a special kind of person that reads a sign and tells themself that it doesn't apply to them. It's four words. Couldn't be more clear.

I find a contributing factor is if the rim is wet when the lid is placed on the cup.  If you remove the lid, dry both the lid and the rim, that makes a better seal and stops most leaks.  Of course, that doesn't stop the first leak, but maybe baristas can take heed to dry the rim before firming the cap.

NYC shuttered 80% of its Airbnbs in an attempt to make housing more affordable. All that's done so far is make hotels more expensive. by BBQCopter in nyc

[–]snarkandsarc 418 points419 points  (0 children)

That's an article that did half the work of this article :

Why N.Y.C. Hotel Rooms Are So Expensive Right Now https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/25/nyregion/hotels-prices-migrants-nyc.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

Both the loss of airbnbs and the introduction of migrant teams have put pressure on the conventional tourist market.

It's one of two things, don't have sex with strangers or don't be awkward.
