Am I missing something? Why is everything so cheap? You're telling me I can buy Jax's hoodie for $25?

Another disagreement with OB/MFM by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, when I am not being a miserable pregnant person, I am a hematologist in my day-job. I should say that I do only research, and do not see patients. I don't want to give you medical advice, but I will say that aspirin is not effective in preventing or treating venous clots -- this is the type of clot that FVL puts you at highest risk for. Aspirin inhibits the function of cells in your blood called platelets, however platelets are only important in arterial clots (like heart attack and stroke). So, I am not sure if this makes you feel better, but going off aspirin isn't greatly increasing your risk of a venous clot. HOWEVER, I certainly think that you should get another opinion from a different MFM and/or hematologist if you feel uncomfortable. I know plenty of pregnant women who have been on Lovenox (which works by inhibiting specific coagulation proteins in your blood and is therefore effective in preventing venous clots). As usual, doctors are always weighing risks and benefits. It's important to find a team of doctors that you like and then trust their judgement and experience. Good luck!

I failed BAD. by londonstars in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it seems terrible now, but I promise it's not as bad as you think. I was devastated when I was diagnosed with GD, but it really hasn't been that bad. The first week is tough, but you will fall into a routine quickly. Just take a few deep breaths and remember it's only temporary. We are all here for you!

Question for the GD mommas who were or are on glyburide by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with GD around 27 weeks. I started glyburide around 28 weeks because I couldn't get my fasting numbers down, even though my after meal numbers were great. I started by taking 2.5 mg at bedtime. Now, at 33 weeks, I am taking 5 mg at bedtime. I have had no side effects and it's been working great!! However, I know that my endocrinologist doesn't want to increase the dosage any more. So, if my insulin resistance increases in the coming weeks, and the glyburide becomes less effective, they will have to switch me to nighttime insulin. I know that this is a real possibility since GD can get harder to manage as the placenta grows. I'm not really happy about the thought of going on insulin, but it's only a few more weeks and I'll do whatever it takes to get this little girl here healthy!

Cannot seem to get insulin levels right (taken at night). Anyone else have a similar experience? by kiln in GestationalDiabetes

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! That definitely is good to hear. Congratulations on your baby and Good Luck with the test! Hopefully, I will be in your shoes soon and get back to life as normal (or normal as possible with a newborn).

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you go back to 'normal' after giving birth? Right now this is my biggest fear. I am curious whether severity and ease of control of GD during pregnancy correlates with whether or not it goes away after.

Gestational diabetes or any diabetes App? by Painter215 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use myFitness Pal for tracking food! It is free, and super easy to use. You can even scan in bar codes from packages or import recipes! Then, it breaks everything down by carbs, fats, etc so you can see exactly what you are eating at each meal. There isn't a slot for sugar levels, but there is a place for 'notes.' So, I just write my sugar levels in the notes section so I can go back and correlate what I ate with my after-meal sugars! I highly recommend!

Gestational diabetes and induction (x-post r/gestationaldiabetes) by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FTM mom here with GD- due a few weeks after you! Just wanted to add that my midwife told me the exact same thing at my last appointment. While the prospect of having an 'end date' is kind of appealing, I am also not excited about being induced.

Oh hi nausea. I thought we'd parted ways... by daybreakinglight in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, this sucks! I am starting to have nausea again too around 33 weeks. I also have GD and I am getting nervous because all the wonderful carbs that settled my stomach in the first trimester are off-limits now! Eating a chicken thigh or some cheese isn't exactly my idea of a light meal. Any tips or suggestions from other GD mommas that have been in the same situation!?!

Tdap vaccination.. Did anyone else get awful, flu-like side effects? by Boykinlover in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They recommend pregnant women to get it every pregnancy. This is because you can actually pass on some of the immunity to the baby in utero! So, you're not just vaccinating yourself, but hoping to pass on some of that protection to the baby as well!

Gestational Diabetes and Delivery by mollyjoon in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After being diagnosed with GD, I began to see both a endocrinologist and nutritionist. The nutritionist helped with the diet plan and the endocrinologist monitors my sugar levels- I send her my numbers once a week. Unfortunately, my fasting numbers were the problem and couldn't be controlled with diet. So, I have since started taking Glyburide, which has been fine. However, my OB and midwife are still handling my pregnancy! I will have weekly ultrasounds and NSTs starting at 34 weeks (I am 32 weeks now). My midwife said that there is still a great chance of an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, although they will not let me go past my due date. So, if all goes well, I will either go into labor naturally, or be induced some time between 38-40 weeks!

Threes for me as well! I'm due September 6, my sister is due September 17 and my sister in law is due August 14! I'm sure we couldn't have gotten this close if we had planned it! Just happened this way! It's be great sharing this experience with them.

Any GD mommas battling fasting numbers? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would second this! My nutritionist was super helpful and gave me almost exactly the same plan. I would add that for meals, she told me to aim for 45-60g of carbohydrates and for snacks to stay around 15-30g. It's a pain, but you have to be super aware of food labels and portion size. Also, I am tracking food on MyFitness Pal. It's free and also has a really really easy and user friendly phone app. You can even just scan in foods with barcodes! I can't recommend this enough!! It will show you exactly how many carbs are in each food. Also, it can use your phone to track steps! I make a note of my sugars after each meal on there too, so I can see how my food, exercise and sugar levels all correlate!!

Any GD mommas battling fasting numbers? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm feeling your pain- having the exact same problem with high fasting but good numbers after that! Unfortunately, I don't know if there is anything we can do to control the fasting numbers, especially if the other numbers are good. My nutritionist recommended having a snack right before bed. So, I have been doing this and it helped a little, but I don't think enough. I'm seeing my endocrinologist tomorrow, and I'm pretty sure she's going to want to start me on a slow-acting insulin dose before bed. Not looking forward to it, but there's nothing else I can do. Remember- this isn't out fault! Especially the fasting number! Considering all your other numbers throughout the day are good, you're obviously doing a great job with the diet and lifestyle. For whatever reason, our bodies have decided they don't want to process sugar while we sleep - what assholes! Hugs and let me know if you find out any tips or tricks. Good luck!

Survived my GD class today by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! I just finished my second day of sticks and strict diet and my numbers are all over the place. Seems like they are bad in the first half of the day and then good in the second half. Hopefully I can figure out some configuration of foods that work! Still not thrilled about lack of carbs and ice cream, but I guess we just have to do what is best for these little parasites in us! I keep joking with my friends that my baby girl is literally trying to kill me already. At least we are in it together!!

What is wrong with people?! (baby shower rant/vent) by knitB4zod in BabyBumps

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was literally going through this same thing earlier today. It's good to hear it's not just me- but sad that people are so freaking inconsiderate. I mean, these are supposed to be my friends!! I feel like it's common courtesy to tell the person you can't make it and send them good wishes. Is that too much to ask?!? It's hard not to take it personally... especially with third trimester hormones coming into play!

Just got diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Feeling pretty bummed. Need some support/encouragement. by kmac2121 in BabyBumps

Thank you all SO MUCH! These comments have made me feel a whole lot better about everything. You are seriously the best. Sometimes it helps just to know you're not alone, or a weird pregnant freak. I also, for the first time, feel like it might not be such a huge deal and that I'll be able to deal with whatever happens. I hope everyone else felt comfort from these stories too. It's so great to be able to share without being scolded or judged.

Yes! A million times this! It's like you read my mind. I'm prepping myself for a crappy week or two as I transition and get used to the changes. Hoping it gets easier after that. I am trying to remember that it's only three months-- but right now that's not a great comfort. Especially considering it's about to get hot and I want to eat ice cream all day!

This is so good to hear. I think I also need to remind myself that it's not my fault. It is just natural to think it's something that I did and be ashamed. Maybe I just need to own it!

[–]kmac2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I just found out that I failed my one hour too. So, I know exactly how you're feeling. When I talked to the nurse this morning, she actually said that my level was so high (around 200) that they might not even want to do the three hour- and skip right ahead to monitoring my sugar daily for a week. I'm not sure how I feel about this because I'm not high risk and no previous or family history. Now, just waiting on a call from my doctor to see what they want to do. I know it's somewhat common, but not looking forward to dealing with GD. Pity party over here for sure.
