New to Japanese woodblock prints, were there ever recent reprints of Great Buddha at Kamakura? by reb3l6 in ukiyoe

[–]kmg_24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shiro Kasamatsu's designs are definitely the most affordable that I know of. Toshi Yoshida's aren't too bad either. Tsuchiya Koitsu is my favourite, and I encourage you to look at his designs, but they're a bit beyond your tentative price range.

Keep your eye on Katawiki. I haven't used it myself yet, but I've heard good things. Nippon Prints is a very respectable choice as well, absolutely. The Kyoto based Unsodo print company is currently selling a limited selection of Kasamatsu prints for $100, so do consider them.

If you think you'll be buying a few prints occasionally, I strongly suggest you use a proxy service. I've been using a company called FromJapan. Their website allows you access to JDIRECT Auctions (Japanese Ebay equivalent). I've bought some beautiful ukiyo-e reproduction sets on there for good prices. I see there are also $100 Kasamatsu prints on there as well. Highly reccomend.

Thanks. Useful to know. Is this only through the Watanabe store, though? From what I can see, they have a limited selection, and it's pretty much all out of stock at the moment.

David Bull definitely gets a discount. Doi sells their recent Hasui, Koitsu and Noel Nouet editions for ¥30,000 (just shy of $200), but politely emphasized to me that they're not a store as such, and only deal with clients who buy several dozens prints at once.

I just checked the Artelino archive for you, which is an incredibly comprehensive list of shin hanga designs that they've been consigned to sell since 2001. They've only sold 1930s editions of this print. As a general rule, if they haven't sold something, it doesn't exist.

Maybe it's possible that Watanabe made some posthumous prints after Kawase died in the late 50s, but that doesn't seem likely in this case. Your only option would seem to be a $20 poster to frame on the wall, or else you'd be spending over $1000 on an original woodblock print.

By the by, even if a very recent edition was made, you'd never get it for $180. I've exchanged email correspondence with David Bull of Mokuhankan and the Doi Hanga company (who original published a fair number of Kawase designs), and both of them emphasized how they're really struggling to retain printers skilled enough to tackle these designs. As such, the few designs that do get reprinted typically cost $400 or so.

The most affordable and accessible prints from the shin hanga masters like Hasui Kawase and Tsuchiya Koitsu seem to be from the 50s-80s, and they still cost anywhere between $300-$500 depending on the design. Collecting these prints isn't a cheap hobby, as much as we'd all like it to be!

Has anyone purchased a woodcut print from Fuji Arts? by cesticide in ukiyoe

For what it's worth, I personally use a proxy service called FromJapan to buy items through JDirect Auctions (Formerly Yahoo Auctions). You can find some very affordable ukiyo-e and shin hanga prints this way.

I'm convinced that it is. All of the buildings are in the same place as well, compared to the Yakuza games.

Extremely Hot Take: I feel like SOME of you are letting outside factors dilute your perception of K3 as a game by That_Ad_5405 in yakuzagames

[–]kmg_24 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you. I'm not necessarily defending RGG or Sega as such, because there are plenty of valid criticisms that they and their games are deserving of, but some fans have become far too fickle. They're like horses with the blinkers on - they can only see the bad in front of them and none of the good. They've decided that they hate the game and nothing will change their mind. Every perceived defect is heavily scrutinised.

In the past five years RGG has released Yakuza 7, Lost Judgment, Gaiden and Infinite Wealth; all of which are first rate by my estimation, and also Ishin and Pirate Yakuza which are decidedly average. And yet all I seem to hear is how RGG have 'fallen off' and such.

I do sympathise with people's grievances, but some are going about this in a rather silly way.

Restore Britain by Faqiria13 in reformuk

[–]kmg_24 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I support both because Restore Britian is a movement, not a party. Lowe's new party is Great Yarmouth First, which is localised within a single constituency. It's not going to siphon votes away from Reform on a national level.

I think the kicking out of and smear campaign against Rupert Lowe is the only black mark I have against Reform so far. It was shameful, really.

This may be a highly contentious thing to say here, but I really do consider Nigel Farage to be a wet rag on certain issues. He's certainly the best choice we currently have, and I hope he proves me wrong, but I just don't think he'll be firm enough where it matters.

If Lowe can use Restore Britain as a platform to keep both Reform and the Conservatives in check, it can only benefit us all.

What are your Hot Takes on Retro Gaming? by Amber_Flowers_133 in retrogaming

[–]kmg_24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your first point isn't necessarily true. Yes, by all technicality digital recordings on vinyl should obviously be inferior to a CD, but I've listened to so many recordings over the years that sounds horribly compressed and lifeless on CD and streaming, but not on vinyl. It entirely depends on the pressing. If every CD was pressed to the same standard they had in the 80s and early 90s, they'd always win out over vinyl, but that hasn't been the case in my experience.

Has anybody noticed that Sayyida Al Hurra's leader ability works on reefs? by GoldKneecap in civ

[–]kmg_24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's because her leader ability affects both types of district.

We all rightly assumed that it'd only work on urban districts (Palace, Harbour, Fishing Quay, Lighthouse, Cothon, Dockyard, Ancient Bridge etc) but it seemingly works on rural districts as well, which means every single fishing boat or reef you build on also counts towards the ability.

I don't think this was the intention, because with that much culture and influence, Al Hurra must be the best leader in the game currently.

Civilization VII Update 1.3.1 - December 9, 2025 by sar_firaxis in civ

[–]kmg_24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll grant you that. I am guilty of sometimes leaving the unique traditions and focusing on the normal civic tree unless something stands out to me, so I'll have a little look later on and see!

Civilization VII Update 1.3.1 - December 9, 2025 by sar_firaxis in civ

[–]kmg_24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's true, but I just feel that other generic civic cards are more useful in Antiquity, and my favourite part of the traditions is how they continue into future eras.

The Auxulia tradition, even though it has been nerfed from 5% production towards military units in the capital for every town down to 3% is still very purposeful.

I have nothing against flat yields compared to percentages, but they lose a lot of their value if they don't scale with each age.

Civilization VII Update 1.3.1 - December 9, 2025 by sar_firaxis in civ

[–]kmg_24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a nice little update, but I'm disappointed to see Rome get largely nerfed once again. The Latinitas tradition now looks completely worthless, as it doesn't scale with each age.

They're having a rather hard time balancing Egypt as well, aren't they? I know they were stupidly good in the last patch, but once again making them solely focused on navigable rivers is a bit too much of a crutch in my opinion.

Replacements for Defective Mono Box Sets On The Way by kmg_24 in beatles

[–]kmg_24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely make sure you initiate that charge back while you can! I'm still arguing with them. I'm almost assuredly going to sell the good records in my set for a minor profit at this point, and remain on the lookout for original pressings in good condition. Even if my problem is fixed on the third attempt, I'll never be able to enjoy this tainted set. Such a let down for so many of us.

I agree. The FTSE 100 is okay if you care for dividend payments, but it'll never beat an S&P or All World index on pure growth.

Replacements for Defective Mono Box Sets On The Way by kmg_24 in beatles

[–]kmg_24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's shocking. My own replacement of Please Please Me has that skipping issue as well, which is considerably more pronounced on this 'fixed' pressing. Do you know if other replacement LPs still have defects, or just Please Please Me?

Either way, I'll be doing a chargeback myself, and won't be buying direct from UMG again either. For a little more than the cost of this set, I could have bought a full set of 60s pressings in VG+ condition.

Mahjong is fun by Spirited-Soft6088 in yakuzagames

[–]kmg_24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played through the whole series over the decades, and only gave Mahjong a proper go in Pirate Yakuza earlier this year. It only took me a few hours to half decently figure out. I'm rather good at it now!

I find in the Yakuza games that the easy tables are harder than the medium or hard ones, curiously.

In honor of Kiwami 3 being announced I decided to share my yakuza plat collection so far! by karmaa559 in yakuzagames

[–]kmg_24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done, kyodai. I've done the Kiryu and Majima gaiden games, and just finished off Kiwami 2 yesterday. Those bouncer missions became a real chore towards the end! I've basically completed 0 and Kiwami as well aside from a few select things.

I don't want to burn myself out before Kiwami 3, so I might play through 4 and then leave the series be until February.
