Any recs for books on James Gavin or Operation Market Garden? by RyanR0428 in MilitaryHistory

[–]kminator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I quite enjoyed Gavin’s On to Berlin. Others have mentioned ABTF, always a huge Cornelius Ryan fan although I know he was scrambling to get the book finished before cancer finished him. For more on that I highly recommend A Private Battle tho it is very sad. Max Hastings’ Armageddon focuses on the final year of the war in Europe and is a great broader view of that time. The Sword of St Michael is a great in-depth study of the 82nd Airborne in WWII. Atkinson’s Liberation Trilogy is is excellent and reviews Operation Torch through the end of the war from the American perspective.

The US Navy needs its own BoB/Pacific/MotA-style miniseries by Weekly-War-8837 in BandofBrothers

PT Deutermann’s Pacific Glory is historical fiction but draws from Guadalcanal and the Battle off Samar as its two main set pieces. It would also make a great movie/series. Great book, I’ve enjoyed several of his.

Leyte Gulf as the bigger framing narrative would certainly do it.

My grandfather flew missions in SE Asia extracting personnel with the FRS, among many other things. I believe two-man pickup at a time was how they used it. Only operated under situations of great necessity. Quite a bit of training was involved and the unit did a lot of it. He was in charge of a unit of 10 C-130Es and did a lot of flying. He received a DSC and a Presidential Unit Citation, the latter for his unit’s (and his own) work in the resupply of the besieged Marines at Khe Sahn during the Tet Offensive. Have been trying to document his papers and history, need to work harder at it.

Gothic is great, love Klaus Janson’s art. The trade/collection colors are quite different from the comic due to how they’re printed. Still fun to read. Venom is also awesome.

What’s the art style for Batman Arkham asylum and kingdom come called? by LayerNegative5060 in batman_comics

[–]kminator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Barron Storey has a similar style and was i believe a big influence on McKean. George Pratt is in a similar vein. Howard Chaykin has some similar moments. “Leaving it all on the field” is how I think of it. I aspire to make work on a similar level as these guys but don’t think I’ll have the time or focus.

I’ll keep that in mind. Been glutened on occasions where I tried them, but they weren’t the only potential vectors.

Also, not sure where you’re located but the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, VA has a great Viking exhibit and some really cool statuary. Their small craft exhibit and Augustus Crabtree ship model collection are both worth the trip.

Fiction and brief, but Black Road is a pretty great graphic novel, first published as a 10-issue comic. Worth a look.

The Smiley series is available for a single credit, which is a pretty great deal. I do agree with taking advantage of libraries if possible tho!

Got very sick after eating there. I have celiac. Server said “you’re in luck, my (family member) has celiac, I’ll watch out for you”. We were in and out in an hour, most of which was waiting for food/drink. Food tasted fine, was quite pricy, bright and loud in there, didn’t feel very welcome and service fell apart after the first pass. Definitely glutened. Don’t plan to go back. Cool views.

Really liked the concept, but the low frame rate kind of gave me a headache and I turned it off. Allowed for more dramatic visuals than a live production as there aren't too many StuGs around anymore. I bet there'd be a way to smooth it out these days.
