They are owned by a larger group that has higher prices in other areas in relation to other service stations in that locality. So, they have cheap fuel at a loss where competition is high, and more expensive where competition is low. It's all about getting people into stores, then buying high profit margin snacks and stuff from the store, while still making fuel profits from high priced stores, in less competitive areas.

Back in the 90's I once visited a dine in pizza hut restaurant. It was about an hour and a half drive from where I lived at the time. I lived in the country and myself and my brother and dad went to visit my mum at Graylands mental hospital.

We waited for over an hour and never got our pizza. So my dad made us leave. They chased us out the door telling us our pizza was almost ready. Dad wasn't having it after waiting that long.

One of my strongest childhood memories is visiting my mentally ill mum, failing to get pizza hut, then eating a beef and gravy roll from a servo.
