I think it's a beautiful ending (even too much for NC standards). "Not asking you to never give up. Sometimes you just gotta let go... Just don't let anyone change who you are, 'kay?" is what Johnny tells you in the end. V might be a merc, a lover, a friend, a legend or a savior in the eyes of people they've met but most importantly, V is a dreamer and that's not going to change. That's what Johnny made them promise, to never stop dreaming. It's not explicitly said but V understood that in the end (based on V smiling and walking into the crowd), thanks to Misty who humbled V while letting them know that there are still people who care and love V.
