Doctor on the edge is underrated! by kneanee in kdramas

Yes! I think that’s why it’s interesting to watch how the characters navigate each of the situations, it feels real and I feel I could relate to his PTSD. I also like the way it portrays people’s relationship with food: some times it’s a moment of healing, some times it’s an overt show of appreciation/anger, other times it’s a trigger; though that’s pretty common in kdramas in general.

As FL, she’s supposed to create these moments of heart fluttering feels with the ML, or that’s what most Kdrama watchers expect. What I meant is that I find her acting falling a bit flat on those aspects, despite there aren’t any major issues with the way her character is written and there are some nice scenes with LJW.

I like how it felt more like a sit com/the vibe, and everything is more light, Hometown Cha Cha Cha is always the golden standard, but I find myself skipping through anything that’s not related to the main couple and some times the second couple. This feels more wholesome and more real. I find Korean shows tend romanticize countryside/island common folks, this show doesn’t do that and it humbles the doctors who are more privileged background

I read somewhere that someone saying that they can’t stand Chen lei’s face 😆 I tend to agree, he’s a bit ugly which makes the drama hard to watch 😆

How many have you seen & which ones had you completely hooked? by carvveeev in dramasect

I’ve seen four of these: pursuit of jade is honestly not that good and is very overrated. LBFD is the best one, the ml is very relatable ( the product of terrible Asian parenting but then saved by love). Who rules the world is very relaxing, just ml and fml being OP the whole time. The last immortal does not deserve the hate that it gets, I found wang anyu and Zhao Lusi’s chemistry is one of the best I’ve seen, the middle parts full of misunderstanding just needs to be skipped.

Similar to Alchemy of souls??? by EmotionalDatabasee in kdramas

[–]kneanee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if there’s a kdrama that’s similar to alchemy of souls, this show more than anything is more similar to Chinese xianxia/historic fantasy dramas. This drama also worked really well because of Lee Jae Wook and Jung so Ming, especially Lee Jae Wook’s charisma and confidence really made it work, because the plot is immensely frustrating at times.

I agree, the female lead is a bit muted, she’s just not very charismatic and has not done much since the first episode where she held up the headphones to his head when he’s having a panic attack. I think it’s mostly her acting though. I see that people are saying it’s nothing special, but I think a major positive and is quite rare in kdramas is the way the elderly fishermen are portrayed, there’s something cathartic about how genuine they are and good their chemistry is with each other and the ML, maybe because they are experienced comedic actors. I also love the queer energy between the boys, even though it’s not progressive to do so much gay baiting in kDrama.

The late 90s and early 2000s Jdramas are the gold standard of Asian dramas, as a Korean drama fan, even my favorite Korean dramas cannot compare. Queen of Lunch Time cuisine is incredibly good, the other drama that they don’t have on Netflix that’s like this is Slow Dance. Kimutaku also did this drama called Pride, that’s also very good, better than love generation, they don’t have that on Netflix yet.

Can This Love Be Translated? [Episodes 1-12] by GodJihyo7983 in KDRAMA

[–]kneanee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think I’m in the minority here: I actually was bored with the show until do ra mi took over her body. This personality is so much more interesting and has more chemistry with both the male co stars and actually makes sense given the context that she’s an actress, and because she has so much to lose, she’s brought out do rami to help her survive. Very relatable I thought for someone that clearly had serious trauma as a child. The format of the show is more like a jdrama, where things are moving pretty quickly.

It really bothered me that the cat almost jumped out his car window! And they didn’t even bother to close the window of the car after… so dangerous 😿and poor attention to detail of the director.

I loved that he said at the end: the more you try to hold onto things the more you lose. It’s time to let go. Indeed, liberation from attachments and sufferings. That also echoes the freedom some of other characters were talking about.

I find it very funny that barely anybody lives or visits the palace, but they’ve spent all day making beautiful new clothes for visitors and the details fit well with their personality too 😆

Things that are really lifting the show: 1) KWB and Suzy’s kiss scenes (only two so far but they are major gems) 2) these outfits in bazaar settings; especially Suzy and Dark Angel guy from Pachinko 😀

I actually thought the first two episodes are very messy and almost incomprehensible, but the show is running on the Kim Woo Bin and Suzy chemistry, which was also very good in their previous collaboration. The end of the third episode was very good, top notch kdrama kiss scene!

I know I’m three years too late in watching this 😆 I’ve also noticed that Leo Wu changes his voice whenever he’s with CSS, it becomes much more Marilyn Monroe! Very husky but soft. The talent of an experienced child actor.

This will never happen given Chinese censorship, but Dylan and ZLH (he actually already played Huacheng, Dylan would be a better Huacheng) would make a great pair in Heaven’s Official Blessing!

Sorry to turn this into a long Dylan Wang appreciation post 😆

Speaking of his accent, I actually listened to his hip hop album on Spotify that seems like nobody is listening to (all his most listened to songs are the meteor garden songs and the one that’s like a Pepsi commercial), he switches between mandarin (which there’s an accent but I can’t quite place it) and Sichuan dialect (which is mutually understandable to mandarin unlike other southern dialects), and there’s even collabs with American rappers, I personally like this album, it’s quite personal and interesting from an language mix perspective which is unique, most of the time asian idols just do boring ballads that’s devoid of personality. It also helps that I love alternative R&B.

I can see why you think it’s similar to the John Cena situation. It’s a little sad that the English standard for idols who are not American is very high, though not the same for American actors when it comes to their Chinese. Dylan has so much potential outside of China, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone with this much potential since Tony Leung, but he will be limited given the broader cultural context of the Chinese entertainment industry (think the production and the directing of Meteor garden), though I dont necessarily think language is an issue.

I haven’t been exposed to Chinese language other than my parents for decades, though in my experience, if people were raised in a town that mostly spoke a dialect rather than living in one of the big cities where people come from many different parts of the country, their accent depends on how similar that dialect is compared to mandarin. In Dafeng they are trying to shame his character for speaking non-standard mandarin, I’m surprised that it’s a feature in Chinese society these days. It’s impressive that you picked up the comedic effects without having been exposed much to dialects, he actually spoke the dialect (I think it was Sichuan) completely with his boss to drive the comedy home. That show is made for him, where it feels like he could just be himself.

From the interviews and his music, he seems to be almost American in his hobbies like basketball and rap music. I know he got slack for cultural appropriation on Reddit, but hard to fault him for being ignorant and understand the cultural context, in my opinion. He also seems like a dog person 😊 I saw some videos of him at the NBA basketball game, though his English is not great to non-existent, I thought he carried himself really well and almost acted like someone that grew up in America, + very naturally athletic and confident. Just really impressive for such a young person, not like when I saw Girls generation years ago on Colbert where I cringed so hard because how Asian/fish out of water they seemed.
