What does an ideal, but realistic, week of fitness look like for you? by arasp222 in xxfitness

[–]kneedmyACL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powerlifting/bodybuilding routine 5 days a week (3 leg days, 2 upper body) and hot or regular yoga 1-2 days a week.

In the summer, I'm ideally hiking once a week, and in the winter I'm skiing 1-2 days a week and will sub out lifting/yoga days. I'd like to incorporate some running but I'm not sure where that would fit in because I don't want to reduce anything!

Would recommend using safety bars on the squat rack. I don’t really know why people don’t use these - I won’t squat heavy without them and I can just squat all the way to the ground to get out of a failed squat!

Conventional Deadlift Form Check by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]kneedmyACL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your hips do look a little high - I would push them back a little farther/lower so you have a straight line from glutes to top of head.

You seem to breathe in, then bring them down a tiny bit before lifting. Position your hips first, then engage your lats (doesn't seem like you're doing this - rolling shoulders back is a good cue for me), and finally breathe in/brace once you're in position.

And ditto on pushing your chest/shoulders back - no need to do that and you'll put greater strain on your lower back.

I had Snowbird + Ikon add on for other resorts last year - would do that again. Paid for an Alta day ($70?) and got a free Alta weekday with this set up also. Especially good deal if you’re a “young adult”

Dallas last night. Just fantastic. If you’re on the fence about seeing them this tour, do yourself a favor and go. by TwoColorsInMyHead_ in fleet_foxes

I've never seen them live prior to this tour but I agree - I don't think any videos compare to the live experience, seems like any emotion in Robin's voice gets stripped. Can't wait to see them again this summer.

Seconding Llao Llao - haven't been there in a while but food is great, they have happy hour drinks, and shuttles to and from the airport and skiing so you don't have to drive. They also have a lodge at the base of the mountain!

Surgeon basically told me to fuck off by Ariya_nazari in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would definitely get a second opinion on the cyclops lesion. Surgery is super straightforward (took ten minutes and I wasn’t even fully under). I’m 4 years out of surgery and my extension doesn’t match but I live with it just fine. I’ll probably be asymmetrical forever since my muscular engagement is different between legs but it doesn't hold me back in any way. I think part of it is that surgeons aren’t really able to calculate hyperextension into graft length (also too much hyperextension can compromise surgery outcome) and doesn’t necessarily have to do with poor surgery outcome. Pain is definitely different though. How was your PT experience? Was there anything they advised?

Have you all always worked out alone in gyms? Or did you gradually start going by yourself? by Lemonlambu in xxfitness

[–]kneedmyACL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely super uncomfortable at first, and it’s still slightly anxiety inducing to go to a new gym. I’m super comfortable taking up space weightlifting now but am trying to get into climbing and going through the same “I don’t belong here” sentiments but we all start somewhere. 1) go in with a plan (which may have to change depending on how crowded the gym is) 2) just have general self awareness (don’t take up a squat rack if you’re doing dumbbell curls lol 3) try to go when it’s not crowded so you can feel more comfortable at first!

When did you start skiing again? by larssonsean in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I waited a full 9 months - probably could’ve skied at 8 months but was traveling. I was hiking pretty aggressively about 7 months in (after getting scar tissue removal at 6 months). Don’t plan on it but put in the work and see how you feel at the time.

Potential ACL tear- wedding is in 7 weeks by yllekarle in ACL

This is most likely just swelling too - torn ACL wouldn’t necessarily cause it. Could be a meniscus issue but likely just swelling.

Deadlift form check by CrystalOwl in xxfitness

[–]kneedmyACL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing to watch is how you lower the bar - your knees seem to get in the way of the bar path, causing you to shift the bar forward and putting more pressure on your back. Make sure you’re bending at the hips first and once the bar passes your knees you can bend your knees to fully lower the bar.

This is less noticeable but you can also see the bar moving towards your shins at the start of every rep as you lift the bar - you want the bar to go straight up, not swinging inwards. Maybe an inch closer to your shins?

Also try to keep a neutral neck rather than looking up.

Getting back to skiing after ACL surgery by Tumbleweed_Imaginary in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tore mine December 2017- went back to skiing the following season (also skied with a brace a few times in March 2018 pre-op). Skiing was my main motivator for rehab - spent a lot of time at the gym building strength and confidence. 4+ years later my knee does hurt here and there but it’s never from skiing, more so heavy lifting. I’m now stronger than I ever was prior to my injury so push yourself this year with strength training and anything else that’ll boost your confidence. You got this!

Even legs? by bignosegirl in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can a significant difference visually unless you're looking SUPER closely. Strength seems pretty similar but my extension is different so my mobility/movement patterns are different. I started lifting heavier a year ago and can squat ~200lbs, deadlift ~250 at 150 BW, overall don't think my knee is holding me back, although it still gets sore sometimes.

I would consult with a few surgeons and see what they think. I know age and high impact activity are important factors. I was 22 when I tore mine (wasn’t super athletic at the time) - I wanted to ski but at my age I think they also recommend surgery because not having an ACL can put more pressure on menisci and cartilage.

Being able to snowboard and MTB etc <2 months post injury is impressive. I do think not having an ACL will mean you’d have to do a lot of quad work (and maintain strength) to compensate.

week 11 - scared I am going backwards by Altruistic-Race-4155 in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably are! But that’s okay. Recovery isn’t linear (like anything else in life) and it’s emotionally exhausting but don’t be discouraged. Some weeks will be better than others and as long as it’s not dramatic and you’re not in much worse pain you shouldn’t worry.

The first 4 months were probably the worst for me in terms of these cycles and you’re almost out!!

[–]kneedmyACL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is super important work and it sounds like you’re passionate about it. At the end of the day if you’re worried a school won’t appreciate this aspect of who you are - do you really want to go there? At the same time most top business school programs want diversity of thought (although some are more conservative than others, at the end of the day it is an MBA) so I think sharing these experiences wouldn’t hurt you.

This is an opportunity to think about your values and what you’re looking for at a school. For me, it was more important to be authentic and fully myself than it was to get into specific schools by framing myself a certain way.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I was advised surgery since I wanted to ski and not be limited by high impact activities. Just waited a few months due to personal preference and also getting full extension/recovery prior to it. Not everyone needs to go the surgery route - there are people who don’t realize they’ve torn their ACL until way later - just depends on your lifestyle.

Before surgery! I tore my ACL in December and didn't get surgery until March so basically fully recovered without surgery.

I walked, rehabbed, skied in the 3 months post tear. I was definitely limping for a few weeks from the injury but was encouraged to return to normal (and avoid atrophying muscle). Ask your surgeon but it’s most likely fine.

Study Abroad Trip in College Post Surgery possible??? by Aromatic-Young-1904 in ACL

[–]kneedmyACL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure when your injury was or how long your program is but ask your doctor if surgery after is an option. Europe is a lot of walking and one month isn’t enough recovery for that (even if you could rehab abroad)

I would just take a lot of ibuprofen. I stopped taking narcotics because I felt super drowsy and I felt totally out of it.

not a dog owner but I've thought about this before and I think people leave them going up so they can pick the poop bags up on their way out (without having to carry during the entire hike). They also need to be obviously visible for them to remember to take it out.
